Seven stops, two big waterfalls and a field of lava formations make up this small-group excursion for cruise passengers. The route follows Eyjafjörður, one of Iceland's longest fjords, to Goðafoss, which has a place in Iceland's history. At Lake Mývatn come the Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters, a formation found in only a few places on earth, among them Iceland, Hawaii, the Azores and Mars. Dimmuborgir is next: its lava formations stand on what used to be a lake bed, and the group does a short hike there. Hverir follows, with steam vents, bubbling mud pots, colored mineral patches and a smell of rotten eggs from the sulfur. Then comes a drive of about 40 minutes to Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe by volume, reached by a short hike from the car park that also passes Selfoss. The Grjótagjá cave holds hot blue water between the Eurasian and North American plates. A short stop at the Mývatn Nature Baths comes before the road back to Akureyri. Guides wait in the car park in front of the cruise terminal.

  1. MWMF+X4H, Laufásgata, Akureyri

The guides wait in a parking lot in front of the cruise terminal, wearing jackets with the company logo or holding signs with the passengers' names.

  2. Godafoss

Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods, is the first stop. It is less than 5 minutes on foot from the parking lot, with a small shop and a free toilet nearby.

  3. Skutustaoagigar

The pseudocraters are lava formations on Lake Mývatn, a place seen in only a few spots on earth. They sit next to the parking lot, with a small shop, a visitor center and free toilets close by.

  4. Dimmuborgir Lava Formations

Lava formations on ground that was once a lake until lava destroyed it, and visitors can now walk along the lake bottom. The group does a short hike here. Anyone who prefers can stay in the small restaurant and shop and look down from above. The toilet is free with a purchase in the restaurant.

  5. Grjotagja Caves

Hot blue geothermal water runs through a cave between two tectonic plates. Visitors can go inside to see the old geothermal baths, and can stand between the Eurasian and North American plates beside the big crack that runs across Iceland.

  6. Namafjall Hverir

Shallow groundwater next to the Krafla volcano system is heated here and rises to the surface. Expect steam vents, hot bubbling mud pots and many colored mineral patches on the ground, plus a sulfur smell like rotten eggs.

  7. Dettifoss Waterfall

Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe by volume, and its full force shows in early summer when snow melts from the surrounding mountains. A short hike from the car park leads to it and passes another waterfall, Selfoss.

  8. Earth Lagoon Myvatn (Jardbodin vid Myvatn)

A short stop before the road back to Akureyri. The Mývatn Nature Baths can be seen from here, and there is a free toilet and a shop for snacks.

  9. MWMF+X4H, Laufásgata, Akureyri
