Maui waterfall tours: Road to Hana drive or a hike?
20 listings, roughly 120 to 500 EUR, typically 120 to 250 EUR. The ten Road to Hana drives score 4.65 on 3,848 reviews; the eight hikes and rappels 4.90 on 2,749.
On Maui the drive and the hike are rated differently. The ten Road to Hana drives among our 20 Maui waterfall tours score 4.65 on 3,848 reviews. The eight hikes and rappels score 4.90 on 2,749. Part of the gap is the waterfall: on a drive it is one stop between a black sand beach, a banana bread stand and lunch, and on a hike it is the whole point. This page reads all 20 listings for what they cost (roughly 120 to 500 EUR, typically 120 to 250 EUR), how long the day is (0.8 to 9 hours), what the road itself involves and where the closures are. The other two places in the United States with their own tour pages are Kauai and the Columbia River Gorge, and the country page sets all three side by side.
Two things set Maui apart from the other places on this site, and neither is the waterfalls themselves. The road is the product on most listings: a 64.4-mile highway with, by Wikipedia's count, 46 one-lane bridges. And the fees sit mostly outside the ticket, in a national park entry and a state park reservation that you may pay yourself. The sections below put both next to the price, and say which of the stops on a typical itinerary are shut, which are uncertain and which the operators reserve the right to swap without telling you.

Road to Hana waterfall tours: what the drive actually is
The Hana Highway runs 64.4 miles (103.6 km) along Routes 36 and 360 from Kahului. It opened on 18 December 1926 and went on the National Register of Historic Places on 15 June 2001. Wikipedia puts it at about 620 curves and 59 bridges, 46 of them one lane, and about 2.5 hours from Kahului to Hana without stopping. The operators count differently, and one of them does it twice in the same listing.
The road is the product. The waterfall is a stop on it.
Keanae, one of twenty stops
The Stardust itinerary runs to twenty entries, among them Paia, Hoʻokipa, Twin Falls, Keanae Point, Upper Waikani Falls (the Three Bears), Hana Bay and Waiʻānapanapa. In a nine-hour day, each is minutes. That is the shape of a Road to Hana drive: a long list of short stops.
The photo shows the taro fields near Keanae from above. The same listing may swap its banana bread stop for Hana Farms when a closure or a queue gets in the way, and says so in the small print.
Drive it yourself or be driven
| Item | Your own car | A Road to Hana tour |
|---|---|---|
| Time behind the wheel | About 2.5 hours from Kahului to Hana without stops, then the same back | Listings run 5.5 to 9 hours and someone else drives |
| Start | Whenever you wake up | Pickups at 6:00, 6:30 and 6:40 am in the Stardust listing |
| Haleakalā National Park entry | Per-vehicle entry fee, valid for 3 days, card only | Not itemized in the listing we opened |
| Waiʻānapanapa State Park | Reservation required; the state page lists a small per-person fee for non-residents plus a per-vehicle fee, from a 2021 announcement | Visited whenever possible; the operator may swap in another beach |
| Lunch | Your own | Included in 4 of the 8 shared drives; a sandwich in the Stardust one, with no dietary alternatives |
| Tip | Not applicable | The Stardust listing recommends 15 to 20% for the driver |
| Group | Yours | Up to 14 in a Sprinter van |
Two seats on a shared drive cost roughly 250 to 500 EUR before the tip. Price a rental car, gas and the park's vehicle fee against that, because no rental price is in our data. The tour wins if you would rather not take 46 one-lane bridges while reading a map, and that is not an unreasonable thing to want. The car wins if you want to stay as long as you like at the stops you pick.
Read the small print of a drive listing for three phrases: that the itinerary is subject to change, that it depends on weather, road conditions, park closures and construction, and that the tour is not confirmed until the operator phones you. The Stardust listing has all three. They are not a reason to avoid it, because a road that long closes in pieces, but they are the reason to ask in writing which stops are open on your date and what the refund is if a beach is not.
Waiʻānapanapa, a beach that needs a reservation
Waiʻānapanapa State Park asks for a reservation, and the tours know it. The Stardust listing visits the black sand beach whenever possible and reserves the right to substitute another beach without notice. The operator's own July 2026 post, which we have not been able to check against an official page, lists the Hana lava tube, Red Sand Beach and the back road around the southeast among current closures.
The Pools of ʻOheʻo are the same kind of trap. The National Park Service says they are not accessible for entry because of a number of safety concerns and lets you look from the Kūloa Point Trail. Waimoku Falls, 400 feet tall, is in the same Kīpahulu district. Any listing that promises a swim in the Seven Sacred Pools is promising something the park does not allow.
What the price buys on Maui
The chart has one lone dot at the top left, in the 250 to 500 EUR band, a helicopter flight of under an hour over West Maui and Molokai with 25 reviews, and it has little to do with the rest. Everything else falls into two groups. The shared drives line up between 5.5 and 9 hours and 120 to 250 EUR, which means that price tracks the vehicle and the lunch more than the day. The private diamonds spread from the 120 to 250 EUR band to the 250 to 500 EUR band with no pattern at all: a two-hour private waterfall, rainforest and chocolate tour sits in the lower one, and a nine-hour private Road to Hana in the upper. Private tours here are priced per person like the shared ones: none of the 20 quotes one price for a whole group.
Hikes, rappels and the waterfall as the point
The best-reviewed listing on the page is a hike, not a drive: Hike Maui, 120 to 250 EUR for 5 hours, small group, with a naturalist guide, lunch and snacks, a minimum age of 6 and 1,495 reviews. It meets at the Kahului Park and Ride, does not collect from hotels and runs in all weather. It describes a pool beneath the falls and a jump from columnar basalt, which the listing calls safe and which we would treat as optional.
Rappel Maui (in the same band, 3 hours) is the other format. You must be at least 10 years old and weigh between 70 and 250 lb, and you are weighed at check-in with no refund if you miss the range. In flood the operator rappels 40- to 115-foot cliff faces away from the stream instead of the falls. Four more hikes are private, roughly 120 to 500 EUR, and one of them is an 8-hour jeep-and-hike day with lunch. A 4.90 is not the whole story: six of these eight hikes have fewer than 400 reviews.
The map explains the clock. Stardust collects at 6:00 am from Lahaina, 6:30 from Maalaea and 6:40 from Kahului, which is why the day is nine hours and starts before breakfast. Rappel Maui meets you at the Garden of Eden Arboretum on the Hana Highway, so you drive there yourself. Kīpahulu, with Waimoku Falls, lies beyond Hana, so a tour that turns around at Hana Bay never gets there. Ask for the turnaround point before you pay.

How to choose a Maui waterfall tour
Choose the hike if the waterfall is the reason you came. The four shared hikes and rappels cost 120 to 250 EUR for 3 to 6 hours and the group is small; you swim, you get wet, and the day is over in 3 to 6 hours. Choose the drive if you want to see the island and have no wish to drive it. Take a shared one unless you want the van to yourselves: the two private drives sit in the 250 to 500 EUR band per person against 120 to 250 EUR for a shared one, so privacy adds a good deal a head. We left out a month chart. None of the sources we checked dates the rains by month, and the road is open all year apart from works and closures, which change by the week.
Questions about Maui waterfall tours
Is the Road to Hana worth it?
Yes if you like to look at an island from a van window and stop often. No if you want a waterfall you can swim under. The drives score 4.65 on 3,848 reviews and the hikes 4.90. Most of the day is road: about 2.5 hours each way for the 64.4 miles without stops.
Should I take a tour or drive myself?
Count your people. Two seats on a shared drive cost roughly 250 to 500 EUR, and two seats on a private day cost more than 500 EUR, because both are priced per person. Driving yourself adds a rental, gas, the Haleakalā vehicle fee if you reach Kīpahulu, and a reservation at Waiʻānapanapa. The tour buys you out of the driving.
Can you swim at the Pools of ʻOheʻo?
No. The National Park Service says the pools are not accessible for entry because of safety concerns and asks you to look from the Kūloa Point Trail. Treat any listing that promises a swim there with caution, and ask where the swim is.
How much does a Maui waterfall tour cost?
The 20 listings cost roughly 120 to 500 EUR, typically 120 to 250 EUR. Shared Road to Hana drives are 120 to 250 EUR, hikes and rappels roughly 120 to 500 EUR. The cheapest listing is a two-hour private rainforest and chocolate tour, and the dearest is a helicopter flight of under an hour.
What happens if it rains?
The listings we opened keep going. Hike Maui says it operates in all weather. Rappel Maui goes rain or shine and swaps to cliff faces away from a flooding stream. Stardust says routing and times may change with closures, traffic or weather, and it is not confirmed until the operator phones you.
Prefer a trail that is open?
Kauai has the other Hawaii waterfall tours, with a closed trail, three flights and a state notice you can check. The page says what was open on 22 October 2026.
Data verified on . Listings and prices read 22 Oct 2026. Road facts from Wikipedia; park rules from the National Park Service and the state parks pages; operator statements from the listings.
