South Coast Iceland waterfall tours: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and the day around them

70 tours and 22,997 reviews: the 47 shared tours typically cost 120 to 250 EUR, a day takes about 10 hours, and a private tour typically lists above 1,000 EUR, mostly as one price for the whole booking.

South Coast waterfall tours from Reykjavík are the most reviewed day trip on this site: 70 tours and 22,997 reviews, 94% of all the reviews for Iceland. The 47 shared tours typically cost 120 to 250 EUR, and the one-day ones take about 10 hours. The private ones typically list at more than 1,000 EUR: 15 of the 20 quote one price for the whole booking, and the five cheapest, roughly 250 to 1,000 EUR, are priced per person. Only 13 of the 70 are sold as waterfall tours. The rest sell a glacier walk, a small group or a driver, and still stop at the same falls on the way. This page covers why Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss sit where they do, what the black beach at Reynisfjara asks of you, when the road and the paths work, and how to choose among four kinds of day. Prices are as listed, in EUR and rounded to bands. The pages linked in the table read the tours themselves.

One warning before the detail. The word waterfall in a tour title is a label, not a promise of time. The most reviewed listing here, with 6,676 reviews, visits five places in 10 hours and breaks for lunch at Reynisfjara, and two of the five are waterfalls. The country comparison, with the falls we do not sell, is on the Iceland page. If you already know the day you want, skip to the four-way table and the links under it. If you are not sure, the stop-by-stop table is the quickest way to see what ten hours buys.

How the South Coast waterfalls got where they are

The falls sit on a cliff that used to be a shoreline. The south face of Eyjafjallajökull was once coastline, and over thousands of years the sea has retreated about 5 km, leaving sheer cliffs that run parallel to the coast for hundreds of kilometers and mark the edge of the highlands. Skógafoss is the best known of the falls on that old coast. Seljalandsá, the river behind Seljalandsfoss, starts at the Eyjafjallajökull ice cap, which covered 66 km² in 2019 and was once more than 80.

The cliff you climb at Skógafoss used to be a coastline.
Skógafoss in long exposure, a 60 m curtain of water between two moss-covered cliffs, with a gravel flat in front

Skógafoss: 60 m high, 25 m wide, and a staircase

The drop is 60 m and the fall is 25 m wide. A staircase leads up the slope to a platform above the fall, and the trail to the Fimmvörðuháls pass starts on its eastern side, climbing between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers toward Þórsmörk. The spray is heavy enough that Wikipedia says a rainbow, single or double, is normally visible on sunny days, and one listing notes restrooms at the site. A legend says the first settler, Þrasi, buried a chest of treasure in a cave behind the fall. It is a legend, so treat it as one.

Seljalandsfoss and the path behind it

Seljalandsfoss is about 60 m high, a thin cascade, and the fall with a footpath behind it. South Iceland's tourist board asks visitors to respect the closure of the paths and warns that in winter, walking behind the fall is particularly dangerous because ice can fall in large chunks, especially at thaw. One operator suggests a raincoat if you plan to go behind. The height is one of the figures the listings cannot agree on: one gives 65 m, another 60.

A little further west, Gljúfrabúi is partly hidden by its canyon. Some listings add it, and the private Top Iceland Tours day includes it. Ask the operator if you want it.

Basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks on the black sand beach at Reynisfjara near Vík

What Reynisfjara asks of you

The black sand, the basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks are where the most reviewed listing both sightsees and breaks for lunch, at a café. It is also the stop with a death toll. Wikipedia, citing a 2023 study, counts at least five deaths and twelve serious rescues between 2007 and 2024 from sneaker waves, which can surge far up the beach without warning, and a sixth death in August 2025 at the Hálsanefshellir sea cave. Our rule is plain: stay well back from the waterline, never turn your back to the sea, and keep to your guide's line even when other groups ignore theirs.

Sólheimajökull, Vík and how far the day stretches

Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, melting back by about 60 m a year, according to Wikipedia. The standard day only walks toward it: the most reviewed listing follows the valley the glacier carved, and another goes up to the small lake formed by the retreating ice. Walking on the ice is a different product, sold on the glacier and waterfall page.

Vík is the village with the red church, a short photo stop in the listing we read. Beyond it the road continues to Jökulsárlón. Three of the most reviewed listings add the glacier lagoon and run 14 hours, at roughly 120 to 500 EUR, against 10 hours for the standard day. The Gray Line version has the lowest rating of the three, 4.4 on 646 reviews.

The listing gives a return time but no departure time and no minutes per stop. With two to two and a half hours each way to Skógafoss, four to five of the ten hours are on the road, which leaves five to six for five stops and lunch. Call it 45 minutes to an hour a stop: our arithmetic, not a promise. The order also varies. The Reykjavik Excursions listing goes Skógafoss, Vík, Reynisfjara, Sólheimajökull, then Seljalandsfoss.

Which South Coast waterfall tour to choose

Four kinds of South Coast day compared, from the 70 tours read on 22 October 2026; prices are approximate bands
Kind of day Tours Price band Typical length What sets it apart
Classic waterfall tours13120 to 250 EUR10 hoursThe cheapest, and the only format sold as a waterfall tour; 77% include pickup. Band of the 12 shared tours; one private listing above 1,000 EUR is left out
Small-group tours20120 to 250 EUR10 hoursEvery listing is a small group, and the most reviewed one caps a booking at 15
Glacier and waterfall tours17500 to 1,000 EUR14 hours41% include a glacier hike and 35% are multi-day, so the median hides two products
Private tours20More than 1,000 EUR10 hoursAll private; 15 of the 20 price the whole booking, and the five cheapest (roughly 250 to 1,000 EUR) are per person

Start with classic waterfall tours, the baseline in the 120 to 250 EUR band. Move to small-group tours if you want fewer people for a small extra. Go to glacier and waterfall tours for the ice, and to private tours only when the schedule is the problem.

What moves the price

Dot chart of median South Coast tour price by format: classic and small group in the 120 to 250 EUR band, glacier 500 to 1,000, private above 1,000
Median price by format, with the middle half of the listings as the bar. Shared tours are per person; 15 of the 20 private tours quote one price for the booking. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The two cheap formats sit almost on top of each other. The glacier bar runs from roughly 250 to 1,000 EUR because it holds both a day with a hike and a two-day trip. Private is a different scale altogether: the middle half runs from roughly 500 to more than 1,000 EUR, and one private 11-hour day lists above 1,000 EUR. Fifteen of the 20 private tours quote one price for the whole booking, with caps from 5 to 15 travelers, and the other five are per person, so the private bar mixes two units. Every other price on this page is per person. Divide before you compare.

The coast on a map

The squares are where tours start. The dots are the waterfalls, and the triangles are the landmarks the listings add: Sólheimajökull, Reynisfjara and, at the far right, Jökulsárlón.

Map of the South Coast from Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón with the waterfalls, Reynisfjara and Sólheimajökull marked
Squares are where most tours start, dots are the waterfalls the listings visit, triangles are landmarks. Scale bar: 50 km. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial; map data Natural Earth, place positions © OpenStreetMap contributors

Reykjavík is about 150 km from Skógafoss. Seljalandsfoss is the dot furthest west, roughly 30 km before Skógar, and Reynisfjara and Vík are about as far east as the standard day goes. Jökulsárlón is far enough past them that the listings reaching it run 14 hours, so the choice between 10 hours and 14 is a choice about one place.

When the coast works

Tours run through the year, and one operator states that its tour operates in all weather conditions, so dress for it. What changes is the ground. The days are short in winter, and the Sólheimajökull warnings apply in summer too. Reynisfjara has no off season, because the waves do not follow the calendar.

Questions about South Coast waterfall tours

Is the South Coast tour worth it in winter?

Tours run all year and the falls are open, but the days are short and the ground is icy. Operators may change the route for safety, and the most reviewed listing says so. The listings we opened allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, so a winter booking carries little risk.

Can you walk behind Seljalandsfoss?

In the warm months, yes: a footpath runs behind the fall, and one operator advises a raincoat. In winter the path is closed when ice makes it dangerous. South Iceland's tourist board points to safetravel.is for the current status.

Is Reynisfjara dangerous?

Yes. Sneaker waves can reach far up the beach without warning, and Wikipedia counts five deaths and at least twelve serious rescues between 2007 and 2024, with a sixth death in August 2025. Stay well back from the water, never turn your back to the sea, and follow the safety zones.

Do the tours reach Jökulsárlón?

The standard 10-hour day does not. Three of the most reviewed listings add the glacier lagoon, run 14 hours and cost roughly 120 to 500 EUR. If the lagoon is the reason you are booking, choose one of those.

Do South Coast tours include lunch?

Rarely: only 3% of the 70 include a meal. The most reviewed listing stops for lunch at a café at Reynisfjara and says food is not included. Bring something, or budget for it.

Shared or private?

Shared is the sensible default, typically 120 to 250 EUR a person, with 47 listings to choose from. Private typically lists above 1,000 EUR. Fifteen of the 20 price the whole booking, so they beat the shared fare per head only from about seven travelers, and the five priced per person (roughly 250 to 1,000 EUR) cost three to five times as much as a bus day. It suits a fixed schedule or a photographer who wants to choose the stops, not a tight budget.

Comparing the whole country?

The Iceland page sets the South Coast against the north and the falls we do not sell.
