Ban Gioc Waterfall Tours: From Hanoi or From Cao Bang
20 tours from 13 operators: roughly 30 to 120 EUR for a day from Cao Bang city, from under 120 to more than 250 EUR for two or three days from Hanoi.
A Ban Gioc waterfall tour costs under 60 EUR or more than 250 EUR depending on where it starts and how many nights it takes. The falls are about 340 km from Hanoi, so the nine listings that leave the capital run two or three days at typically 120 to 250 EUR. The ten that leave Cao Bang city, already most of the way there, run from under 60 EUR for one long day to the 120 to 250 EUR band for two. This page reads the Thác Bản Giốc tours by start city, hour by hour for the two-day Hanoi trip most people choose, and says plainly what is not for sale: a visit to the Chinese side of the falls. Entrance fees, the boat near the falls and the guide are where listings differ most, so the not-included lines matter more here than the headline price.
Looking for a different kind of day? The Da Lat page reads the other Vietnam waterfall trip, typically 30 to 60 EUR for about six hours, and the Vietnam page sets the two side by side. Below, the Ban Gioc tours are read by where they start, because that decides the price, the length and what the price already includes. The listing count is 20, as on every sibling page, but the evidence is thinner: 1,907 reviews in all, spread over 13 operators.

Ban Gioc waterfall tour: what the 20 listings sell
The 20 listings sort into four groups. Nine leave from Hanoi and run two or three days. Five are one-day tours from Cao Bang city, eight to twelve hours long. Five are two-day loops around Cao Bang, and one is a five-day motorbike trip from Ha Giang. One is private, the five-day motorbike loop from Ha Giang; another listing is sold as a daily, open or private tour. Lunch is included in all 20 and hotel pickup in 95%, and 13 operators share the market.
The chart is wide because the tours are different lengths, not because some operators overcharge. The cheapest dot, under 60 EUR, is an eight-hour day from Cao Bang city; the dearest shared dot, more than 250 EUR, is three days from Hanoi. Inside each start city the spread follows the number of nights.
| Start | Listings | Price | Typical band | Length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hanoi | 9 | Under 120 to more than 250 EUR | 120 to 250 EUR | 2 or 3 days |
| Cao Bang city, one day | 5 | 30 to 120 EUR | 60 to 120 EUR | 8 to 12 hours |
| Cao Bang city, two days | 5 | 120 to 250 EUR | 120 to 250 EUR | 2 days |
| Ha Giang | 1 | 250 to 500 EUR | 250 to 500 EUR | 5 days |
One Hanoi listing, titled 1, 2, 3 days, is filed at eight hours, but its inclusions list a sleeper bus between Hanoi and Cao Bang each way. It is not a day trip from the capital, whatever the length field says.
Two days from Hanoi, hour by hour
The standard two-day tour from the Old Quarter is the template for the Hanoi listings, so it is worth reading by the clock. The times come from the listing. What the table does not show is the road, which fills most of the first and last days.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1, 6:00 to 6:30 | Hotel pickup in the Old Quarter |
| Day 1, 7:15 | Departure for Ban Gioc |
| Day 1, 12:45 to 13:00 | Lunch at a local restaurant |
| Day 1, afternoon | Ban Gioc Falls, with a boat near the falls (self-paid), then Nguom Ngao cave |
| Day 1, 16:30 and 18:30 | Hotel check-in near the falls, then dinner |
| Day 2, 8:00 | Ban Gioc Pagoda for a view over the falls, then Angel Eye Mountain |
| Day 2, 12:00 | Lunch in Quảng Uyên district |
| Day 2, 18:30 | Back in Hanoi |
Hanoi to Ban Gioc is most of a day of road each way and an afternoon at the falls.
The price includes all entrance fees, three meals, one night in a two-star local hotel, an English and Vietnamese guide and the bus or van. Tips, drinks and travel insurance are not included. At 120 to 250 EUR that is a fair bundle, provided you want the road.
Truc Lam Pagoda
The falls from the pagoda
Two kinds of listing send you to Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda for a view from above: the 12-hour Cao Bang day at 10:30, and the two-day Hanoi tour on its second morning. The photo shows that kind of view, the falls across green fields with boats on the river at their foot.
It is a short stop, but it changes what you see. From the water you meet the near part of the falls; from the pagoda you see how far they spread.
The falls, the border and the question of China
Ban Gioc sits on the line between Vietnam and China, so the first thing people ask is whether you can cross. We found no listing that sells it. Vietnam and China formally opened the site to joint tourism on 15 October 2024, after a one-year pilot that counted more than 16,000 visitors, by the Cao Bang provincial report. The report we read does not say who may cross, where, or with what papers. Plan on seeing China from the Vietnamese side, and treat any offer to cross as unconfirmed until the operator shows you the permit and the rules in writing.

Distances from Hanoi and Cao Bang
Travel guides put Ban Gioc about 340 km from Hanoi by road; Wikipedia gives about 272 km. By the accounts we read, Cao Bang city sits roughly 85 km short of the falls, and the road from Hanoi to Cao Bang takes six to ten hours depending on the vehicle. That is why the Cao Bang tours cost less: they begin after the long part. Two listings add Ba Be Lake, which the map puts south-west of Cao Bang, and the five-day Ha Giang tour is a motorbike loop that ends here rather than a tour of the falls.
Trà Lĩnh district
Angel Eye Mountain, and the night in Cao Bang
Most listings add Angel Eye Mountain (Núi Mắt Thần), a peak in Trà Lĩnh district with a round hole through the top, more than 50 m across by one listing's description. It is why the longest Cao Bang day tours run twelve hours. One two-day listing turns it into a camping night, and the photo shows the peak with tents beside a lake.
On the 12-hour day the waterfall gets about an hour and a half, from 11:00 to 12:30. The rest belongs to the cave, a knife-forging village and this mountain at sunset.
What the day tour from Cao Bang leaves out
Five one-day tours leave from Cao Bang city, at roughly 30 to 120 EUR. They are the cheapest way to see the falls, and they skip the 340 km because you cover that part yourself. Read the motorbike listing closely: its price covers entrance fees, lunch and a motorbike with petrol. A local guide is listed as included, but an English-speaking guide, a driver and a car each cost extra, priced separately in the listing's own text. Without the driver the motorbike is yours to ride.
Check the vehicle on every listing. In our reading at least five are by motorbike, and at least three say car or limousine in the title or description.
How to choose
Start with the days you have. Two days from Hanoi is the only way to reach the falls without arranging your own transport to Cao Bang, and the standard Hanoi listing shows what you get: meals, a hotel, entrance. If you are already in Cao Bang, the day tour at roughly 30 to 120 EUR is the better value, as long as you read the vehicle and guide lines. For more than the waterfall, the three-day listings, the dearest of the set, add slower days. And if the waterfall alone is your goal, ask yourself honestly whether it carries two days.
People book a Cao Bang day tour while still in Hanoi. They assume the boat near the falls is included, when one listing marks it self-paid. And they read the name Detian in a stop list as a promise to visit the Chinese side.
When the falls are widest
Guides disagree on the season. Some put the rains at June to September, when the falls turn into one wide sheet of white water, with the heaviest flow and muddier water in September and October; others say the water is clearest from December to March, when there is much less of it. We lean towards September and October, when the falls are fullest. That is an editorial judgement, not a measurement.

Questions about Ban Gioc waterfall tours
How do you get from Hanoi to Ban Gioc?
Ban Gioc is about 340 km north of Hanoi by road, as travel guides count it (Wikipedia gives about 272 km). A two-day tour collects you from the Old Quarter around 6:00 to 6:30, has you at lunch at 12:45 and brings you back around 18:30 on day two. On your own, the accounts we read put the road to Cao Bang city at six to ten hours depending on the vehicle, then roughly 85 km to the falls.
Is Ban Gioc worth two days?
Count what else the two days buy: Nguom Ngao cave, a pagoda with a view over the falls, Angel Eye Mountain, a hotel night and all meals. If the waterfall is your only goal, the one-day Cao Bang tours typically cost 60 to 120 EUR, but they start in Cao Bang city, not Hanoi.
Can you cross to China at Ban Gioc?
We found no listing that sells it. Vietnam and China formally opened the site to joint tourism in October 2024 after a one-year pilot, but the report says nothing about who may cross or with what papers. Plan to see China from the Vietnamese side and ask for permits in writing before you pay for anything else.
What does a Ban Gioc tour include?
On the standard two-day Hanoi tour: all entrance fees, three meals, one hotel night, a guide and the bus or van. Tips, drinks and insurance are extra, and the boat near the falls is self-paid. Cheaper day tours differ, so read the included and not-included lines.
Prefer a day trip?
Da Lat is the other Vietnam waterfall trip: 20 listings, typically 30 to 60 EUR, about six hours.
