East Java Waterfall Tours: Tumpak Sewu and Madakaripura Under the Volcanoes

35 tours, from day trips in the 30 to 60 EUR band to four-day loops above 250 EUR. Two waterfalls, three volcanoes, and a price that depends on which one you book.

East Java sells two very different things under one name. A day trip to Tumpak Sewu typically costs 30 to 60 EUR. A three-day loop through Bromo, Ijen and the same waterfall typically costs 120 to 250 EUR. The median across all 35 East Java waterfall tours on this site falls between the two, a number that describes neither. Thirty of the 35 are private and every one lists pickup, so the real choice is not between operators but between two ways of spending the days. This page is about the place: Tumpak Sewu, the 120 m curtain of falls in Lumajang that sits below Mount Semeru, Madakaripura, the waterfall at the end of a gorge near Bromo, the road times between them, and what an active volcano changes about a visit. For how East Java compares with Bali and Lombok, see the Indonesia page.

Pick by what you want from the day. Tumpak Sewu Day Trips reads the 13 single-day listings, from a shared tour in the 30 to 60 EUR band to a 20-hour sunrise and waterfall marathon, and says what the descent asks of your knees. Bromo, Ijen & Tumpak Sewu Multi-Day Tours reads the 20 loops, with the price by length and what happens when Ijen closes. Two more tours sit directly on this page, and both pair Bromo with Madakaripura. The sections below cover the two waterfalls, the road times between them and the volcano rules, so you can choose before you open a single listing. Nothing here ranks operators. A day at Tumpak Sewu and a night at Ijen are different purchases, and the two pages above price each one on its own terms. With 23 of them and a review base this lopsided, the useful comparison is between formats.

Tumpak Sewu, the waterfall under Semeru

Tumpak Sewu is in Sidomulyo village, Pronojiwo district, Lumajang, roughly 70 km from Malang. Its other name, Coban Sewu, means something like a thousand waterfalls, and the name fits: the river drops into a horseshoe gorge and falls over the rim in dozens of strands instead of one sheet. The total drop is about 120 m, according to the Wikipedia entry for the falls. The water is fed by the Glidik river, which drains Semeru, the highest mountain on Java.

That last fact is the thing to remember about the place. The same volcano that fills the river is active, and it decides what the authorities allow on a given week.

Mount Semeru rising above forest and the curtain of Tumpak Sewu waterfall in East Java

A fall that drains a volcano

The view that sells the day is the one from the top: the strands in front, Semeru's cone behind them, forest in between. Two things follow from that geography. The falls run on rain and on runoff from the mountain, so the dry months are the safer ones for the walk down. And the volcano is active, so access is a matter for the geological agency as well as for the weather.

Both points come back below. The listings themselves are blunt about them in their terms.

Madakaripura, the waterfall in the gorge

Madakaripura is in Probolinggo, on the Bromo side of the province, and it is a different kind of visit. You walk about 1.2 km, with 15 to 20 minutes of it in and beside a stream, into a gorge whose walls close overhead. The fall comes down inside the cut and you get wet from the spray. Travel blogs put its height at about 200 m; none of them gives a measurement we could trace, so read the number as an estimate.

The rules matter more than the height. Guides report that a local guide is compulsory, at about IDR 100,000 per group of up to 10 (one blog, November 2025; we found no official notice). The same guide lists a foreigner's ticket at IDR 53,500 on top of parking, a helmet and a motorbike taxi for the last stretch. Tours that include the waterfall fold some or all of that into the price. One multi-day listing we opened lists the entrance fee as not included.

Tumpak Sewu is a view you walk down into. Madakaripura is a room you walk into.
Visitors in rain ponchos walking into the mossy Madakaripura gorge in East Java, Indonesia

Inside the gorge

The photo shows the arrangement: sheer mossy walls, a thin fall at the far end, dark water at the foot and a group in ponchos for scale. In the listings Madakaripura follows Bromo. On the 18-hour day, in the 60 to 120 EUR band, it comes after the sunrise and the crater, with the group at the waterfall from 10:30 to 14:00, lunch included in that window and paid by you.

Where the tours start and how long the roads take

Almost every listing starts in Malang or Surabaya, and a few start in Bali. The map shows why the two falls are different trips. Tumpak Sewu lies south of Malang, Madakaripura sits north of it beside Bromo, and the Ijen crater is far to the east, near the ferry to Bali. The times below are the ones the tour itineraries give, which is the only honest source for roads that traffic and volcano closures keep changing.

Two formats, one price chart

Chart of East Java tour prices by format: Tumpak Sewu day trips and Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu multi-day tours
Dot is the median, bar the middle half of the listings. Day trips cluster in the 30 to 60 EUR band, multi-day loops in the 120 to 250 EUR band. Prices are per person, private tours included. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The chart is the reason this page has no single price. The 13 day trips run roughly 30 to 250 EUR and the 20 multi-day tours roughly 120 to 500 EUR, and the two bars barely touch. The cheapest tour on the site is a nine-hour shared day to Tumpak Sewu, in the 30 to 60 EUR band. The dearest is a four-day private loop above 250 EUR. Do not read private as dearer: 30 of the 35 listings are private and they are priced per person, like the shared seats. Only 2 listings quote one price for the whole group, the Goa Tetes day via Malang, in the 60 to 120 EUR band, and the two-day Tumpak Sewu and Bromo trip, in the 250 to 500 EUR band.

Pickup is listed on all 35 tours. Lunch is included on only 4 of them. The review base is lopsided: of 1,468 reviews, 310 sit on one listing and the five most-reviewed listings hold half of the total.

The two tours that sit on this page

Two listings are filed directly under East Java, and both put Bromo first. The shorter one, in the 60 to 120 EUR band, starts at midnight in Surabaya or Malang, reaches the Bromo area for the sunrise, climbs the volcano and then drives to Madakaripura, 12 hours in all. The longer one, in the same band, has the same shape stretched to 18 hours, with a stated pickup at 23:00 and a return between 14:00 and 17:00 in the itinerary, so up to 18 hours in all, tickets to both sites, a motorbike taxi to the falls and a shared 4WD jeep with a maximum of six per car.

They are a compromise, not a bargain. The waterfall is the afternoon of a day whose subject is the sunrise.

Living under an active volcano

Semeru is one of Indonesia's active volcanoes and Tumpak Sewu is on its flank. We would not skip the place for that, but we would read the notices. The geological agency publishes alert levels through MAGMA Indonesia, and the operators write their position into the listings: the Tumpak Sewu day trips page reads the refund clause in full.

Three events that set the terms

Reported by Indonesian news agencies in December 2021, December 2025 and 2026. Check MAGMA Indonesia for the current alert level before you travel.

The growth

  1. December 2021

    Semeru erupts

A major eruption on 4 December struck the districts of Pronojiwo and Candipuro in Lumajang, the area that contains Tumpak Sewu. Two days later the reported toll was 34 dead and 17 missing.

Today

  1. December 2025

    Alert level III

The volcano was at alert level III with daily explosions, an exclusion zone of 5 km around the crater and 13 km along the south-east sector. We found no report of Tumpak Sewu itself being closed, but our search covered only that month.

  2. 2026

    Ijen closes for fires

The crater stayed closed for more than three weeks after fires and reopened with tickets sold only online. A listing that includes Ijen sells a day the authorities can cancel.

In practice: book a listing with free cancellation, keep the morning flexible and message the operator the day before. Rain is the more common way to lose the descent: guides describe flash-flood risk in the wet season.

When to go to East Java's waterfalls

Both falls follow the same logic: the dry months are the safe ones. Guides give May to October for Tumpak Sewu and May to September for Madakaripura, and neither fall has an official calendar to quote. Outside those months the listings still run. You are simply more likely to be told, on the morning, that the descent is off.

Do you need a tour?

Neither fall needs one in the way a boat cave does, with two catches. Madakaripura reportedly makes you take a local guide, and Tumpak Sewu is 70 km of rural road from Malang. If you do not drive in Indonesia and you are not sleeping near the falls, a tour is mostly a car with a driver who knows which ticket window is which. The cost comparison for Tumpak Sewu, driver and tickets against a listing, is on the day-trip page.

Questions about East Java waterfall tours

Is Tumpak Sewu worth the trip from Malang?

If the fall is your reason, yes, but know what you buy. The day-trip itinerary puts 2 to 2.5 hours of road each way around a visit that lasts a few hours. A day-trip price in the 30 to 60 EUR band buys the car, the driver, the tickets and a guide. If you have one day and want a volcano too, the Bromo sunrise listings are the other choice.

Can you swim at Tumpak Sewu?

Do not plan on it. No listing we read sells a swim under the main fall, and the base is a rocky river bed. Some day trips add a cave and a smaller fall on the same walk, and what is allowed there can change, so ask your guide on the day.

Is it safe to visit near Semeru?

Visits go ahead when the authorities declare the sites safe, and operators say so in their terms. The volcano is active, a major eruption hit Lumajang in December 2021, and the level was III in December 2025. Check MAGMA Indonesia before you go and book a refundable listing.

Can I visit Tumpak Sewu without a tour?

Yes, by public bus, or by car or motorbike with a driver. One guide updated in late 2025 lists IDR 50,000 for the top viewpoint, 50,000 for the gorge and 20,000 for Goa Tetes. Another says 100,000 and an older one 10,000. No official tariff turned up, so carry cash. Madakaripura is different: guides report that a local guide is compulsory, though we found no official notice.

Can I see Bromo and a waterfall in one day?

Yes. Two listings on this page do it with Madakaripura, for 18 hours and 12, both in the 60 to 120 EUR band and both starting around midnight. A Bromo and Tumpak Sewu day also exists on the day-trip page, for 17 hours and for 20, in the 120 to 250 EUR band. They are long days.

Want the volcano and the waterfall together?

The multi-day page reads 20 loops through Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu, with the price by length and the question of what Ijen can cancel.
