Gozalandia and Charco Azul Waterfall Tours from San Juan
20 tours, from under 60 to more than 500 EUR. Only 3 go to Gozalandia; 7 swim the Charco Azul canyon and hold 70% of the reviews.
The title of this page is the first thing to question. Gozalandia, the waterfall in San Sebastián, is the destination of only 3 of the 20 tours here. Seven go to the Charco Azul canyon and the Arenales caves near Vega Baja, and those seven carry 5,527 of the 7,852 reviews, about 70%. The rest are a zipline and rappel day, a cave-and-river day around Arecibo, and hikes to falls near Bayamón and in the central mountains. The typical price is 60 to 120 EUR for 6 hours, but the same canyon is sold at four different prices, from the low end of that band into the 120 to 250 EUR band. This page sorts the listings by what they visit, so that you choose the day and not the name. We read every itinerary, counted the stops and checked who runs each day, because on this island the waterfall in the title is often the least of what you pay for. Three of the 20 listings, for example, are private, and one of them costs more than 500 EUR.
One note on names. Puerto Rican guides list two places called Charco Azul. The listings on this page go to a canyon in the Arenales caves area near Vega Baja, on the north coast. The other, a swimming pool near Patillas on the south-east coast, is not on any tour here. Below you will find a price chart, a map of the distances from San Juan, a table of the seven canyon listings and five checks to run before you book. For the rainforest in the east, see the El Yunque page; for the whole island, start at waterfalls in Puerto Rico.

Gozalandia, the waterfall in the name
Gozalandia, in San Sebastián, is a pair of falls on private land. The larger is about 60 ft, according to Matador Network, with a cave behind it. Third-party guides give opening hours of 9:00 to 18:00 and a small parking charge, and describe no separate ticket. That is secondhand, and a private site can change its rules, so confirm before you drive. The number that matters is distance: 97 km in a straight line from the San Juan meeting points, and the private listing in the 120 to 250 EUR band allows about 2 hours each way. Its day is 8 hours on paper: 2 hours out, 3 at the falls with a lunch stop, a 2-hour beach stop at Crash Boat in Aguadilla and 2 back. That adds up to nine. The cheapest of the three, in the 60 to 120 EUR band, adds a coffee-factory stop on the way. The dearest, at more than 500 EUR, pairs Gozalandia with the Poza del Obispo on the Arecibo coast and allows up to 6 travelers on one price for the whole group; divided by six, it lands in the 120 to 250 EUR band for each traveler.
Gozalandia is a waterfall at the end of a two-hour road. Price the road, not the water.
Cueva Ventana, the long day
The window cave near Arecibo anchors the longest listing on the page: 9 hours, 120 to 250 EUR, 739 reviews at 4.9. It stacks three stops. First comes Cueva Ventana, entered with helmets and head lamps, with the park entry included. Then a 15-minute walk through the Río Tanamá canyon, in the water, to a waterfall where you can swim and, if you choose, jump. Last is Cueva del Indio and its Taíno petroglyphs. Lunch is not included, the listing asks for a high level of fitness and basic swimming skills, and it says that in dangerous weather the river stop becomes a natural spring.
Charco Azul is the product most people buy
The seven Charco Azul listings take the canyon and the Arenales caves in the north, an hour or so from San Juan according to the listings, and they are where the reviews are. The biggest is the 5-hour day in the 60 to 120 EUR band with 2,590 reviews at 5.0, which on its own is 33% of everything reviewed on this page. It promises cave swimming, waterfalls, Taíno petroglyphs and optional cliff jumps of 8 to 27 feet, with life vests, water, a guide and an air-conditioned vehicle included. A 7-hour Arenales day costs about the same; three more listings, in the same band, are the market price for the standard route. At the edges, the version with cave tubing is the cheapest and the version with professional photos sits a band higher, at 120 to 250 EUR. Same canyon, different extras.
| Listing | Price band | Length | Reviews | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cave, Waterfall and River Adventure, from San Juan | 60 to 120 EUR | 5 hours | 2,590 | The reference day: vests, water, guide, vehicle |
| Arenales River Caving, Waterfall and Forest Spring | 60 to 120 EUR | 7 hours | 1,776 | The longest standard day, with a forest spring added |
| Cave Adventure: Canyon and Waterfall | 60 to 120 EUR | 7 hours | 428 | Led by a certified local interpreter, per the listing |
| Charco Azul Caves, Canyon and Waterfall | 60 to 120 EUR | 5.5 hours | 256 | Arenales caves plus the canyon |
| Charco Azul, Caves, Waterfalls, Beach, Drinks | 60 to 120 EUR | 5.5 hours | 198 | Adds a beach stop and a drink for adults |
| Rainforest Cave Tubing and Waterfalls | 60 to 120 EUR | 5 hours | 274 | Cave tubing; the cheapest of the seven |
| Charco Azul with Pro Photos | 120 to 250 EUR | 5 hours | 5 | Professional photos; only 5 reviews so far |
Where the day starts
Almost everything leaves from San Juan, from points that differ by operator. The reference Charco Azul day meets in front of a juice bar on Ashford Avenue. The zipline day gives three points, in Caguas, on Las Américas Avenue and on Ashford, at 9 or 9:30. The private Gozalandia day leaves at 8:00 from the T-Mobile District. Hotel pickup is offered by 50% of the listings, and one limits it to hotels in a drop-down menu. Read the meeting point before you read the price: a day that starts in Caguas is not the same day for someone sleeping in Condado.
Zipline, rappelling and the other hikes
One listing is not a waterfall tour in the usual sense: a full day near the Carite State Forest, which the listing puts 45 minutes from San Juan, with three ziplines and an 80 ft rappel down the El Salto waterfall, a home-cooked meal of rice, beans and chicken, and equipment included. It sits in the 120 to 250 EUR band, has 965 reviews at 5.0, sets a minimum age of 12 and a weight limit of 220 pounds, and takes small groups of up to 12. The other eight listings are hikes, typically 60 to 120 EUR and 5.5 hours. A 6-hour hike near San Juan costs under 60 EUR and promises a 180 ft fall, and another sells a 150 ft one; both heights are the operators' own figures. At the top end, a central-mountains day for 8 hours and a private beach-and-rainforest day each cost 250 to 500 EUR. They have 5 and 7 reviews between them.
How far from San Juan?
Straight-line distances from the San Juan meeting points are 36 km to the Charco Azul canyon, 67 km to Cueva Ventana and 97 km to Gozalandia. The canyon and Gozalandia are 63 km apart, so no listing combines them. Driving times in the listings are consistent with that: about an hour to the canyon, 45 minutes to Carite, two hours to Gozalandia. If your hotel is in the west, near Aguadilla, the private Gozalandia day's beach stop at Crash Boat will feel like a detour; from San Juan it is a detour too, because Aguadilla lies farther west than San Sebastián, which is how a product sold as 8 hours lists nine hours of stops.
What the price is paying for
The bar runs from roughly 60 to 250 EUR, with the median in the 60 to 120 EUR band. Four things move a listing along it. Road time comes first: the Gozalandia days sit at the top because they are 97 km from the city. Privacy is second, which is how three listings reach the 120 to 250, 250 to 500 and above 500 EUR bands. Extras are third: photos, a beach stop, drinks, cave tubing. Equipment is fourth, and it explains why a zipline-and-rappel day sits in the 120 to 250 EUR band. The 16 operators are not evenly spread. One operator's single Charco Azul listing holds a third of the page's reviews, and another operator sells three of the hikes.
| If you want | Book | Typical price band | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| To swim through caves | A Charco Azul canyon day | 60 to 120 EUR, 5 to 7 hours | Moderate fitness; one listing wants basic swimming skills |
| One big waterfall | A Gozalandia day | 60 to 250 EUR, 7 to 8 hours | About 2 hours of road each way |
| Adrenaline | The Carite zipline and rappel | 120 to 250 EUR | Minimum age 12, weight limit 220 pounds |
| The most variety | Cueva Ventana, river and coast | 120 to 250 EUR, 9 hours | High fitness; lunch not included |
| A short, cheap hike | A waterfall hike near San Juan | 30 to 120 EUR, 5 to 6 hours | Heights in titles are the operators' claims |
Five checks before you book
First, find the waterfall in the itinerary, not in the title. Second, add up the hours: a day that lists 9 hours of stops inside an 8-hour product has cut something. Third, read the unit of a private price. Only the Gozalandia listing above 500 EUR quotes one price for the whole group; the other private days are priced per person. Fourth, if you arrive by cruise ship, the Carite listing asks for the ship's name and your boarding times at booking, and refunds nothing if you miss the ship. Fifth, look for the weather clause, which on one listing swaps the river for a spring.
Same canyon, four prices, across two bands. Compare what is in the van before you compare what is on the invoice.
Questions about Gozalandia and Charco Azul tours
Can you visit Gozalandia without a tour?
Third-party guides describe it as a private site with a small parking charge and no separate ticket, which suggests yes if you have a car and confirm the hours. A tour mostly buys the two hours of road each way from San Juan, plus a guide. Because it is private land, the owner's rules apply and can change.
Which Charco Azul do the tours visit?
The one in the north. The listings put the canyon at an address in Vega Baja and the caves in the Arenales system. The Charco Azul dot on the map is the south-east pool near Patillas, which no listing here visits.
Do I need to swim?
For the Cueva Ventana day the listing asks for basic swimming skills, and the other cave days hand out life vests. Cliff jumps of 8 to 27 feet are optional. None of the listings we read requires them.
How long is the drive from San Juan?
About an hour to the Charco Azul canyon, 45 minutes to the Carite forest and about 2 hours each way to Gozalandia, according to the listings. The straight-line distances are 36, 67 and 97 km to the canyon, Cueva Ventana and Gozalandia.
Are these tours suitable for children?
It depends on the day. The zipline and rappel day sets a minimum age of 12 and a weight limit of 220 pounds. The cave days ask for moderate fitness, and the Cueva Ventana day for a high level. Several listings advise against the trip for pregnant travelers and people with spinal injuries or heart conditions.
Prefer the rainforest?
The El Yunque page compares 17 tours, from slide days under 30 EUR to private hikes.
