Waterfalls in Dominica and the Tours That Reach Them
20 tours, typically 60 to 120 EUR. Trafalgar is a 10-minute walk from the parking area; Middleham takes about two hours there and back.
Dominica packs its waterfalls into a few kilometers of the Roseau valley, and the walk decides your day more than the tour does. Trafalgar Falls is a 10-minute walk from the parking area to a viewing platform, according to the Ministry of Tourism. Middleham Falls is a round trip of about two hours on a trail. Ti'tou Gorge, which many listings sell as a waterfall, is a basalt gorge that you swim up. The five stops most listings use (Trafalgar, Middleham, Ti'tou Gorge, Emerald Pool and Freshwater Lake) all lie within 14 km of Roseau in a straight line. The 20 tours typically cost 60 to 120 EUR for about 5 hours. This page compares the falls, the fees and the storms, and then sends you to the Dominica Waterfall Tours page to compare the tours themselves. That makes Dominica unusual among the waterfall countries on this site: nobody needs a long drive, so the difference between a good day and a poor one is the hike, the fee and the weather, not the distance.
Heights do not agree. The Ministry of Tourism gives about 125 ft and 75 ft for the two Trafalgar falls, and other sites give figures up to twice as high; we use the ministry's. The same goes for Middleham, whose quoted height depends on whom you ask. We read the 20 itineraries for what each stop actually is, because in Dominica the word waterfall is applied to a gorge, a pool, a canyon and a pair of falls alike. For the other Caribbean countries on this site, see Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

The waterfalls of Dominica, ranked by effort
Most of the sites sit in or beside Morne Trois Pitons National Park, which was established in July 1975, listed by UNESCO in 1997 and covers about 7,000 hectares. Trafalgar's twin falls are known locally as Papa and Mama: the left one, Papa, is the higher, and a landslide in September 1995 buried the hot springs at its base, according to the Ministry of Tourism. The right one, Mama, is lower and stronger. The table ranks the main sites by what it takes to reach them, not by height, because that is what decides a day. It counts the listings that name each site in a title or a stop.
| Site | Effort | Reported height | Swim? | Listings that name it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trafalgar Falls | A 10-minute walk to a viewing platform | About 125 ft and 75 ft (Ministry of Tourism) | View from the platform | At least 5 |
| Emerald Pool | About 30 minutes round trip | About 40 ft | Yes, in the pool, by natural steps | 2 |
| Middleham Falls | About 2 hours round trip, medium difficulty | From just under 200 ft to 80 m, by source | A pool at the base | 4 |
| Ti'tou Gorge | A swim of 30 to 50 m from the entrance | A small fall at the far end | Yes; life jackets are worn | At least 7 |
| Sari Sari, Jacko, Spanny, Hibiscus | Longer walks, some with river crossings, per guides | Not stated | Depends on the site | None in the titles |
| Canyons with Extreme Dominica and TNK | Harness, neoprene suit and helmet with a guide | Rappels and swims | Yes | 4 listings |
What you can do without a tour
Quite a lot. The Trafalgar viewpoint is a 10-minute walk, and Nature Island's guide says Middleham Falls needs no guide: it is 3 to 4 km round trip from the Sylvania or Cochrane trailheads, with no scrambling, and parking is free. Ti'tou Gorge is a swim you can do at the entrance with a life jacket, and Nature Island advises against it after heavy rain. What a tour adds is the car and the order. The Forestry Division charges a site fee at the main sites, and the fee pages disagree. One published schedule charges a fee per site, with a cheaper weekly pass. Another sets a higher per-site rate, a day rate and a weekly pass. We could not tell which is current. At least three of the 20 listings say outright that the fee is included; check the rest.
Two fee pages, two sets of prices. Ask at the entrance.
Emerald Pool, the easy swim
Emerald Pool, in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, is the first stop on the day tours that include it. A guide leads you through forest, past an overlook with a wooden deck, to a pool fed by a waterfall of about 40 ft, with natural steps to enter. One listing puts the overlook within five minutes of the start, with an option to walk another ten down to the water. It is the lowest-effort swim on the island, and it is the one most likely to be crowded when a ship is in. Two of the 20 listings name it: a 5.5-hour Emerald Pool and Trafalgar day and a 6-hour day with a black-sand beach and a sulphur spa, both in the 60 to 120 EUR band.
Ti'tou Gorge is not a waterfall
The listings sell it as one, and the sticker is misleading. Ti'tou Gorge is a narrow basalt gorge with a small waterfall at the far end (the photo beside this text shows a swimmer below a small waterfall in the jungle, an illustration and not the gorge), reached by swimming 30 to 50 meters upstream from the entrance. It appears in at least seven listings, from a two-hour trip in the 30 to 60 EUR band to a private minibus tour above 250 EUR, and one of them says it is fine if you cannot swim. Another, the Middleham and Ti'tou day, requires life jackets in the gorge. If you want water falling from a height, Trafalgar and Middleham are the choices. If you want the swim, Ti'tou is the one.
Where the falls are
The map is short on distances, which is the point. In a straight line from Roseau, Trafalgar is 6.7 km away, Ti'tou Gorge 7.7, Freshwater Lake 9.8, Emerald Pool 13.9 and Mero Beach 14.3. The Wotten Waven sulphur springs, which most day tours add, are 5.9 km out. Nobody here needs a long drive, so tour length is a function of the hike, the stops and whether you add a reef or a beach. The island days run 2 to 7 hours, with a median of 4.8, and 70% of the listings include pickup. None of the sources we read gives a driving time from Roseau, so we have not invented one.
What a tour costs on an island this small
The middle half of the listings runs roughly 60 to 250 EUR around a typical price in the 60 to 120 EUR band. The floor is a two-hour scenic drive with hot springs in the 30 to 60 EUR band; the ceiling is a private four-hour minibus tour above 250 EUR for the whole vehicle. The four canyoning listings, roughly 60 to 500 EUR, typically cost 120 to 250 EUR, about double the island's other days. Five listings are private. The prices are a band above the Dominican Republic's, which typically run 30 to 60 EUR, and in line with Puerto Rico's, because the days are small-vehicle island tours, not shore-excursion buses.

When to go
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and Maria showed what that means here. Some pages call December to April the dry season and the best time for the falls. None of them cites a source, and we found no flow calendar for the island, so we do not rank months by water. The matrix follows the storm season and the specific warnings for each site.

Questions about waterfalls in Dominica
Do you need a guide for Middleham Falls?
Not according to Nature Island, which describes a 3 to 4 km round trip from the Sylvania or Cochrane trailheads with no scrambling. One listing calls the trail not easy and puts the round trip at 125 minutes. The site fee applies, and a guide helps you read the weather.
How tall is Trafalgar Falls?
The Ministry of Tourism gives about 125 ft for the left fall, Papa, and about 75 ft for the right, Mama. Other sites give figures up to twice as high. The left fall was once higher still, according to the ministry. We use the official numbers.
Is Ti'tou Gorge a waterfall?
No. It is a narrow basalt gorge with a small waterfall at the far end, and you swim 30 to 50 meters to reach it. Life jackets are worn on at least one listing, and another says it is fine if you cannot swim.
What is the site fee?
The published schedules disagree on the amounts: one has a per-site fee and a weekly pass, the other a higher per-site fee, a day rate and a weekly pass. We could not tell which is current, and passes are not sold online. At least three listings say the fee is included. Ask the Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division or the ticket office.
How far is Trafalgar Falls from Roseau?
About 6.7 km in a straight line, from the coordinates in the listings, and a 10-minute walk from the parking area to the platform. None of our sources gives a driving time, so plan from the listing's own timetable.
