Niagara Falls tours: both sides, the 1950 treaty and which tour to book

103 tours in five formats, typically 60 to 120 EUR, from a 3-hour boat ride on the American side to 5-day trips from New York. After tourist hours the treaty minimum flow is halved.

Under the 1950 treaty, Niagara Falls must carry at least 2,832 m³/s during daytime tourist hours from April to October, and at least 1,416 m³/s at any other time. The rest of this page follows from facts like that one: the falls are managed, shared between two countries, and sold in five different ways. We list 103 Niagara Falls tours typically at 60 to 120 EUR. They come as boat rides on the American side, a boat and a tunnel behind the falls on the Canadian side, coach days from Toronto, trips from New York that last a day or five, and evening tours. This page is about the place: how it formed, which side to see, what the official tickets cost in 2026, and how to choose among the five. Each format has a page of its own, linked below.

The place comes first, then the choice, and the choice mostly follows the city you sleep in: a bed in Toronto points to the coach tours, one in New York to the long trips, one on the Canadian shore to the boat and the tunnel, and a free evening to the night page. If you already know where you are leaving from, go straight to one of the five pages: American Side, Canadian Side, Niagara Falls Tours from Toronto, Day Trips and Multi-Day Tours from New York or Niagara Falls at Night. Three more tours, from Boston and Washington, D.C., belong to none of the formats and are listed on this page. The rest of Canada's falls, and why Niagara is only one of three places with tours, are on the Canada page. Niagara appears under both Canada and United States in the menu, and it is one page: the falls sit on the border, and so does the advice about which shore to pick and what to carry across.

How Niagara Falls formed and how fast it moves

The ice left this peninsula about 12,500 years ago, according to Niagara Parks. The International Joint Commission (IJC) puts the falls at the lip of the escarpment at about the same time, and the New York State Museum dates the start of the river to 12,000 years ago. Since then the falls have cut back about 11 km (7 miles) upstream, and the gorge you see from the boat is what they left. Its walls are 400 to 440 million years old. The IJC puts the average retreat at about 1 m a year over the whole history and the current rate at about 0.1 m a year. The sources do not agree on today's rate: the New York State Museum says about 1 ft (0.3 m) a year, and Niagara Parks says the 1950 treaty slowed it to about 30 cm every ten years. Niagara is far from the tallest waterfall, and Niagara Parks says so: about 500 are higher. It is a heavy one, with more than 168,000 m³ a minute at the daytime peak.

The Horseshoe

Three falls, and numbers that do not agree

Niagara is three waterfalls: the Horseshoe, the American Falls and the small Bridal Veil, split by two islands. Niagara Falls USA puts about 90% of the flow over the Horseshoe, and the IJC says the American Falls takes 10% to 20%, so the Horseshoe takes 80% to 90%. Most of the Horseshoe lies on the Canadian side. The photo shows its crest from the Canadian shore.

Ask for the size of any of them and the official sources give different answers, so the table that follows names the source for each figure and does not choose one.

Two countries, two cities, one river

The same water has a Canadian and an American shore, each with its own attractions and ticket office. On the American side, Niagara Falls State Park was set up in 1885 to a design by Olmsted and Vaux, and takes in Goat Island and the paths to the edge of the American Falls. On the Canadian side, Niagara Parks runs the promenade along the Horseshoe, the tunnels behind it and a power station you can walk through. The Rainbow Bridge, in the photograph at the top, joins the two cities.

Which side is better? The Canadian side faces the Horseshoe. Our read of the listings is that the Canadian side wins on what you see and the American side on how close you get, on the Cave of the Winds decks beside Bridal Veil and on a boat that enters the Horseshoe's basin. The American Side and Canadian Side pages read the tours for each shore, and the two 6-hour combos on the first one cover both.

The Canadian side has the view. The American side has the water.

Crossing is the catch. The listings that cross the border tell guests to carry a valid passport or other accepted border papers, and one warns that a booking can be cancelled without refund if you do not confirm the requirements with the operator at least 24 hours before.

One date will move. Journey Behind the Falls is open, but Niagara Parks announced a redevelopment on 12 March 2026 and the work began on 23 March. A restored tunnel with a covered, heated platform is promised for spring 2027 and a new Rainbow Platform for spring 2028, though the press release says May 2028. A listing that sells the tunnel in 2026 sells it beside a construction site.

The treaty that sets the flow

A treaty signed on 27 February 1950 divides the Niagara River between power and scenery. In tourist hours the flow over the falls must be at least 2,832 m³/s. At any other time the minimum is 1,416 m³/s, and the water above the minimums, once other priority uses are met, is shared equally between the two countries for power. Tourist hours exist only from 1 April to 31 October: from November to March the minimum is 1,416 m³/s at every hour. The table gives the hours as the IJC publishes them, in Eastern Standard Time. A minimum is not a measured flow, and the sources we read do not give the actual hourly flow.

Minimum flow over the falls under the 1950 treaty, as the IJC gives it (hours in Eastern Standard Time)
Period Tourist hours Minimum flow over the falls
1 April to 15 September8 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST2,832 m³/s (100,000 cfs)
16 September to 31 October8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST2,832 m³/s (100,000 cfs)
Any other timeOutside the hours above1,416 m³/s (50,000 cfs)

After tourist hours

The lights stay on when the minimum drops

The Niagara Falls Illumination Board has lit the falls all year since 1925, with programmable LEDs since 2016. From April to October the treaty minimum is 2,832 m³/s while tourist hours last and 1,416 m³/s afterwards, so once the tourist hours end the law asks for half as much water. The 2026 nightly fireworks ended on 12 October. The evening tours have their own page, Niagara Falls at Night.

Which Niagara Falls tour to choose

The five formats are about where you start, much more than about the falls, since the same boat sells in all of them. The table puts them side by side, read from 100 listings.

One page for each: American Side, Canadian Side, Niagara Falls Tours from Toronto, Day Trips and Multi-Day Tours from New York and Niagara Falls at Night. Three tours do not fit any of them and sit directly on this page. From Boston, a 2-day tour with an overnight stay is in the 250 to 500 EUR band. A 2-day small-group trip from Washington, D.C. is in the 250 to 500 EUR band, and a 3-day tour that adds New York City on the way back is in the 500 to 1,000 EUR band. They reach the falls in the evening for the night view, and the daytime Classic Tour, with Cave of the Winds and the boat when it runs, is an option on top. With 56, 38 and 3 reviews, ratings of 4.5, 4.7 and 4.3 say little.

Median price by format, with the middle half of listings as the bar. New York looks dear because half of its 20 listings last several days. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

New York is the outlier. Its middle half runs from roughly 120 to 1,000 EUR, while the other four formats sit in the 60 to 120 EUR band, and its shortest listing takes 14 hours and its longest 5 days: a different purchase. Behind the 103 tours stand 42 operators, but Over the Falls Tours alone holds 34% of the reviews.

Toronto sits about 70 km from the falls as the crow flies, over the western end of Lake Ontario, and guides give 1.5 to 2 hours by road. Buffalo is roughly 25 km away on the American shore.

Questions about Niagara Falls tours

Which side of Niagara Falls is better?

The Canadian side for the view, the American side for the closeness. The Horseshoe faces the Canadian shore. The American side has Cave of the Winds beside Bridal Veil. With a day and the documents, do both.

Is one day enough for Niagara Falls?

Yes. In our read of the listings, a day is enough for a boat ride, one walk and an evening view. Only the multi-day trips from New York, Boston and Washington, D.C. need more, and those sell hotel nights and long road hours more than extra water.

Can you do Niagara Falls from New York in a day?

A single day from New York is long. The shortest of the 20 listings on the New York page is 14 hours, and half of them last two to five days. Operators put the road at 7 to 8 hours each way. The New York page sorts the day coaches from the hotel trips.

Do I need a passport for Niagara Falls?

Tours that cross between the two sides tell guests to carry a valid passport or other accepted border papers, and one asks you to reconfirm a day ahead. Each country has its own entry rules for your nationality, so check them first.

Is the Maid of the Mist running?

In 2026 the season runs from 24 April to 8 November, with hours of 9:00 to 17:00 from 28 September to 31 October and 9:00 to 16:00 from 1 to 8 November. We have no confirmed hours for earlier dates. The company sets the ticket price, a child of 6 to 12 pays less, and under 6 is free; check its current schedule. The Canadian boat has its own operator and dates.

Are there still fireworks at Niagara Falls?

The nightly series ended on 12 October 2026; it ran at 22:00 from 15 May. What remains are special evenings: longer shows on 1 and 4 July, and New Year's Eve at 20:00 and at midnight, according to Niagara Parks.

Comparing Niagara with the rest of Canada?

The Canada page sets Niagara against Montmorency Falls and the Rockies on height, flow, price and season.
