Waterfalls in Portugal: Madeira, the Azores and the Mainland
34 tours on two islands, roughly 30 to 250 EUR for a canyon and typically 60 to 120 EUR. The mainland falls have no tour here, and this page says why that matters.
All 34 waterfall tours we list for Portugal start on an island. Fourteen leave from Madeira, twenty from São Miguel in the Azores, and none from the mainland, where the falls of Arouca, Alvão and Peneda-Gerês have no tour on this site. The typical listing costs 60 to 120 EUR, 53% of the 34 are guided canyoning descents rather than viewpoints, and the 4.91 rating rests on 3,153 reviews. This page puts the two islands side by side on price, rain and what each one asks of you, and says plainly what is missing. The cheapest tour is a road day in Madeira under 30 EUR, the dearest a private day on São Miguel above 250 EUR, and the gap between them says more about the format than about the waterfalls. If you are searching for waterfalls in Portugal, the first decision is the island, and the figures below make it easier.
Every figure here is a median of the 34 listings we read on 22 October 2026, not of the whole market. Where two sources disagree we say so instead of picking one. One operator, Madeira Island Tours, holds 17% of the reviews, so the rating leans on it. The island pages go further: Madeira covers the levada walks, the 2026 booking rule and the canyoning levels, and the Azores page covers the three São Miguel canyons and the Nordeste road days.

Waterfalls in Portugal: what the two islands share and where they split
Madeira and the Azores are roughly 1,000 km of Atlantic apart and each needs its own flight, so you will not do both on one tour or one weekend. They do sell the same core product. A guided descent of a stream canyon, with rappels, jumps and swims, is 64% of Madeira's 14 listings and 45% of the Azores' 20. What differs is everything around the canyon. Madeira has the levada paths, a new booking rule on its classified trails and two road days under 60 EUR. The Azores have one island, São Miguel, a free park around their best-known fall, and lunch in a quarter of the listings.
If you want to walk to a waterfall, go to Madeira. If you want to get wet in one, either island will do, and price will not decide it.

Why a small country has these waterfalls
Both archipelagos are volcanic and sit in the path of Atlantic weather. Madeira rises to Pico Ruivo at 1,862 m close to the sea, so rain from the north gathers in steep valleys and drops to the coast in short falls. The Azores spread over nine islands, with rainfall running from about 700 mm a year on Santa Maria to 1,600 mm on Flores, and São Miguel's rivers cut through volcanic rock into the canyons that operators sell. The mainland falls come from the granite uplands of the north. These are short, steep streams more than big single drops, which is why most of the tours are about getting into the water.
What the two islands cost
The medians sit in the same band, which is nothing. The bars say more. Madeira's middle half of listings stays within roughly 60 to 120 EUR, narrow enough that you can budget before you pick a tour. The Azores' runs to roughly 60 to 250 EUR, because the shared-tour prices alone span roughly 30 to 250 EUR, from a 2.5-hour descent of Ribeira dos Caldeirões to a five-hour day at Ribeira da Salga with a picnic lunch. The four private tours sit at the top, at roughly 120 to 500 EUR.
Two cautions about reading these numbers. The low end in Madeira, under 30 EUR, is an eight-hour small-group road day where the waterfall is one stop of nine, so it is not a canyoning price. Private tours are priced per person like the shared ones, with four exceptions: the Porto Moniz day in Madeira and three São Miguel days, all in the 120 to 500 EUR range, quote one price for the whole group. Check the unit on those four before you compare them with a typical seat.
Where the tours start, and where the mainland falls are
The map shows the gap at a glance. Squares mark where tours begin: Funchal on Madeira, Ponta Delgada on São Miguel. Both islands are small, Madeira about 57 km long and São Miguel about 60, so a base in either town reaches its waterfalls in a day. The mainland dots, Arado in Peneda-Gerês and Fisgas do Ermelo in Alvão, have no square beside them. That is a hole in our catalogue, not a verdict on the falls.
Mainland
The mainland falls we do not sell
The mainland waterfalls are in the north. Peneda-Gerês became Portugal's only national park on 8 May 1971 and covers 695.93 km². Arouca has Frecha da Mizarela, the Alvão mountains have Fisgas do Ermelo and Cai de Alto, and Gerês has Fecha de Barjas and Arado.
We give no heights for them and make no claim about the tallest waterfall in Portugal. Published figures for Mizarela differ by about 10 m (almost 200 ft against 70 m), those for Fisgas by much more, and we found no primary source that settles either. Day trips from Porto to Gerês are sold on the large marketplaces, but none was in our catalogue on 22 October 2026, so there is nothing here to compare them with.
The waterfalls that matter, and how you reach them
| Waterfall | Where | Height | How you see it | Tour here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Risco | Madeira, Rabaçal | About 100 m | PR trail with a SIMplifica booking | Yes, levada walks |
| 25 Fontes | Madeira, Rabaçal | About 30 m | PR6 trail, 8.6 km round trip | Yes, levada walks |
| Véu da Noiva | Madeira, north coast | Not given | Viewpoint beside the coast road | Yes, road days |
| Ribeira dos Caldeirões | São Miguel, Nordeste | Several falls | Free park, always open | Yes, canyoning and road days |
| Salto do Cabrito | São Miguel | 20 to 40 m by source; longest rappel 16 m | Guided canyoning descent | Yes, canyoning |
| Poço do Bacalhau | Flores, Azores | About 90 m | Five-minute walk | No |
| Frecha da Mizarela | Arouca, mainland | Sources conflict | Independent visit | No |
| Fisgas do Ermelo | Alvão, mainland | Sources conflict | Independent visit | No |
Heights for Risco, 25 Fontes and Poço do Bacalhau come from Wikipedia and are rounded. The Salto do Cabrito figure is the spread between sources (one listing calls it a double waterfall of about 40 meters), and the longest rappel on the descent is 16 m by one operator's own listing. Treat them as orders of magnitude.
Madeira
Madeira: levadas, forest and a new booking rule
Madeira's waterfalls are best known from the levadas, the narrow irrigation channels cut along the hillsides with a path beside them. Two of our 14 listings are levada walks in the Rabaçal valley, both in the 60 to 120 EUR band. Since 1 January 2026 every classified PR trail needs a reservation on the regional SIMplifica portal, with a 30-minute entry slot and a small fee for a single trail, so an independent 25 Fontes walk is no longer something you decide on the morning.
The rest of the island's listings are nine canyoning descents and three road days. The full breakdown is on the Madeira waterfall tours page.
Madeira or the Azores for your group
Families have the clearest rules to read. A Madeira Level 1 canyoning listing takes children from 8 years, 125 cm and 25 kg. The Fun Activities listings for Ribeira dos Caldeirões ask for 1.20 m and 20 kg, and Salto do Cabrito sets the floor at 14 according to an operator listing. All say you need not swim, only be at ease in the water. Weight caps matter as much as age: the same operator's Caldeirões and Ribeira da Salga listings stop at 120 kg.
If someone in the group will not get wet, the Azores road days at roughly 60 to 120 EUR include lunch and cover several falls, which makes them the better value. Madeira's Rabaçal walk, at about the same price, is the better walk, though a hiker should read the Madeira page first. The Azores page sorts the three canyons by price and difficulty.
The Azores are the easier trip for a mixed group; Madeira is the better one for people who came to walk.
When to go
We found no flow data for Madeira, the Azores or the mainland north, so this page has no month-by-month table. Rain falls all year in the Azores, from about 700 mm on Santa Maria to 1,600 mm on Flores. Canyoning operators say they run in any season when conditions are safe. Read the listing and the weather before you book.
Questions about waterfalls in Portugal
Are there waterfall tours on mainland Portugal?
Not on this site. All 34 of our listings are on Madeira or São Miguel. The mainland has real waterfalls, among them Frecha da Mizarela in Arouca, Fisgas do Ermelo in Alvão and Fecha de Barjas in Peneda-Gerês, and day trips to Gerês from Porto exist on the big marketplaces. None was in our catalogue on 22 October 2026, so we cannot compare prices or inclusions.
Madeira or the Azores for waterfalls?
Madeira if you want to walk to them along a levada, the Azores if you also want free parkland and road days with lunch. Canyoning prices are close, both typically 60 to 120 EUR, so price will not settle it. Pick by the kind of day you want.
Do I need to book the walking trails in Madeira?
Yes. Since 1 January 2026 classified PR trails need a SIMplifica reservation with a 30-minute entry slot, and the official guidance says the rule applies to guided groups too. A single trail costs a small fee. One Rabaçal listing says the fee is not in its tour price, so check before you book.
Do I need to swim to go canyoning?
The listings we read say no, but you must be comfortable in water. Wetsuit, helmet and harness are supplied. Both islands' listings set minimum heights and weights instead.
How much does a waterfall tour in Portugal cost?
The typical price is 60 to 120 EUR, from under 30 to more than 250 EUR. A canyoning descent runs roughly 30 to 250 EUR, a road day with lunch in the Azores 60 to 120 EUR, and a private day roughly 60 to 500 EUR. Four of the seven private tours, all in the 120 to 500 EUR range, quote one price for the whole group; the others are per person. The cheapest Madeira day, under 30 EUR, is a scenic drive with one waterfall stop.
