Azores Waterfall Tours: Canyoning and Road Days on São Miguel
20 tours from roughly 30 to 500 EUR, nine of them canyoning. Caldeirões descents cost roughly 30 to 120 EUR, Salto do Cabrito 60 to 120, and a day to the Nordeste with lunch 60 to 120.
The 20 Azores waterfall tours we list run from roughly 30 to 500 EUR, and where you land depends on one decision: group or private. Sixteen group listings sit between roughly 30 and 250 EUR, typically 60 to 120 EUR for the canyoning ones. The four private tours cost roughly 120 to 500 EUR; three of them quote one price for the whole group, and the fourth is per person. Nine of the 20 are canyoning descents, and every listing starts on São Miguel, the largest island of the archipelago, so this page is about waterfalls in the Azores as São Miguel sells them: three canyons, a free park, a handful of road days to the Nordeste and a few walks. The cheap end is a 2.5-hour descent at Ribeira dos Caldeirões, the dear end a private day in the Nordeste, and the Portugal page compares both with Madeira.
These are the 20 listings we read on 22 October 2026. One operator, Fun Activities, holds 41% of the reviews, nearly all on its 475-review Caldeirões descent, so the 4.91 rating leans on it. One listing shows 30 hours; its text describes a single day, so we treat that as a typo and left it out of the durations. Prices are per person, private tours included, with three exceptions: the three private Nordeste days, in the 120 to 500 EUR range, quote one price for the whole group. Before you book an Azores listing, check three things: which canyon, the unit of the price, and the meeting point. For the sister island, the Madeira page covers levada walks and the 2026 booking rule.

Why São Miguel has canyons to descend
São Miguel is a volcanic island about 60 km long, one of nine in the archipelago, and it is wet. Rainfall across the Azores runs from about 700 mm a year on Santa Maria to 1,600 mm on Flores (Wikipedia), and on São Miguel that water cuts short, steep streams into volcanic rock. The result is many small falls into deep green pools, not one big drop. One Salto do Cabrito operator describes its canyon as lying in a geothermal region, with hot springs along the river.
Come to São Miguel for water you can get into. The tall falls are on other islands.
Ribeira dos Caldeirões
The free park, and the descent beside it
The Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park in Nordeste is free to enter and always open, according to the regional tourism site, and one listing calls its main fall perhaps the most photographed in the Azores. Several falls drop around restored stone watermills in a landscaped valley.
Five of our listings are named for the Ribeira dos Caldeirões canyon. One of them meets at the park car park and says you will see a waterfall across the street. They cost roughly 30 to 120 EUR for 2.5 to 3 hours, and the Fun Activities listing gives a minimum height of 1.20 m and a weight range of 20 to 120 kg, with no swimming skill needed. One operator's published guide puts the longest rappel at 8 m. A Tiqets listing adds jumps into plunge pools from five meters, so ask which course you are getting.
Canyoning on São Miguel: three canyons and what each costs
Most Azores canyoning listings use one of three canyons, and the choice drives the price. Ribeira dos Caldeirões is the easy one, with slides, jumps and short rappels. Salto do Cabrito is the technical one, with the longest rappel at 16 m according to an operator listing and a minimum age of 14. Ribeira da Salga, a longer day, meets at the Moagem Café parking lot in Salga at 9:30, and the price, in the 120 to 250 EUR band, includes a picnic lunch, photos and videos.
| Canyon | Listings | Price band per person | Listed length | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ribeira dos Caldeirões | 5 | roughly 30 to 120 EUR | 2.5 to 3 hours | 1.20 m minimum height; one meets at the park |
| Half-day descent, canyon not named | 1 | 60 to 120 EUR | 3 hours | Ask which canyon |
| Salto do Cabrito | 2 | 60 to 120 EUR | 4 hours | Level 2; up to 8 travelers on the dearer one |
| Ribeira da Salga | 1 | 120 to 250 EUR | 5 hours | Picnic lunch, 9:30 start |
| Waterfall climbing, no ropes | 1 | 60 to 120 EUR | 3 hours | No ropes or harnesses |
The Cabrito pair deserves a flag. The same canyon costs more with one operator than with another, both in the 60 to 120 EUR band, and the listings do not say why. The dearer one states Level 2 and a group of up to 8. Before paying the difference, ask about group size, equipment and photos. The Caldeirões listings are the safest bet for a first descent, and the Tiqets one, also in the 60 to 120 EUR band, is the only listing sold through Tiqets rather than Viator.
The chart shows two clusters and a long tail. On the left, the 2.5 to 3 hour descents, mostly Caldeirões, sit between roughly 30 and 120 EUR. Past them, 4 hours in the 60 to 120 EUR band is Cabrito and 5 hours in the 120 to 250 EUR band is Salga. On the right the 7 to 8 hour road days cost 60 to 120 EUR. The orange marks are the private tours, at roughly 120 to 500 EUR for four to seven hours, and they sit above everything else. The 30-hour listing is left off.
The Nordeste road days
If nobody wants to get wet, the full-day tours are the better value. Three of them cost 60 to 120 EUR for about eight hours and include lunch. The first runs through the Nordeste, the oldest part of the island, with stops at the Porto Formoso waterfall, Salto da Farinha, Cascata do Risco, the Caldeirões park, a regional lunch, the Arnel lighthouse and a viewpoint. It picks up in Ponta Delgada, Lagoa and Ribeira Grande, with a maximum of 8 people per van. The small-group day adds Cascata do Limbo and a hike on the Moinho do Félix trail.
To be plain about it: the waterfalls are four of nine stops, each a short walk or a viewpoint, and the rest is coast and gardens. With lunch included at 60 to 120 EUR, that beats the Salga canyon, in the 120 to 250 EUR band, on price and on dryness, and loses on everything you cannot do from a path.
Other islands
Walks, private tours and the islands we do not cover
Three walks fill the rest of the group listings. Moinho do Félix with a tea plantation takes 4.5 hours, the Sanguinho hike with Salto do Prego and the Furnas hot springs takes seven, and a waterfalls hiking tour in the Nordeste fills the rest. All three cost roughly 60 to 120 EUR and are on São Miguel.
The four private tours cost roughly 120 to 500 EUR. Three of them quote one price for the whole group and the fourth, a private walking route to Salto do Cabrito and Salto da Farinha, is per person, so divide the three by the people in the car before comparing them with a canyon seat. We have no tours on the other eight islands. Visit Azores lists canyoning on São Miguel, São Jorge and Flores, with Flores the most varied. Poço do Bacalhau on Flores falls about 90 m, is a five-minute walk, and one regional guide describes it as the island's only freshwater swimming spot.
Where the falls are on São Miguel
Ponta Delgada on the south coast is the base for almost every road day, and the map shows why a tour starting there is long. Ribeira dos Caldeirões lies in the far north-east, Salto do Cabrito sits in the middle of the north side near Ribeira Grande, where its operators meet you, and Salto do Prego is in the south-east near Furnas. Canyon operators mostly meet you at the canyon, with pickup offered only "if respective option is chosen and available" in one listing, so check before you book. Late arrivals are left behind, one operator warns.
When the falls run
We do not give a month table for the Azores. Rain falls all year, and the listings say they run rain or shine when it is safe, so none of the tours closes for a season. Summer is the driest and warmest, which suits anyone who wants the road days and the walks. For canyoning it hardly matters: one Cabrito operator calls its canyon good for any time of year. The Viator listings offer a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure.
Choosing a tour, and the mistakes people make
A first canyon should be Caldeirões, at roughly 30 to 120 EUR, because it is the easiest and the cheapest. Take Cabrito on the second day if you want rappels. The road day suits people who want several falls and a coast.
The mistakes come from the fine print. Fun Activities caps weight at 120 kg and the harness waist at 1.30 m. Shoe size goes in the special requirements box at checkout. You bring your own towel, swimwear and sunscreen. And some private tours are group prices. Read the unit, then read the meeting point, then the cancellation line.
Questions about Azores waterfall tours
Is canyoning in the Azores for beginners?
The Ribeira dos Caldeirões listings are. The Fun Activities listing asks for a minimum height of 1.20 m and 20 to 120 kg, no swimming skill, only comfort in the water, and they cost roughly 30 to 120 EUR for 2.5 to 3 hours. Salto do Cabrito is a Level 2 canyon with a minimum age of 14, so leave it for a second day.
Do I need to know how to swim?
No. The listings say you only need to be comfortable in the water. The Caldeirões and Salga listings include wetsuit, helmet, harness, boots and insurance, and some add photos and videos. Bring a towel, swimwear and sunscreen.
Can I see the waterfalls without canyoning?
Yes. The Ribeira dos Caldeirões park is free and always open. The Nordeste road days at 60 to 120 EUR include lunch and stop at several falls, and the Moinho do Félix walk takes 4.5 hours in the same band.
Which island has the waterfalls?
All 20 of our tours are on São Miguel. Flores has Poço do Bacalhau, about 90 m, and canyoning exists on São Jorge and Flores, but we had no listings there on 22 October 2026.
Why does the same canyon cost different amounts?
The listings do not say. The dearer Salto do Cabrito one states Level 2 and up to 8 travelers. Ask both operators about group size, equipment and photos before you pay the difference.
