Waterfalls in Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls, Mutarazi and the Eastern Highlands

91 tours, all at Victoria Falls, typically 60 to 120 EUR. The country's tallest falls, in the Eastern Highlands, have none.

Zimbabwe has several well-known waterfalls and sells tours to one of them. All 91 tours on this site go to Victoria Falls, typically for 60 to 120 EUR, and Victoria Falls shares its water with Zambia. The country's tallest drop, Mutarazi Falls in the Eastern Highlands, is quoted at anything from 480 to 770 m depending on the source and has no tour in the catalogs we read: you drive to it and walk 600 m. This page is the country view of waterfalls in Zimbabwe: which are worth the trip, which you book and which you drive to, what each costs to reach, and when each has water. The detail on Victoria Falls is on its own page, and the numbers here come from the 91 listings read on 22 October 2026 and from public sources for the falls themselves.

Victoria Falls sits on the border with Zambia. We file it under Zimbabwe, the menu lists it under Zambia too, and the page covers both banks, with the choice between them in a paragraph below. For the place itself, with its months, gates and five tour formats, go to the Victoria Falls page. This one is about the rest of the country and about deciding where Zimbabwe fits in your plan. If you only have time for one waterfall, the answer is Victoria Falls, and the rest of this page explains what you give up by not going east.

Waterfalls in Zimbabwe, side by side

The table lists the five waterfalls we could place with a source. It is short on purpose: Zimbabwe's falls are poorly catalogued, and for two of them we found no height we trust. Where we found nothing, the cell says so.

Zimbabwe's main waterfalls: height, access and whether this site sells a tour
Waterfall Where Height How you reach it Tours here

Nyangombe FallsNyanga National ParkNo figure foundNo access details we could verifyNone
Bridal Veil FallsChimanimani mountainsNo figure foundRemote; no access details we could verifyNone

Read the height column with care. Mutarazi is 762 m in the Zimbabwe field guide, 772 m on Wikipedia and 479 m in the World Waterfall Database, which marks its own figure unconfirmed. Until someone measures it, "somewhere between 480 and 770 m" is the honest answer. Even at the low end it is the tallest of the falls listed here.

Why Zimbabwe has two kinds of waterfall

In the west, the Zambezi runs over layered Jurassic basalt and falls into a crack in it. That is Victoria Falls: a big river over a step of about 108 m. In the east the Eastern Highlands run along the Mozambique border and rise to 2,593 m inside Nyanga National Park, where Mount Nyangani is Zimbabwe's highest point. Streams leave the plateau over granite cliffs. Mutarazi falls in two stages into the Honde Valley, and the Pungwe River drops 240 m into its gorge.

The difference matters for planning. A huge river drops a modest height and keeps some flow all year. A small stream drops a very long way and is mostly a rainy-season event, which is why the Zimbabwe field guide gives February to April as the time of the greatest flows at Mutarazi.

The one waterfall with a tour market

The aerial photo shows the falls and, at the bottom, the Victoria Falls Bridge, which opened in September 1905 and carries the border.

No other Zimbabwean waterfall turned up as a tour product in our catalog sweep. That is the practical reason the country page is a Victoria Falls page with an honest paragraph about everything else.

Zimbabwe side or Zambia side, in one paragraph

The two banks give different views, so see both if you have a whole day. The Zimbabwe bank faces the wall of falls; the Zambian bank stands near the top and holds Devil's Pool. If you have half a day, we would take the Zimbabwe side. A whole day needs the KAZA UniVisa where you qualify, which Zambia Tourism lists as valid for 30 days in both countries; check the issuing authority for the fee, then cross the bridge. The both-sides page reads the 18 listings that do it, and the Victoria Falls page sets the two banks side by side.

What waterfall tours in Zimbabwe cost

Chart of the prices of the 91 Zimbabwe listings on waterfalls.travel, median 81.6 EUR
Median price of a waterfall tour in each of the 21 countries on this site; the bar is the middle half of listings. Zimbabwe, in the 60 to 120 EUR band, is 15th from the top. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

On price, Zimbabwe sits in the lower middle: typically 60 to 120 EUR, cheaper than Brazil and Costa Rica, in the same band as Canada, Bosnia and Portugal, and dearer than Morocco, which sits under 30 EUR. The chart's bar runs from roughly 30 to 500 EUR, the middle half of the 91 tours, and it hides two things. The low end is not cheap safaris but a wall of guided walks under 30 EUR that exclude the park gate. The top quarter is nearly all safari packages: all 20 of them cost more than 250 EUR, and the dearest is above 1,000 EUR.

Reviews are lopsided too. The 14 helicopter and microlight listings hold 4,254 of the 6,159 reviews, 69%, and one operator, Chikopokopo Helicopters, accounts for 65% of the lot. The 4.86 average is largely a helicopter rating. The walking tours' ratings are on their own pages. Private tours are priced per person here; none of the 31 quotes a group price.

Which waterfall for whom

A first-timer with one day should book Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side and spend the spare hours on the bridge. A traveler with a car and a spare day in the east can pair Mutarazi with Pungwe Falls, since one entrance fee covers both.

How far apart the waterfalls are

Squares are the usual bases, dots the waterfalls discussed here. Victoria Falls is in the far west; Mutarazi and Bridal Veil Falls lie on the eastern border. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial; map data Natural Earth, place positions © OpenStreetMap contributors

Zimbabwe is not a country you tour for its waterfalls in a week. The two ends are far apart, and nothing on this site links them.

The picture it gives is plain enough: Victoria Falls and Livingstone are a short transfer apart, while the Eastern Highlands are a separate trip from Harare, 196 km from Mutarazi on the map.

Victoria Falls is a tour. The eastern waterfalls are a drive, a fee and a walk.

Beyond the falls: Hwange and the safari packages

Hwange National Park, shown in the photo, is about 170 km south-east of Victoria Falls by road. It is a safari and not a waterfall, and the packages on this site that combine the falls with Chobe or Hwange sit on their own safari packages page.

There are 20 of them, typically priced above 1,000 EUR, and 85% last more than a day; the median is 4 days and the range 2 to 6. Reviews are thin: 149 across all 20 listings, against 4,254 for the helicopter flights.

When to go

When the eastern falls run

Victoria Falls has no row because the sources we read disagree on its months.

Mutarazi from the Zimbabwe field guide, which gives no flow data for the dry months.

For Victoria Falls, the sources we read disagree on which months are best, so ask the operator about the water on your dates. For the eastern falls, aim for the weeks after the rains; nobody we found publishes flow data for Mutarazi, so for the dry months we do not know.

Questions about waterfalls in Zimbabwe

What are the best waterfalls in Zimbabwe?

Victoria Falls is the only one with a tour market: 91 listings, typically 60 to 120 EUR, 4.86 on 6,159 reviews. For height, Mutarazi Falls in the Eastern Highlands is quoted at 480 to 770 m depending on the source, and Pungwe Falls drops 240 m into its gorge nearby. Plan Victoria Falls as a tour and the eastern falls as a drive.

Is Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or Zambia?

Both. The Zambezi forms the border and the falls straddle it, with Victoria Falls National Park on the Zimbabwe bank and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambian one. We file the page under Zimbabwe and the menu also lists it under Zambia. A day on both banks needs a border crossing on the bridge and, for many travelers, the KAZA UniVisa.

What is the tallest waterfall in Zimbabwe?

Mutarazi Falls, in the Eastern Highlands, is given as 762 m in the Zimbabwe field guide, 772 m on Wikipedia and 479 m in the World Waterfall Database, which marks its figure unconfirmed. Even at the low end it is the tallest in the country. Victoria Falls is much lower, 108 m at its deepest point according to UNESCO, but 1,708 m wide.

Can you visit Mutarazi Falls on a tour?

Not on this site: no Mutarazi tour turned up in the catalogs we searched. The Zimbabwe field guide describes a car park, a 600 m walk to the escarpment edge and an entrance fee that also covers Pungwe Falls. Check the road and the fee with ZPWMA before you drive.

When is Victoria Falls dry?

It never stops. Wikipedia says that from September to January up to half of the rocky face may become dry, and that in 2019, after unusually low rain, the falls ran at their lowest in a century.

Planning the falls themselves?

The Victoria Falls page sets the two banks, the months and the five tour formats side by side.
