El Yunque Waterfall Tours: What the Slide Days Actually Visit

17 tours, from under 30 to more than 500 EUR. Eight sell a waterslide and hold 82% of the reviews, and at least four stop at Las Tinajas in Ceiba.

Eight of the 17 El Yunque tours sell a waterslide, and they hold 7,261 of the 8,828 reviews, or 82%. They are also the cheap ones, typically 30 to 60 EUR against 60 to 120 EUR for the whole page. What they sell is a river day in the rainforest with a rope swing and a natural slide, and the listings are frank about where it happens: at least four name Las Tinajas or the town of Ceiba, and one says in plain words that its tour does not go into the national forest's protected areas. The forest itself has a free road corridor, a visitor center that charges a small admission and a waterfall trail that is closed. This page separates the three, so that you know which one you are paying for. A slide day and a visit to the national forest are both worth doing, but they are not the same purchase, and the cheaper one is the one with the most reviews.

History matters more here than at most waterfalls, because a hurricane stripped the forest in 2017 and its visitor center stayed closed until 2022. The timeline further down shows what changed and when. For the island as a whole, including caves and the private falls in the west, see waterfalls in Puerto Rico and the Gozalandia and Charco Azul page. The map and the price chart sit lower down, with a table of the three kinds of day and the questions people ask before they book.

What El Yunque National Forest is, and what it is not

El Yunque covers 28,516 acres, about 115 square kilometers, on the east side of the island, and had around 1.2 million visitors in 2023, according to Wikipedia. It is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and most people meet it along the PR-191 corridor. La Coca Falls is a roadside stop at kilometer 8.1, about 85 ft high and for looking only. Juan Diego Falls, about 40 ft, is a short walk away, and access is limited to the lower fall. Swimming has been banned at Baño Grande since 1968. The reservation requirement for the corridor was suspended on 23 August 2023, and the Forest Service's own FAQ says a reservation is not needed to enter. El Portal, the visitor center, charges a small admission fee to visitors 16 and over. An extra per-person fee was proposed in June 2026; as of 22 October 2026 no decision had been published.

The waterfalls the Forest Service runs are free to see from the road. The waterslides are somewhere else.

Aerial view of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with El Morro, the old city and the ocean

From San Juan or from Fajardo

Most El Yunque tours start in San Juan, about 35 km from the forest's east side in a straight line. The east is served from Fajardo, where one listing meets at a pharmacy and drives in convoy to what it calls an exclusive access point, in the 30 to 60 EUR band. The Tiqets listing, in the 60 to 120 EUR band for 7 hours, includes the round trip but not hotel pickup, and ends with a lunch stop in Fajardo at your own cost. Across the page, 41% of the listings include pickup. If you have a car, the free corridor is the only part of this page you can do without anyone.

What the slide days actually visit

Read the itineraries and a pattern appears. The small-group day in the 30 to 60 EUR band, the page's biggest with 3,053 reviews, walks 30 minutes to a mineral-water pool inside the forest's east side, then stops at Las Tinajas in Ceiba. A full-day listing in the same band starts in Ceiba with a 25 to 30 minute hike and a short river trek. Two private listings go to Las Tinajas by name, and a third, in the 120 to 250 EUR band, says its tour keeps outside El Yunque's protected areas. The remote-area listing, in the 60 to 120 EUR band, says outright that it skips the slides. None of this makes a slide day a bad idea. At under 30 EUR, 2,556 reviewers give the cheapest one 4.8. It makes it a different product from a visit to the forest the Forest Service manages. If you want that, use the corridor. If you want to slide on wet rock, book the slide day. Do not pay for one while expecting the other.

The 17 tours sorted by what they sell, with approximate price bands
Kind of day Tours Price band Reviews Typical length
Waterslide days830 to 60 EUR7,2614 hours
Other shared hikes and transport tours560 to 120 EUR1,4056 hours
Private days that are not slide days4120 to 250 EUR1625 hours

The private row deserves a second look. The same operator sells a private group hike to Las Tinajas for 120 to 250 EUR per person and a private Las Tinajas day for more than 500 EUR for the whole group, capped at 6 travelers. At full strength that comes to less per person than the hike, though both land in the 120 to 250 EUR band. They run 5.5 and 5 hours. Compare them for your own party size.

What is in the price

The small-group day in the 30 to 60 EUR band includes a professional guide, certified life jackets, an air-conditioned vehicle and pickup at the door, for groups of up to 13, with guiding in English and Spanish. It asks for a moderate level of fitness and does not take infants under two. The Tiqets day, in the 60 to 120 EUR band, includes a live guide, a life jacket and the round trip, and promises two waterfalls, rope swings, natural slides and optional cliff jumps; food is yours. The cheapest listing, under 30 EUR, includes photos, videos and a bottle of water. The pattern is simple. Below about 60 EUR you buy a guide and a river. Higher up the scale you are buying privacy, a longer day or a remote route that skips the slides, and the listings say which.

What it costs

Chart of the prices of the 17 El Yunque Waterfall Tours listings on waterfalls.travel, median 63.4 EUR
The dot is the median price of the 17 tours and the bar spans the middle half of the listings. Prices are per person, private tours included. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The bar runs from roughly 30 to 120 EUR, with the median in the 60 to 120 EUR band. The floor is under 30 EUR, a four-hour slide day with photos, videos and water included. The ceiling is more than 500 EUR for a private day. A beach-buggy ride along Piñones plus El Yunque, private, sits in the 120 to 250 EUR band. One listing offers pickup in San Juan, Carolina, Río Grande and Luquillo, and it lists El Yunque entry as both included and not included in the same breath, which is a good reason to message the operator before you go.

Pickups and meeting points

If you sleep in Old San Juan, the question is whether the listing collects you or asks you to find it. The small-group day offers pickup in San Juan, Carolina, Río Grande or Luquillo. The Fajardo listing does not. The Tiqets day excludes hotel pickup and drop-off. A Saturday route on the biggest listing is different from the weekday one and, in the listing's words, steep and muddy, for people in good shape. Read the day of the week as well as the meeting point.

Before you go: closures and rules

Map of El Yunque Waterfall Tours showing the main waterfalls and the towns where tours start
San Juan and Fajardo are where most tours start. The dots are La Coca, Juan Diego and La Mina; the last is closed for repairs. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial; map data Natural Earth, place positions © OpenStreetMap contributors

The La Mina trail and fall are reported closed, with completion expected in summer 2027, and the Big Tree Trail is closed as well. The Forest Service's December 2025 holiday alert closed the corridor on 25 December, 1 January and 6 January; check the alerts page before a holiday trip. Rivers can rise fast after heavy rain, so ask the guide to read the water that day. Listings often warn off people with spinal injuries, heart conditions or a pregnancy. And if a listing's text mentions La Mina, it was written before the closure.

Questions about El Yunque waterfall tours

Do you need a reservation for El Yunque?

Not for the PR-191 corridor: the Forest Service FAQ says no reservation is needed, and the requirement was suspended on 23 August 2023. The El Portal visitor center is separate and charges an admission fee for visitors aged 16 and over. Entry to the corridor is first come, first served, so go early on weekends.

Is La Mina Falls open?

No, as far as we can tell. The trail and the fall are reported closed for repairs, and puertorico.com expects work to finish in summer 2027. Many tour pages were written before the closure, so ask the operator which waterfall you will actually visit.

Are the waterslide tours inside the national forest?

Not necessarily. At least four listings stop at Las Tinajas in Ceiba, and one says its tour stays out of the forest's protected areas. A local operator's guide says the slides on these tours are on private land outside the boundary. Ask where the slides are.

Can you swim at the waterfalls on PR-191?

La Coca Falls is a roadside viewing stop. Juan Diego Falls is a short walk, with access limited to the lower fall. Swimming at Baño Grande has been banned since 1968. According to a local operator's guide, the slide stops on these tours are on private land outside the forest boundary, where the Forest Service has no say.

How much does an El Yunque tour cost?

Typically 60 to 120 EUR across 17 tours, from under 30 EUR for a four-hour slide day to more than 500 EUR for a private full day. The eight slide listings typically cost 30 to 60 EUR. Private tours are priced per person like shared seats; only the private full day above 500 EUR quotes one price for the whole group, so divide that one by your party size.

Looking for caves and canyons?

The Gozalandia and Charco Azul page compares 20 tours, from a cave-tubing day in the 60 to 120 EUR band to a private trip above 500 EUR.
