Waterfalls in Guanacaste: Llanos de Cortés, La Leona and Rincón de la Vieja
60 tours across three very different falls, from under 60 to more than 250 EUR. Typical prices run from the 60 to 120 EUR band for a guided river hike to the 120 to 250 EUR band for a day with sloths and coffee.
Guanacaste has three waterfalls that sell, and they share little beyond the province. The cheapest guided way to see one is a three-hour river hike to La Leona, typically in the 60 to 120 EUR band. The dearest is a six-hour day of Llanos de Cortés, sloths and a chocolate farm, in the 120 to 250 EUR band. Between them sits a volcano park, Rincón de la Vieja, with a waterfall, hot springs and lunch, in the same band. This page covers waterfalls in Guanacaste as a place: who runs each one, which rules apply, when the water and the weather cooperate, and which base puts you closest. The 60 tours are read one by one on the three pages linked below, and every price here is a band around the median of the 20 listings read for that fall on 22 October 2026.
The fall pages read the tours one at a time. This page answers the questions that come before them: where to sleep, which month, and which of the three suits a family, a hiker or a hot-spring day. Looking for Río Celeste? It lies inside Volcán Tenorio National Park, about 1.5 hours from Liberia airport, and has its own page. The Costa Rica page sets the whole country side by side, so the national comparison is not repeated here. If you only have one day in the province, start with the three fall pages linked below, and book the one whose operator says plainly what the day includes.

Waterfalls in Guanacaste: three falls, three kinds of rule
Nobody sells Guanacaste as a waterfall system, because it is not one. Llanos de Cortés is a town-council site in Bagaces with a concrete stair and lifeguards. La Leona is a river canyon near Curubandé that every listing we opened treats as a guided trip, with a cave swim at the end. Rincón de la Vieja is a national park on an active volcano, and its rules come from the monitoring agency, not from the tour desk.
One province, three owners: a town council, a handful of private guides and the national park system.
Dry forest first, rain later
Guanacaste is the driest part of Costa Rica. Tourism guides put the dry season at December to April and the green season at May to November; we did not find the national weather service's own cut-off dates. In the dry months the falls carry less water and the grass beside the trail goes the color in the photo. In the green months they carry more, and the guides say mornings stay dry while the rain comes after 2 pm.
One driving guide for the Pacific side calls September and October the heaviest rain of the year.
Llanos de Cortés: the easy swim, inside a long day
Llanos de Cortés (Cataratas Llanos de Cortés) sits off the Pan-American Highway at Bagaces, about 36 km and 35 minutes from Liberia, on land run by the Bagaces municipality. From the parking lot it is about 30 concrete steps and three to five minutes. There is no official height: a March 2026 driving guide says 28 m, a 2016 local article said 19 to 21 m, and one tour listing says 65 ft. The guide describes a roped swimming area with lifeguards. It reports 4,000 colones for adults, cash only, and says storms close the site from September to November.
The catch is what a tour wraps around it. The fall itself is about an hour, and the listings we opened include the ticket. The 20 listings on the Llanos de Cortés page are full days of 5 to 10 hours, 95% with lunch, and the waterfall shares the day with sloths, a coffee farm and a chocolate tour. On the biggest listing those stops are in Bijagua de Upala. If swimming is the point, that ratio is wrong. If it is a day with children, it is right.
La Leona: wet shoes and no shortcuts
La Leona is a different animal. The trailhead is in Curubandé, about 20 minutes north of Liberia according to the operators, and the trail follows the Río Blanco, which comes down from the Rincón de la Vieja volcano. Every listing we opened is guided. On one of them a 4WD takes you about a kilometer to the start; the trail is roughly 2 km each way (2.7 km on another operator's count), through forest, along rock walls, over small ladders and across streams, and finally a swim of about 25 meters with a rope into the cave where the fall lands. We found no source we trust for the height, so this page does not give one.
You swim the last 25 meters with your shoes on.
Shoes matter more than anything else you pack. One operator requires water or tennis shoes and refuses sandals; another turns away anyone without closed-toe sneakers or hiking shoes. The standard hike asks for at least moderate fitness and sits in the 30 to 60 EUR band for about three hours, and one operator takes children from 8; eight of the 20 listings sit in that same band. Everything above that is transport, lunch, tubing or cliff jumping; the La Leona page sorts it out.
Where the three falls sit
The map puts Liberia in the middle. La Leona is about 20 minutes north of it, Rincón de la Vieja park about 25 km out (the figure is Hacienda Guachipelín's), Llanos de Cortés 36 km and 35 minutes the other way, and Miravalles on the far side of the volcano, an hour from Liberia according to a local listing. Beach bases are the other choice, and most departures start there: across the 104 Guanacaste products Viator listed in an earlier read, Playa Flamingo had 29 departures, Hermosa 25 and Tamarindo 17.
One La Leona listing from Playa Flamingo quotes about 90 minutes from the hotel.
Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles: read the alert first
Rincón de la Vieja National Park was created on 23 October 1973 and belongs to the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, a UNESCO site. The volcano monitoring agency Ovsicori raised it to alert level 3 on a four-step scale in early August 2026, and the press reported on 23 August that the summit trail has been closed for years and stays closed. The park normally opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays, and entry tickets must be reserved online through SINAC before you arrive. That was the position on 23 August; we could not read a later bulletin.
Tours reach the water two ways. Hacienda Guachipelín takes you to the Oropendola fall by vehicle and on to hot springs: its combo is in the 60 to 120 EUR band for five hours with lunch, and the park fee is listed as not included. On the Miravalles side, two trips cost 30 to 60 EUR for two and four and a half hours: a 3 km trail with a suspension bridge and two falls, and a 9 km trail with three viewpoints, the bridge and one hidden waterfall. Both live on the Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles page.
What an alert changes about your day
The photo shows a normal day in the park: a rocky path through scrub and dark boulders. Ask the operator which trail the day uses, whether it is open on your date, and what happens to your money if it is not. Most listings we opened offer free cancellation up to 24 hours out; one is final-sale.

In early August Ovsicori raised the volcano from level 2 to level 3. The summit trail stays closed.
| Fall | Who runs it | How you visit | Typical price band | Median length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Llanos de Cortés | Bagaces municipality | About 30 steps down; usually one stop in a sloth-and-coffee day | 120 to 250 EUR | 6 hours |
| La Leona | Private guides at Curubandé | Guided river hike, 2 km each way, rope swim into a cave | 60 to 120 EUR | 4 hours (3 for the plain hike) |
| Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles | The national park, or private trails at Miravalles | Park hike or hacienda, usually with hot springs and lunch | 120 to 250 EUR | 7 hours |
What the 60 tours cost
The chart shows how far apart the three sit: La Leona in the 60 to 120 EUR band, Rincón and Miravalles and Llanos de Cortés a band higher, at 120 to 250 EUR. La Leona's bar starts in the 30 to 60 EUR band, the price of the plain hike; Llanos costs more because it is a lunch day. Across all 60 listings the range runs from under 60 to more than 250 EUR.
Watch the mix, not the unit. 57% of the 60 listings are private, and all 34 of them are priced per person, like shared seats; none quotes one price for the whole group. The one private Llanos listing we opened, priced above 250 EUR, requires two adults and has a child rate. Multiply by the size of your party, and compare it with a shared seat on the same route.

How to choose
Start with what you want to get wet in. A pool under a fall after a short walk is Llanos de Cortés, and the sloths come with it. Ladders and a cave swim are La Leona, and the shoes are not optional. A volcano with hot springs is Rincón de la Vieja, and the alert question comes before the payment.
Thirty-eight operators sell the 60 tours and the reviews are lopsided: Pure Nature Private Tours holds 25% of the 4,344. One listing stitches Llanos de Cortés to Río Celeste in a day: more than 250 EUR, six hours, no refund. Six hours is mostly driving, so ask how long each stop lasts.

Questions about waterfalls in Guanacaste
Which waterfall in Guanacaste is worth the trip?
Llanos de Cortés is the easiest swim, 30 steps from the lot. La Leona is a guided river hike with a rope swim into a cave. Rincón de la Vieja is a volcano park with hot springs. Pick by effort and by how much of the day you want to spend driving.
Can I visit Guanacaste waterfalls without a tour?
Llanos de Cortés, yes: it has a municipal entrance and a cash fee. We found no independent route to La Leona, and every listing we opened is guided. Rincón de la Vieja needs a ticket reserved online through SINAC.
Is Rincón de la Vieja open to visitors?
We cannot give you a current status. On 23 August 2026 the volcano was at alert level 3 and the summit trail was closed. Check SINAC and ask your operator which trail the day uses before you book.
When is the best time for waterfalls in Guanacaste?
The dry season, December to April, keeps roads and trails open, though the falls carry less water. The green season, May to November, adds flow and afternoon rain. September to November is the risky stretch, and Llanos de Cortés can close for storms.
Weighing Río Celeste against these?
Tenorio is 1.5 hours from Liberia airport, and its river is only sometimes blue.
