Where to See Waterfalls: Destinations by Trip Type

There is no best waterfall to rank, only a trip you want to take. Start with the format, check what the site lets you do, then pick from 21 countries on this site.

We do not rank waterfalls, and the numbers show why. Angel Falls is 979 m by one count and 807 m by another, and the World Waterfall Database puts it 14th by overall height (our records guide has the metric behind each figure). What a source can tell you reliably is what a place lets you do: if you may swim, how long the walk is, if the walkway closes when the river rises, and if a ticket carries a time slot. This page sorts the places on this site by those questions and by the kind of day you want. It sends you to the guides that read each operator's own pages.

We earn a commission when you book a tour through the links on this site, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we write: this page also says when a tour is not worth buying. How we are paid is explained in our Editorial Policy. If you have not chosen a place yet, the cards below lead to our pages for 21 countries, and how to read a tour listing is the guide to open once you have a listing in front of you.

How do you choose between 21 countries?

Start with the format, not the country. A waterfall day is usually a day trip from a city with the waterfall as one stop, or a boat ride, a tunnel, a descent, a flight, a quad ride or a night view, and our formats guide sorts the listings in our catalog into twelve of them. Then see what the site itself publishes. In our fit guide we compared eight operators' pages on swimming, walking and steps. All eight state a walking distance. Four mention steps. Only two state a swimming rule. Whatever the country, the answer to "can I swim" has to come from the operator, and the swimming guide shows what those pages look like when they exist. Last, check whether the waterfall is shared by two countries, because the two banks have different operators who publish different things.

Each card opens a country page, which lists its destinations, and from there the tour pages. Within each group the cards follow the order of the site's menu. That order is not a ranking of waterfalls.

Which waterfalls do two countries share?

Three of the waterfalls in our catalog sit on a border: Iguazú between Argentina and Brazil, Victoria Falls between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and Niagara between Canada and the United States. Each bank has its own operator and its own pages. In Which Side? we read them, and none of the operators says its bank is better. They also do not publish water the same way. The Zambezi River Authority gives cubic meters per second for Victoria Falls, the Brazilian concessionaire at Iguazú gives liters per second, and the flow over Niagara is governed by a 1950 treaty that sets minimums, which its own guide explains. Compare a figure only after you have checked its unit. Tours by bank are on our pages for Niagara Falls, Iguazú Falls and Victoria Falls.

Which format fits which place?

A waterfall day is rarely only the waterfall. Our formats guide sorted the 1,276 tours in our catalog on October 22, 2026 into twelve formats by what their titles name. The table matches some of those formats to pages in our catalog, and its last column is the line the guide says to read first in that kind of listing. It describes our catalog, not the market. Read it as a map.

Which places come with a rule that can change your plan?

Some of the rules that matter most are not about the water. Plitvice Lakes prohibits swimming and sells an online ticket valid only within the time period you choose. Krka allows swimming only in three marked places, from 1 June to 30 September, and its page for Skradinski buk says swimming there is not allowed. Both are laid out page by page in Krka or Plitvice?. Reservation systems decide the rest. Guided Tour or On Your Own? reads Havasupai, where every visit needs a booking, Hāʻena State Park, which asks for a reservation unless you hold accepted Hawaii identification, Multnomah Falls, with a summer timed-use permit to park at the I-84 Exit 31 lot, and Iguazú on the Argentine side, where the park asks you to keep to the time chosen on your ticket. We read those pages on 2026-10-27. Check the official site before you go.

Pick the waterfall after you have found the rule that could stop you, not before.

Water sets the other rules, and they last days, not seasons. In If the Waterfall Is Closed or Dry the walkway closures we found ran from a day to a few weeks. The Brazilian concessionaire at Iguazú publishes river-level numbers for closing and reopening its walkway. The Argentine pages we read give none, which is a gap in what is published and not proof that no rule exists. At Niagara, a treaty and not a season sets the minimum flow over the falls, and no source we read says the falls are switched off at night.

Why are the record holders not on a card?

Because we have no tour page for them. Our records guide covers the numbers for Angel Falls and the other holders by height, width and flow, and three of the waterfalls in it, Victoria Falls, Niagara and Iguazú, are in our catalog. The record holders are not. If you came here for one of them, the guide tells you what each figure counts and which list it comes from, and our guide to how waterfalls form explains why large falls are built so differently from one another. A country card is a place where we list tours, and nothing more.

Which waterfalls are easiest to compare on paper?

The ones whose operators publish the same facts. Distance is one. The fit guide found a stated walking distance for all eight sites it read, from 1.5 km round trip to the Dettifoss viewpoint, on the Vatnajökull National Park page, to programs of several hours at Plitvice. Everything else is patchy, with steps mentioned for four sites and a swimming rule for two. If you are weighing the tufa falls, Plitvice and Krka in Croatia and Dunn's River in Jamaica, the useful comparison is not height but family: tufa barriers grow instead of retreating, and each place writes its own rules for them, as the tufa guide shows. If you are choosing a bank at Iguazú, Victoria or Niagara, the banks guide is the comparison, and Which Waterfall Is Right for You? holds the rest of the table.

Quick answers

Why are Argentina and Zambia not in the list of countries?

Our tour pages for Iguazú and Victoria Falls sit under Brazil and Zimbabwe, and the site menu lists each fall under both of its countries. The Argentine and Zambian banks have their own pages: Iguazú Falls Argentine side and Victoria Falls from Livingstone, Zambia side.

Is there a best waterfall to visit?

No source we read ranks waterfalls by one measure a traveler could use. Even height splits: Guinness gives Angel Falls 979 m in total and 807 m for its longest single drop. The records guide shows how each list counts.

Does this page tell me which tour to buy?

No. It sorts places and formats and sends you to guides that read operators' pages. A listing's own stop list, inclusions and cancellation line decide whether a tour fits.
