Damajagua Falls Tours: Choosing Between 7, 12 and 27 Charcos
20 tours, roughly 30 to 120 EUR. Fourteen offer pickup at the Amber Cove or Taino Bay cruise ports, and on 22 October 2026 one listing said the upper waterfalls were closed for lack of rain.
Twelve of the 20 Damajagua falls tours have 7 waterfalls in the title, two have 12 and none says 27, although two were sold as 27 Charcos tours. The listings tell a more careful story. One of those two describes a walk of about 35 minutes to waterfall number 7, then slides and jumps back down. Another listing said outright, on 22 October 2026, that the upper waterfalls were closed for lack of rain and that it ran the first seven. Two tours go to 12: a 7-hour day with hotel pickup and a 4-hour Amber Cove shore excursion that says twelve falls suit passengers with limited time in port, both in the 60 to 120 EUR band. This page explains what the numbers mean, what a cruise-port half day costs (typically 30 to 60 EUR) and what it includes, so that you can pick the day and not the number. We read the itineraries, inclusions and "good to know" lists of the listings, and not just their titles, because in this canyon the number in the title is the least reliable thing on the page. For the country's other waterfalls, see waterfalls in the Dominican Republic.
Damajagua is a protected natural area of 27 limestone pools in the mountains behind Puerto Plata, and the canyon received 120,000 visitors in 2019, according to Dominican Today. The tours are cheap, short and mostly built around a ship's time ashore. If you are on a cruise, read the logistics section first. If you are not, look for the listing with hotel pickup. A word on what this page does not do: it does not quote the park's entry fee, which the listings fold into the price and which we could not confirm from an official source, and it does not cover the country's other falls, which have their own page.

What the Damajagua Falls are
The canyon is a string of pools and chutes cut into limestone by the Damajagua river, in the Cordillera Septentrional. The 12-waterfall listing describes tunnels and chutes, some up to 13 feet, and names two of the falls, La Virgen and La Tinajita. A visit follows one rule on every listing we read: you climb up on foot, along a forest path, and come back down through the water by sliding, jumping or swimming, in a helmet and a life jacket. The listings call it a natural monument within the country's protected areas. In a straight line, the canyon is about 12 km from the Amber Cove meeting point, about 14 km from the Taino Bay pier and about 15 km from Puerto Plata.
Fourteen listings are built around a ship
Fourteen of the 20 listings offer pickup at Amber Cove or Taino Bay, or call themselves shore excursions. Amber Cove opened in 2015, and Taino Bay on 15 December 2021. The two are about seven miles apart. The listings are specific about the logistics. Amber Cove passengers walk about 7 minutes to the highway and turn left for 2 more to meet the guide. Taino Bay passengers find the guide at the gate to the parking lot. Some listings ask you to disembark promptly, and those that mention it promise to return you before the ship sails. The cruise-port half day is the standard product here: about 4 hours, lunch, helmet and life jacket, shared with other ships' passengers.
Seven, twelve or 27
| Name on the listing | Listings | What the listing itself says | Length and price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 waterfalls | 12 | A walk of 25 to 40 minutes up to waterfall 7, then slides, jumps and swims back down; lunch, helmet and life jacket | 3 to 5 hours, roughly 30 to 120 EUR, typically 30 to 60 EUR |
| 12 waterfalls | 2 | 12 of the 27. One is a 7-hour day by safari-style truck with hotel pickup, no pickup from the cruise port and minimum age 8; the other is a 4-hour Amber Cove shore excursion with minimum age 10 and a high fitness level | 4 to 7 hours, 60 to 120 EUR |
| 27 waterfalls | 0 | No listing has 27 in its title, but two were sold as 27 Charcos tours (both in the 30 to 60 EUR band). One walks to waterfall 7 and back; a separate listing said on 22 October 2026 that the other waterfalls were closed for lack of rain | 4 to 5 hours, 30 to 60 EUR |
The pattern is that 27 Charcos is the name of the place, and seven is the name of the tour. A listing that promises 27 may or may not be able to deliver it on the day, because the number open depends on the water level. The listing that says so is the honest one.
27 Charcos is the name of the place. Seven is the name of the tour.
What a half day under 60 EUR includes
The cheapest listing, in the 30 to 60 EUR band for 4 hours, includes the admission, a buffet lunch of rice, beans, fried chicken, grilled pork and salad, water, a soft drink, coffee, hot chocolate, a shot of mamajuana on the bus, helmet, life jacket and round-trip transport from the cruise terminal. The excursion is shared, groups of up to 15. It does not include tips, photos and videos (you buy a package with cash), alcohol or water shoes. Another listing, in the same band, includes the park entrance, lunch, drinks and a helmet; it sets a minimum age of 7 and a maximum weight of 320 pounds, and takes up to 30 travelers per booking. Both are good value if the day is a shore excursion; both are tight if the walk starts late.
| Listing | Price band | Length | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damajagua The 7 waterfalls excursion, from the ports | 30 to 60 EUR | 4 hours | Buffet lunch, entry, helmet, life jacket, a mamajuana shot |
| 5 Zip Lines and 7 Waterfalls, with local food | 60 to 120 EUR | 3 hours | Ziplines on top of the falls |
| Damajagua Waterfalls and Monkey Experience | 60 to 120 EUR | 4.5 hours | A monkey home, watched from a distance, and a tasting of chocolate, coffee and mamajuana |
| 7 Waterfalls and Dune Buggy | 60 to 120 EUR | 5 hours | A dune-buggy ride |
| Damajagua Waterfalls Adventure from Puerto Plata | 60 to 120 EUR | 7 hours | 12 waterfalls, hotel pickup, lunch |
Half of the listings sit between roughly 30 and 120 EUR, with the median in the 30 to 60 EUR band. The 7-waterfall listings run across both bands, and the top of the range is the add-ons: a zipline day, a second zipline day and the dune-buggy day, all in the 60 to 120 EUR band. The top operator holds 16% of this page's 3,907 reviews. Only two listings are private, both in the 30 to 60 EUR band, so privacy is not what drives the price here; the extras are.

What to wear and who should skip it
The listings agree on the basics: old running shoes or water shoes, swimwear, a towel, and for women shorts over the swimsuit on one listing. Waterproof cameras only. Water shoes are not included on the cheapest day, so bring them. Fitness is described in different ways: one listing asks for a high level, two for a moderate one. The age limit is 7 on one listing, 8 on two and 10 on another, and children aged 8 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult on the one that says so. All of them advise against the trip for people with spinal injuries, heart conditions or pregnancy.
In a straight line, Puerto Plata is about 15 km from the canyon, Sosúa 17 km from Puerto Plata and Cabarete 29. Amber Cove, in Maimón, is the closest port, at about 12 km; the Taino Bay pier in Puerto Plata is about 14. A listing that starts in Cabarete adds an hour you do not see on the price tag.
Choosing between a cruise day and a hotel day
The 12-waterfall day costs 60 to 120 EUR for 7 hours and collects from hotels; the cruise day starts under 60 EUR, typically 30 to 60 EUR, for about 4 hours from the pier. If you are staying on the coast, the longer day is the better walk: the 7-hour day goes beyond the seventh pool, and nobody is watching the clock for a ship. If you are in port, the shorter one is the right size. The listing with hotel pickup says that pickup is not available from the cruise port, so check the box before you book.
Questions about Damajagua Falls tours
Is Damajagua worth it from Amber Cove?
If you want to slide and jump, yes. The cheapest 7-waterfall cruise days cost 30 to 60 EUR for about 4 hours with lunch, and some promise to bring you back before the ship sails. The walk up to the seventh pool takes 25 to 40 minutes depending on the listing, and the way down is by sliding and jumping, so leave the ship promptly and do not book a late departure.
How many waterfalls are in the 27 Charcos?
27 pools in total. Most tours climb to the seventh and slide back, two go to twelve, and on 22 October 2026 one listing said the others were closed for lack of rain. If it matters to you, ask which number the guide will actually do on the day.
What is the minimum age?
It runs from 7 to 10 depending on the listing (7 on one, 8 on two, 10 on a 12-waterfall shore excursion), and other sources quote 6 and 11. Children aged 8 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult on one listing. Read the age line of the exact listing you book, because the operators set their own.
Can I go without a cruise?
Yes. The 12-waterfall listing includes hotel pickup and lunch, costs 60 to 120 EUR for 7 hours, and says that pickup from the cruise port is not available. Two cruise listings also say they collect hotel guests.
What should I bring?
Old running shoes or water shoes, swimwear, a towel and cash for photos and tips. The listings say alcohol and water shoes are not included on the cheapest day. Leave valuables on the bus, where the listing says a bag can be left.
Is it safe?
Helmet and life jacket are included on every listing we read, and the guides go with you. The slides and jumps reach about 13 feet, per one listing. Several listings advise against the trip for people with spinal injuries, heart conditions or pregnancy.
Comparing with the rest of the country?
