Wadi Shab Tours from Muscat: Prices, the Boat and the Swim to the Cave
20 tours read one by one: group seats roughly 30 to 120 EUR, private days 120 to 250 EUR. The boat across is 1 OMR on the listing that names it.
A seat on a group tour to Wadi Shab from Muscat costs 60 to 120 EUR on most listings, and a private tour 120 to 250 EUR per person. Below both sits a three-hour listing at 30 to 60 EUR that deserves a second look before you book it. The day is about 8 hours, roughly half of it in a vehicle: Muscat is 140 to 170 km from the wadi, 1.5 to 2 hours each way by the listings, for a 40 to 45 minute walk in and a swim to a waterfall inside a cave. Most of the 20 listings add the Bimmah Sinkhole. This page covers what the boat, lunch and sinkhole add, how the listings differ, what the law says and when the wadi is unsafe. For the other waterfalls of Oman and the best months, see the Oman page.
Wadi Shab is a canyon in the Sharqiyah South region, near the village of Tiwi on the coast road south-east of Muscat. It has been an official tourist area since 2023. The tours below nearly all start in Muscat, drive the coast road, and add a swim at the Bimmah Sinkhole on the way back. Seventeen operators sell them, and one of them, GidOman, holds 35% of the reviews on this page. The tours run all year, but the water does not: the official season runs from September to May, so choose the day before you compare prices.

What Wadi Shab is, and what the law says
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism declared Wadi Shab a tourist area by ministerial decision no. 1152/2/251/2023, covering the wilayat of Sur. The Oman Observer reported it on 23 October 2023. Walking, swimming and climbing are the permitted activities, and the boat that crosses the stream depends on the water level and is run by local residents. The article gives no tariff and no rules of conduct. The official tourism site adds that you need basic swimming ability to reach the hidden waterfall, that a life jacket is optional but recommended, and that September to May is the best time. Neither source mentions a guide.
Wadi Shab lies 140 to 170 km from Muscat: 140 km in the Oman Observer report, 170 km from the airport on the official site. Tiwi is about 40 km from Sur by the map scale, and the Bimmah Sinkhole is on the coast road in between. Almost every tour we read starts in Muscat. Sur is the other base, and the full-day private listing mentions its dhow yard.

Adventure park agreement
OMRAN signed an agreement for a zipline, a via ferrata, diving platforms, suspension bridges, restaurants and children's swim areas along about 3,000 m of the wadi. No dates or tariffs were given.
As far as we could find on 22 October 2026, nothing has changed on the ground: no report of works and no ticket office. The 2024 notice has expired. The 2025 agreement is the reason this page does not promise that the wadi is free and will stay so.
The walk and the swim
From the parking lot to the cave
Tours park at the wadi, cross the stream by boat and walk. The listings that give a time say 40 to 45 minutes each way to the pools, and the Civitatis coach tour allows three hours of free time at the wadi. Near the end part of the route runs through water, so shoes that can get wet matter. The last stretch is a swim into the cave where the fall is. Guides disagree on how long that swim is, so we give no figure.
The GidOman listing, the most reviewed, does not take children under 7. The others are silent, so ask before you bring a small child.
Bimmah Sinkhole and Fins Beach, the usual add-ons
A collapsed limestone pool beside the sea
Most of the 20 listings include the Bimmah Sinkhole, usually as the stop on the drive back. A listing gives it as about 50 by 70 m and 20 m deep, roughly 600 m from the sea, in a park with a stairway down to the water. Locals call it Hawiyat Najm, the falling star, and tell of a meteorite. The scientific account is that the surface collapsed as limestone dissolved. You can swim there.
Several listings add Fins Beach, a white sand stop for photos, and the full-day private listing mentions the ruins of Qalhat and a dhow yard in Sur. Check whether the sinkhole is in your price: the Wadi Shab only option on the GidOman listing leaves it and lunch out.
Reading the 20 listings
The group listings sit at roughly 30 to 120 EUR, typically 60 to 120. Eleven private day listings run at 120 to 250 EUR. Two do not fit: a 10-hour private day at 250 to 500 EUR that adds Wadi Tiwi, Qalhat and the dhow yard for up to four travelers, and a two-day trip in the same 250 to 500 EUR band with a night in Tiwi, three meals, a fishing trip and the boat fee. One listing is plotted as private in the 60 to 120 EUR band, but the listing is internally inconsistent about being a group or a private tour.
The most reviewed listing is also among the cheapest: GidOman's group day in the 60 to 120 EUR band, 9 hours with lunch, 4.9 on 443 reviews. We would start there. At the other end the Civitatis coach tour costs the same band and scores 3.9 on 23 reviews, the lowest on the page, though it is the one that gives you three hours at the wadi.
What six listings put in the price
| Listing | Price band | Hours | Starts at | Lunch | Boat across |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GidOman, group, with Bimmah Sinkhole | 60 to 120 EUR | 9 | Muscat hotel or meeting point, or the wadi parking lot | Included, except in Ramadan | Not stated |
| Wadi Shab Sharing Tour, group, with Fins Beach | 60 to 120 EUR | 8.2 | Muscat hotels | 5 OMR extra | 1 OMR extra |
| Civitatis, by coach, with Fins Beach and sinkhole | 60 to 120 EUR | 8 | Muscat hotels | Included, at the Wadi Shab Resort | Not stated |
| Yousuf Almaqbali, from Muscat | 30 to 60 EUR | 3 | Tiwi, despite the title | Not included | Not stated |
| VS Private Tours, with Wadi Tiwi and Qalhat | 250 to 500 EUR | 10 | Not stated | Included | Fee included |
| Two brothers adventures, two days with a night in Tiwi | 250 to 500 EUR | 48 | Muscat | Lunch, dinner and breakfast included | Fee included |
The three-hour listing is the one to read twice. It says from Muscat in the title, lists Tiwi as its meeting point and includes transport from the hotel and nothing else, in a 3-hour window that cannot hold the drive from Muscat and the walk. Ask the operator what the price covers before you pay.
The boat, the fee and what is free
The boat is the one cost that comes up in all the guides we read. One listing says 1 OMR for it, paid on the spot, and 5 OMR for lunch. A guide dated June 2026 gives 500 baisa each way. The group listing that names the boat leaves it out, and the two listings in the 250 to 500 EUR band include it. Parking at the wadi is free by a travel blog's account. We found no gate fee or ticket office in the ministry's text, and the 2025 agreement could change that.
Budget about 1 OMR for the boat if the price does not name it; sources give 1 OMR or 500 baisa each way.
When to go, and when not to
The official tourism site gives September to May. Guides narrow it to October to April or November to March, and say to avoid July, August and the midday heat. Blogs also advise skipping Friday and Saturday, the Omani weekend. Rain is the other variable: the 2024 notice was about high water, and guides say to cancel if rain is forecast. Every Viator listing we opened allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, and the Civitatis listing does too.

Choosing between listings, and the mistakes to avoid
Decide first where you will be at 8 am. A Muscat hotel pickup, a meeting point and the wadi parking lot are three different prices for the same walk. Then check what the price assumes. The sinkhole, lunch and the boat can each be extra, and the cheapest listings tend to leave the most out. Three mistakes are easy to make: booking the 3-hour listing without asking, going on a Friday or Saturday, and arriving at midday in summer. If you cannot swim, the official guidance is a reason to stop at the pools.
Questions about Wadi Shab tours
Do I need a guide or a tour to visit Wadi Shab?
Nothing we found makes one compulsory. The ministry's 2023 decision lists walking, swimming and climbing as permitted and does not mention guides, and the boat is run by local residents. A tour buys the transport from Muscat, which is most of the day. If you drive yourself, parking is free by a travel blog's account.
Is Wadi Shab safe for non-swimmers?
The official tourism site says you need basic swimming ability to reach the hidden waterfall, and that a life jacket is optional but recommended. If you cannot swim, take that as a reason to stop short of the cave, and ask your operator whether life jackets are supplied.
How long is the hike?
The listings that give a time say 40 to 45 minutes each way to the pools, after a short boat crossing. Blogs range from 40 to 60 minutes a leg. The swim to the cave comes on top, and guides disagree on its length, so allow time rather than a number. The Civitatis tour gives three hours free at the wadi.
How far is Wadi Shab from Muscat?
The Oman Observer gave 140 km in 2023 and the official tourism site gives 170 km from the airport. Tour listings say 1.5 to 2 hours by road each way, which is why a day tour lasts about 8 hours.
Is Wadi Shab closed after rain?
It can be. In October 2024 the ministry asked travelers to stay away until the 31st because of high water and flood damage. That notice has expired and we found no later one. Guides say to skip the day if rain is forecast.
Do I pay for the boat?
Usually yes, on the spot, unless the listing says the fee is included. One listing names 1 OMR and a June 2026 guide gives 500 baisa each way. The two listings in the 250 to 500 EUR band include it. Read the inclusions line for the one you pick.
Comparing Wadi Shab with the rest of Oman?
The Oman page sets it against Wadi Tiwi, Wadi Bani Khalid and the monsoon falls of Dhofar, month by month.
