Waterfalls in Indonesia: where the tours go and where they don't

115 tours from two places, Bali and East Java, from under 30 EUR for a Bali day to more than 250 EUR for four days around Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu.

Waterfalls in Indonesia are sold from just two places: Bali, with 80 tours, most of them in the 30 to 60 EUR band, and East Java, with 35 tours that typically cost 120 to 250 EUR. The gap is mostly arithmetic. Every Bali tour is a day trip of 10.5 hours at most, while 20 of East Java's 35 last two to four days and add volcanoes. Every other fall in the country, from Lombok to North Sumatra, you reach on your own. This page puts them side by side: what each one is, how it is visited, what it costs and which months to avoid. It also says plainly which famous falls we have nothing to sell for, because a comparison that leaves them out would be a flattering one. Prices are in euros as the provider lists them, read on 22 October 2026.

The tours themselves sit on the Bali and East Java pages, which read them one at a time. Here you get the comparison table, the price chart, the map and a season matrix built from the months each source gives for each fall. Read the table first if you are choosing between islands, and the matrix first if your dates are already fixed. Every figure carries its source, and where two sources disagree, we say so rather than average them.

Waterfalls in Indonesia: two clusters with tours, the rest on your own

Ask which Indonesian waterfall is best and you get twenty names across six islands, most of them a day of travel from the next. A list does not help you plan, so this page sorts the falls by what it takes to reach them. Tours run in two clusters. Everything else is on your own, and the table below says so instead of pretending otherwise.

There are so many falls for a plain reason: Indonesia is a chain of volcanic islands, and rain on a steep volcanic slope has to go somewhere. Tumpak Sewu is fed by the Glidik river coming down from the Semeru volcano, and its curtain of falls adds up to about 120 m according to Wikipedia. Tegenungan in Bali sits on the Petanu river. Height tells you little, though. Tumpak Sewu is an amphitheater of falls and Tegenungan is one broad drop with a crowd at the bottom.

Madakaripura Waterfall dropping into a turquoise pool inside a mossy gorge in East Java

East Java

Madakaripura, the one you walk into

Madakaripura is a gorge rather than a viewpoint. Blogs give about 200 m, a figure nobody in our sources has surveyed. A guide's blog from November 2025 describes a 1.2 km walk with 15 to 20 minutes spent in the stream itself, an entry of 53,500 IDR for foreigners, and a compulsory guide at roughly 100,000 IDR per group of up to ten. Those are one blogger's numbers from one month, not a tariff.

Guides put the good months at May to September, and regional operators often bundle it with Mount Bromo. The East Java page covers that side of the country.

Where the tours start

Map of Indonesia showing the main waterfalls and the towns where tours start
Tours start in Bali (Ubud, Seminyak, Kuta) or in East Java (Malang, Surabaya). The falls on Lombok and Sumatra have no tour on this site. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial; map data Natural Earth, place positions © OpenStreetMap contributors

Most of that map is sea, which is the planning problem. Bali and East Java are neighbors, yet their tours do not connect: a Bali driver does not take you to Tumpak Sewu, and the East Java listings start in Malang, Surabaya or Banyuwangi, with pickup offered on all 35. If you want both, treat them as two trips with a ferry or a flight between them, and book each on its own page: Bali and East Java. Lombok's Tiu Kelep is the third dot on the map, and the one with no product here.

How the main waterfalls compare

The falls named on this page, with and without a tour on this site. Heights are given only where a source measured them.
Waterfall Where What to know Tour or on your own
Tumpak SewuLumajang and Malang, East JavaAbout 120 m in total (Wikipedia); the main fall is not a swimming spot; entry is paid in several segments, in cashDay trips and multi-day packages here

Cunca Rami and TengkuleseFloresGuide advised; a bamboo ladder gets slippery at TengkuleseOn your own; no tour here
Curug Cikaso and CimarinjungCiletuh, West JavaOne blog rates April as the best month for colorOn your own; no tour here

The weak column is height: Wikipedia gives Tumpak Sewu a figure, and for most of the others the only numbers come from blogs that disagree. The last four rows are real destinations where we sell nothing.

Choose by days, not by waterfall: Bali is one day, East Java is two or three, everything else is a trip of its own.

Bali: many small falls, one base

Bali holds 80 of the 115 tours and the cheapest ones: typically 30 to 60 EUR, from under 30 to more than 120 EUR. Most of its falls are small drops, 10 to 40 m, on rivers that run off the volcanoes, grouped around Ubud, the highlands, the north coast and the east. The Bali page works through the clusters. Of 473 Bali products we read, 200 mention a waterfall only as a passing stop, and we did not list them.

East Java: volcano country

East Java has 35 tours that typically cost 120 to 250 EUR. Tumpak Sewu is the reason to come: 13 day trips from Malang or Surabaya sit in the 30 to 60 EUR band for about 10 hours. The other 20 tours are multi-day packages, typically 120 to 250 EUR for 72 hours, adding Mount Bromo at dawn and Ijen. Ijen was closed from 4 to 28 September 2026 after fires, according to Indonesian press, and reopened with online-only tickets. A volcano is part of this itinerary and can change it. Details are on the East Java page.

Reading the price chart

Chart of the prices of the 115 Indonesia listings on waterfalls.travel, median 45.3 EUR
Median price and middle half of listings. East Java's 35 tours include 20 multi-day packages; Bali's 80 are all day trips of 10.5 hours or less. · Waterfalls Travel Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

Look at the gap before you look at the falls. Bali's middle half of listings runs from under 30 to 60 EUR, East Java's from roughly 60 to 500 EUR. That is a question of days, not of how good the waterfall is. Compare like with like and the gap shrinks: Tumpak Sewu day trips and the Bali waterfall-tour day both sit in the 30 to 60 EUR band, the Java one slightly dearer. A day in Java costs a small extra, mostly distance: one blog puts the fall about 70 km from Malang.

The review count needs a caveat. A single private tour around Ubud in the 30 to 60 EUR band has 17,699 reviews, 59% of everything on this page, so the 4.97 rating is partly that one listing. In it Tegenungan is the last of six stops.

What the Bali price leaves out

Foreign visitors to the island owe a levy of 150,000 IDR each, introduced on 14 February 2024 under Governor Regulation 36/2023 and paid through the Love Bali platform, according to the provincial government. No tour bills it, and no waterfall gate collects it. Entrance fees at the falls are paid in cash at the gate, and two 2026 blogs give figures for the same fall that differ by as much as 25,000 IDR. Some listings include the tickets and some say they do not, so read the included list before you compare two prices.

Dry-season months as given by Wikipedia and blogs; there is no official calendar. Ijen was closed 4 to 28 September 2026.

The dry season is almost the same everywhere on this page, which makes planning easy. Bali's rains bring brown water and wet steps; August to October has lower flow, but the falls are rarely dry. East Java's risk is more serious: with rain, the descent at Tumpak Sewu is reported closed and the water upstream rises fast. A volcano sits behind the fall, too. In December 2025 Indonesian press reported Semeru at alert level III, with exclusion zones around the crater. We found no closure of the waterfall itself, but the status is worth a look before you book.

Tiu Kelep Waterfall on Lombok, water spreading over mossy rock above a boulder field

No tour here

The falls we do not sell

Four names on the map have no tour on this site, and they are worth knowing anyway. Tiu Kelep on Lombok is a trek in the Rinjani foothills; one-day tours exist from other sellers, but none is in our catalog. Sipiso-piso, at the north end of Lake Toba, is mostly a viewpoint. On Flores a guide is advised for Cunca Rami and Tengkulese, and in West Java the falls near Ciletuh are rated best in April by one blog.

None has a booking page here, so there is no price to compare. We name them so that the choice between Bali and East Java is made with the whole country in view.

Which cluster for how many days

With two days or fewer, pick Bali. Ubud is the base, tours collect you at the hotel, and the lowest listings start under 30 EUR. With four days or more and a taste for volcanoes, pick East Java, but plan it from Malang or Surabaya rather than as an add-on to a Bali stay. Lombok, Flores and Sumatra you organize yourself. Both pages carry their own tables: Bali for the four ways to see its falls, East Java for day trip or package.

Questions about waterfalls in Indonesia

How much does a waterfall tour cost in Indonesia?

Across the 115 listings the typical price is 30 to 60 EUR. Bali tours sit in the 30 to 60 EUR band, with the middle half from under 30 to 60 EUR. East Java typically costs 120 to 250 EUR because 20 of its 35 tours are multi-day. Prices are the provider's listed ones. Private tours are priced per person, like shared seats; only 4 of the 89 private listings quote one price for the whole group, so the booking page still has the final word.

Which Indonesian island has the best waterfalls?

It depends on what you want. Bali offers the most falls within an hour of a base, mostly small drops into pools. East Java has the scale: Tumpak Sewu is about 120 m in total, and Madakaripura is reported at about 200 m. Lombok, Flores and Sumatra take more effort and have no tour here.

Do I need a tour for Tumpak Sewu?

No. Blog guides describe reaching it on your own by bus or with a driver from Malang, about 70 km away, and paying several entry fees in cash. The 13 day trips here, roughly 30 to 60 EUR for about 10 hours, sell the transport and the timing, and all offer pickup.

Can you swim at Indonesian waterfalls?

At some. Banyumala in Bali allows swimming, with water up to chest height according to a 2026 guide; several listings describe a swim at Tibumana, but no site we found confirms it. The main fall at Tumpak Sewu is not, though a pool near Goa Tetes is. Tukad Cepung and Nungnung are poor places for it, and currents at Gitgit grow after rain. Rules change, so ask the operator.

Data verified on . Tour data: 115 listings on 22 Oct 2026. Heights, fees and seasons: Wikipedia, travel blogs and Bali's provincial government, and they vary by source.
