Appleton Estate Rum, Black River Safari and YS Falls from Montego Bay or Negril
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Montego BayThis day trip heads for Jamaica's South Coast, with hotel pickup in Montego Bay or Negril and about two hours on the road to the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience. The driver deals with the narrow, winding mountain roads, a guide talks about the island's history on the way, and rest stops are scheduled along the route. Anyone prone to motion sickness should know the journey can bring it on. One Appleton Estate Triple pass covers all three stops. Appleton is the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica still in continuous production, and it has been making rum since 1749. The visit takes in the distillery and the ageing house, a guided tasting of three premium aged rums, a cocktail, and sugar cane and molasses to try. Photos are allowed everywhere except inside the distillery. Lunch is part of the package and is served at the estate's full-service restaurant and bar. Next comes a boat ride on the Black River, one of the longest rivers on the island, between mangroves and past crocodiles on the banks. Over 100 bird species live here, whistling ducks and egrets among them, and a local guide runs the trip. The last stop is YS Falls: seven waterfalls dropping into natural pools, surrounded by gardens. Some of the rock is rough, so water shoes are recommended. Up to 24 travelers can be booked together, and guiding is in English. The time chosen at checkout is the arrival time, and hotel pickups start roughly 30 to 90 minutes earlier.

The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience
The first stop is the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience. Appleton is the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica that has produced without a break, and its rum has been made by hand since 1749. The visit goes through the distillery and the ageing house, then a guided tasting of three premium aged rums. A cocktail, sugar cane and molasses are on the table too. The gift shop sells Appleton souvenirs. Lunch is a Jamaican meal at the full-service restaurant and bar, which has indoor and outdoor seating.

Black River
A boat runs along the main waterway of the Black River swamp, one of the longest rivers on the island. The river takes its name from its dark bed, stained by thick layers of rotting vegetation. The boat passes tall mangroves and dense greenery, with crocodiles resting on the banks. More than 100 bird species live here, and whistling ducks and egrets are among the sightings to watch for. A local guide narrates the ride.
-
YS Falls
YS Falls sits off the main road on the South Coast. Seven waterfalls spill clear, cool water into natural pools that suit a swim or a photo. The site was once a cane farm with a working factory and opened to visitors as a nature attraction in 1992. Gardens and tall trees surround the falls, and both locals and visitors come here.
