Authentic Adventures Vietnam runs this trip, which joins Ban Gioc, the largest waterfall in Vietnam, to the quieter water of Ba Be Lake. It is sold for groups or as a private trip, for all ages and budgets, and the operator is reachable 24/7. Hotel pickup, meals, transport and a guide are part of the package. The road north from Hanoi begins at 7:00 and runs about three hours toward the Chinese border, through Chi Lang Pass, a gorge 20 km long between two mountains, long tied to victories over Chinese invasions as far back as 981 AD. After a stop at Hoi Que, a visit to Mother's Temple and lunch in Dong Dang, the route reaches Dong Khe, site of the first battle of the Indochina Wars (September and October 1950, a Viet Minh victory). Ban Gioc is reached at 16:30, with an evening visit, dinner and a night in a standard homestay, or in a 3- or 4-star hotel or resort as an upgrade. The next morning covers the falls, where a small boat goes closer, then Nguom Ngao Cave, 2,144 meters long, and Ban Gioc Pagoda. The afternoon moves to Ba Be Lake for a hotel night, a short trek to the Tay villages of Mo and Lom at 16:00 and dinner. The last day starts on the lake by boat, with a swim if wanted, then the Nang River, An Ma Temple and Ao Tien pond, or kayaking. Lunch is at 11:00 and the drive of about 230 km back to Hanoi leaves at 12:00, with a tea plantation stop. Drop-off at the hotel is at 17:00.

  1. Hanoi

7:00: the guide collects guests by car at their hotel for the transfer to Lang Son, about three hours toward the Chinese border. The road goes through Chi Lang Pass, a 20 km gorge cut between two mountains and an important place in Vietnamese history, where invasions from China were beaten many times, as early as 981 AD. It is known as the country's strongest bastion.

  2. Lang Son

9:00: short break at the Hoi Que rest stop. 10:00: Mother's Temple. 11:00: lunch at a local restaurant in Dong Dang. 12:00: the road continues into the pass. 14:00: Dong Khe, where the first battle of the Indochina Wars was fought in September and October 1950, ending in a clear Viet Minh victory. 14:30: onward to Ban Gioc waterfall.

  3. Ban Gioc Waterfall - Detian Falls

16:30: arrival at Ban Gioc, check-in and a short visit to the waterfall. 19:00: dinner and the night. Accommodation is a standard homestay, with an upgrade to a 3 or 4-star hotel or resort available.

  4. Ban Gioc Waterfall - Detian Falls

After breakfast the day goes to the falls. The farming tools made in the village nearby are part of local life, visible in the rice paddies and fields around the waterfall, and there is time to take in the setting and to photograph it. A small boat goes closer to the water. Next is Nguom Ngao Cave, which runs 2,144 meters underground and is full of stalactites and stalagmites, and then Ban Gioc Pagoda, a Buddhist temple in the countryside of northern Cao Bang, close to the falls.

  5. Thac Ba Lake

13:00: the road goes to Ba Be Lake, where the night is in a hotel with a home-cooked meal. 16:00: arrival at the lake and a short trek to Mo and Lom, two Tay villages, to see how local people live. 19:00: dinner and an evening of rest. Highlights of the day: Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave and ethnic villages.

  6. Ba Be

After breakfast a boat sets out on the lake, and guests can relax on board or swim in the cool water. Karst formations covered with patches of wild vegetation rise all around. The boat then continues along the Nang River. Options include An Ma Temple and Ao Tien pond, or kayaking on Ba Be Lake. 11:00: lunch. 12:00: departure for Hanoi, about 230 km away, with a stop at a tea plantation among rolling hills.

  7. Hanoi

17:00: arrival in Hanoi and drop-off at the hotel, which ends the tour.
