A mountain with a hole through its center starts this two-day trip from Hanoi to Ban Gioc. Pickup is early in the morning at a hotel in the Old Quarter, in a Limousine Van or a seven-seat MPV, and the group reaches Cao Bang City between 12:00 and 13:00 for lunch at the homestay with the guide. The first stop is Angel Mountain, ringed by other peaks. At its foot there is a lake from July to October, and a field from November to May. The afternoon continues on the border belt road, where few trucks or containers pass, through Tay, Nung and Dao villages. The night is in a homestay on the Quay Son River, with time to swim, traditional meals and a chance to see the way hosts live. The second day opens with Nguom Ngao Cave (Tiger Cave), still close to its natural state, with stone columns formed over hundreds of millions of years and stalactites shaped like a tiger, a lotus, a boat, a cactus and a jellyfish. Truc Lam Zen Monastery follows, where a climb to the pagoda looks over Ban Gioc, the Chinese glass bridge and the Vietnamese rice fields. At the waterfall, a boat moves close enough for spray, and the border runs through the middle of the river. The route back to Cao Bang uses another road, lunch is at the farmstay, and the Limousine Van leaves at 14:00 for Hanoi.

  1. Hoan Kiem

Early morning pickup by Limousine Van or a seven-seat MPV at a hotel in the Hanoi Old Quarter. Arrival in Cao Bang City around 12:00 to 13:00, followed by lunch at the homestay with the guide.

  2. Mountain God's Eye

Angel Mountain is an unusual peak with a hole through the middle, surrounded by other mountains. A lake fills the ground at its foot from July to October, and a field replaces it from November to May. The quiet and the open air are the draw here.

  3. Cao Bang Province

The route goes on along the border belt, where few trucks or containers pass, through the villages of the Tay, Nung and Dao peoples.

  4. Nguom Ngao Cave

Nguom Ngao Cave (Tiger Cave) has kept its natural state. Its stone columns formed over hundreds of millions of years, and its stalactites take many shapes, among them a tiger, a lotus flower, a boat, a cactus, a jellyfish and a magic stick.

  5. Visit Truc Lam Zen Monastery in Cao Bang

Truc Lam Zen Monastery. A climb to the pagoda gives a wide view of Ban Gioc Waterfall and the mountains, with the Chinese glass bridge on the far side and quiet Vietnamese rice fields on the near side.

  6. Ban Gioc Waterfall - Detian Falls

Ban Gioc Waterfall pours into a river beside a rice field. A boat goes close enough for the spray to reach passengers, and the border between Vietnam and China runs through the middle of the river, nearly 100 km from the start.

  7. Cao Bang

11:00 to 13:00: back to Cao Bang by a different road, with distant mountains and tended fields. 13:00 to 14:00: lunch at the farmstay in Cao Bang city. 14:00 to 14:30: the Limousine Van leaves for Hanoi, arriving about 21:00 to 22:00.
