Ban Gioc Waterfall and Ba Be Lake 3-Day Tour with Nung and Tay Homestays
This is a set-departure trip, leaving on Tuesdays and Fridays, that links two corners of northern Vietnam: the karst hills and lake of Ba Be National Park and the border country of Cao Bang, where Ban Gioc Waterfall falls. The route runs through remote areas close to the Chinese border, and the nights are spent with local families rather than in hotels. Day one heads from Hanoi to Lang Son by minivan (about three hours), with stops at the 16th-century Mac Citadel and at Dong Khe, where the 1950 battle of the First Indochina War was fought. The evening is a home-cooked dinner and a night at a Nung homestay, after a walk of 3 to 5 km through ethnic villages. Day two goes to Trung Khanh and the blacksmithing village of Phuoc Sen, then to Ban Gioc itself, over 300 meters wide and shared between Vietnam and China. Nguom Ngao Cave follows, a cave that runs 2,144 meters underground. The road then crosses a mountain pass to Ba Be Lake and a Tay family homestay. Day three is on the lake: a boat to the north shore, a forest hike to a cave and the An Ma temple, and lunch at Ba Be Jungle Houses. The trip ends with the drive of about 230 km back to Hanoi, with a stop at a tea plantation.

Lang Son
Pickup is by minivan at a hotel in the Hanoi Old Quarter, or at the Mr Linh's Adventures office, around 7:30 to 8:00. A scenic drive of about three hours leads to Lang Son, near the Chinese border. The first visit is Mac Citadel, a 16th-century fortress built by the Mac Dynasty to hold off Le-Trinh forces. Part of it is in ruins, but the stone walls, the military layout and the views over the surrounding area can still be explored.
-
Quang Uyen
Lunch is at a local restaurant in Dong Dang. The afternoon goes to Dong Khe, where the 1950 battle was a major Viet Minh victory over French colonial forces during the First Indochina War, and the site is explored on foot. In the evening the group reaches a traditional Nung homestay for a home-cooked dinner and the night. Highlights of the day: Mac Citadel, the Dong Khe battle site, ethnic villages and a 3 to 5 km walk.
-
Ban Gioc Waterfall - Detian Falls
After breakfast at the homestay, the group drives to Trung Khanh, on the Chinese border, and to Phuoc Sen, a Nung mountain village known for its blacksmiths, whose farming tools are visible in the surrounding paddies and fields. Ban Gioc Waterfall comes next, over 300 meters wide and split evenly between Vietnam and China, with time to look and take photographs. Then Nguom Ngao Cave, which runs 2,144 meters underground and is full of stalactites and stalagmites.
-
Ba Be
The route goes back through Cao Bang town and down the snake pass to Ba Be Lake. The night is in a homestay built in traditional Tay style and run by a Tay family, with a home-cooked meal. Highlights of the day: Ban Gioc waterfall, Nguom Ngao cave, Ba Be National Park and ethnic villages.
-
Ba Be
After breakfast a boat crosses the lake to the north shore, where a hike starts in the rainforest at the center of Ba Be National Park. Along the lake the path reaches a cave said to date back 500 million years, set in an old forest of rare, very hard wood. A little further on, a fire station is used for watching birds.
-
Ba Be National Park
The hike continues to the An Ma temple, a sacred site of the Tay people dedicated to a snake god and a general of the Mac dynasty. Back on the boat there is a choice between sitting back to watch the karst formations and jungle slide by, or swimming in the lake. Guests who skip the walk can ask to stay on the boat, visit Widow Island or shop.
-
Hanoi
Lunch is at the Ba Be Jungle Houses restaurant. Then the group is driven about 230 km back to Hanoi, with a stop at a tea plantation among rolling hills on the way, and the tour ends on arrival in the city.
