Blue Hole, Secret Falls and Dunn's River Falls Full-Day Tour from Montego Bay Hotels (12/12)

This full-day trip runs from Montego Bay hotels up to the Ocho Rios hills and joins three water stops in one route: the Blue Hole, Secret Falls and the terraced limestone cascade of Dunn's River Falls. Admission tickets are included, with skip-the-line passes for faster entry. At the Blue Hole, guests jump into a deep mineral pool, swing from Tarzan ropes and swim under the caves, then walk about five minutes through the woods to Secret Falls. At Dunn's River Falls, a falls guide leads a human chain up roughly 600 feet of rock from the beach, and anyone who would rather stay dry can watch from the terrace or deck. Transport is by air-conditioned vehicle with hotel pickup and drop-off, and a professional guide goes along. On the way the route passes Rose Hall Great House and Greenwood Great House, two plantation homes from the early 18th century, and stops briefly at Columbus Park in Discovery Bay for photos. Lunch is at a popular local jerk chicken eatery and is paid for by the traveler. Gratuities and souvenir photos are extra. Take cash, a waterproof camera, towels, water shoes and swimsuits. Bookings are limited to 15 travelers, and the guide speaks English.

  1. Blue Hole

The drive follows the north coast, with turquoise water along the shore, and climbs into the hills of Ocho Rios to the Blue Hole and Secret Falls. The mineral pool sits inside tropical rain forest. Guests jump from the edge into the deep water, swing on Tarzan ropes or swim in under the caves, then walk about five minutes through the woods to Secret Falls, where the water pours over the rock. Resident photographers work the site, and the Blue Hole guide will also take pictures; a waterproof camera of your own is welcome.

  2. Dunn's River Falls and Park

Guests climb Dunn's River Falls in a human chain led by experienced falls guides. A resident guide walks the group down to the beach where the climb begins. The route from beach to top is about 600 feet (183 meters) and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, with pools along the way for photos and a splash, and a stop at the so-called massage parlour, where water pours down toward the sea. Exit points let anyone step out and rejoin the group at the finish, and the terrace and deck give a dry view of the climbers.

  3. Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall Great House is an early 18th century plantation home on high ground in Rose Hall, Montego Bay. It once belonged to Annie Palmer, a plantation owner who held hundreds of enslaved people, and tales of a haunting have followed the house since her death in 1831. The route does not stop here: the guide tells the history and slows down so guests can take photos.

  4. Greenwood Great House

Greenwood Great House, another plantation home from the early 18th century, was built on high ground like most great houses in Jamaica, a position that gave a view over the estate and helped with security. Unlike Rose Hall, it has no haunting reputation and a calmer feel. The guide slows down while passing so guests can photograph the architecture.

  5. Columbus Park Museum

Columbus Park is in Discovery Bay, first called Puerto Seco (Dry Harbour) after Columbus landed in 1494 and could not find fresh water. Water turned up about 5 miles west, at a place named Rio Bueno (Good River). The town took the name Discovery Bay in 1947. The park displays old relics and artifacts but is temporarily closed for renovations, so the stop is a brief one for photos.

  6. Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is the resort area of the garden parish of St. Ann. The name was long tied to eight rivers, though it more likely comes from Las Choreras, meaning waterfalls. The area has caves, gardens, rivers and white sand beaches, from Fern Gully in an old riverbed to the tiered falls of Dunn's River, the Blue Hole and Secret Falls.

  7. Runaway Bay

The route passes through Runaway Bay, set between the coastline on one side and green mountains on the other. Its name is disputed: one account says the last Spanish soldiers fled from here after the 1655 British invasion, another that enslaved people from inland plantations used it as an escape route to Cuba. Keep a camera ready.
