A full day that splits in two. The morning follows the Columbia River Gorge, an ancient riverbed carved by the last Ice Age, past the Bridge of the Gods and on to Hood River, the Windsurfing Capital of the World. The afternoon turns south through Oregon's fruit valley and climbs to Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, a volcano described as the world's second most summited mountain. The day starts at Director Park in downtown Portland and joins the Historic Columbia River Highway at Troutdale. Vista House at Crown Point comes first, with 180-degree views from 733 feet above the river. Then come Latourell Falls (249 feet, with a short quarter-mile trail in some seasons) and Multnomah Falls (620 feet in two steps). Hood River gets an hour of free time, enough to walk the town and have lunch. After that the route runs south through the Fruit Loop orchards and lavender farms, with a possible short stop at a farm stand if time allows, then through Mount Hood National Forest. The final stop is Timberline Lodge, at roughly 6,000 feet, a National Historic Landmark at the foot of Oregon's highest peak. Guests can explore inside, step onto the patios for Cascade Range views, or, time permitting, walk with the guide to the Pacific Crest Trail crossing behind the lodge. The van returns to Director Park.

  1. 900 SW Taylor St, Portland

  2. Director Park

The meeting point and pickup in the middle of downtown Portland, an urban park.

  3. Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

The van heads east from downtown along the Columbia River to Troutdale, the Gateway to the Gorge, and then joins the Historic Columbia River Highway, the first planned scenic road in the United States.

  4. Vista House

The first stop of the day. The overlook sits 733 feet above the Columbia River on the remains of a lava flow from about 14 to 17 million years ago and gives 180-degree views of the Gorge. The Vista House is an observatory and museum on the National Register of Historic Places.

  5. Latourell Falls

The first waterfall of the day drops 249 feet over a wall of columnar basalt. In some seasons the guide leads a short quarter-mile trail for a closer look.

  6. Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls falls 620 feet in two main steps, Oregon's highest waterfall and the second highest in the country. The 1925 Cascadian-style lodge of stone and timber can be explored, and the viewing platform looks across to Benson Bridge and the cascade beyond.

  7. Hood River

Hood River, the Windsurfing Capital of the World. The group has an hour of free time to walk through town and eat lunch.

After lunch the route heads south through the Fruit Loop orchards and lavender farms. If time allows there is a short stop at a farm stand before the drive into Mount Hood National Forest.

  9. Mount Hood

The road through the national forest gives several views of Mount Hood before the last stop on the mountain, Timberline Lodge.

  10. Timberline Lodge

The road climbs to roughly 6,000 feet and Timberline Lodge, a National Historic Landmark at the base of Mt. Hood, Oregon's highest peak, which draws more than 10,000 climbers each year. Guests can explore inside the lodge and look out over the Cascade Range from the patios. If time allows, the guide leads a short hike to the Pacific Crest Trail crossing behind the lodge.
