Three hours, seven falls and a lot of limestone. The Damajagua River runs along the north side of the island near Puerto Plata and forms twenty-seven natural waterfalls known locally as charcos. Jumping down one waterfall is common in many countries. Doing it twenty-seven times in a row is something people associate with the Dominican Republic. This admission covers the first seven. The day begins at the main gates, where staff greet the group and go along on the climb. Guests climb to the seventh fall, then work back down through each level, jumping, swimming and sliding on natural limestone slides in clear water. Some pools lead into caves. Life jackets and helmets are provided, and a waterproof camera is the only kind to bring for photos or video. The price includes admission to seven falls, bottled water and an air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi on board. Water shoes and gratuities are not included. Guiding is available in German, English, French and Spanish, and up to 15 travelers can book together. A high level of fitness is needed, and the tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers or for people with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Good weather is required: if the tour is canceled for bad weather, a new date or a full refund is offered.
