Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, Mae Klong Railway Market and Erawan Falls Day Trip (12/12)

This 14-hour day trip spends its first half in Samut Sakhon and Damnoen Saduak, with a floating market, a railway market, a coconut sugar farm and a salt farm. At the floating market a motor boat ride is included, and the stalls sell sweet mango on sticky rice, freshly made coconut ice cream and Thai-style boat noodle. The Mae Klong Railway Market is reached by a ride on a local train. When the train signal sounds, vendors pull back their stalls and clear the track at speed, then set up again once it has passed. On the coconut sugar farm, a demonstration shows how coconut nectar is collected, boiled and pasteurized, and visitors try squeezing coconut milk with a traditional wooden machine. At the salt farm, sea salt dries into mounds, and the guide leads visitors to rub it between their hands and take photos. After lunch at a raft restaurant near the River Kwai Bridge, the day moves to Erawan Waterfall for a hike, a swim in the emerald-green ponds and a walk through the tropical rainforest. The day finishes with a walk along the Death Railway and the River Kwai Bridge, with photos at the riverbank at sunset. Travelers choose a standard air-conditioned vehicle or a luxury VIP van, which can carry a baby car seat if reserved. The price covers the boat and train rides, admission to Erawan, a private hotel transfer in downtown Bangkok, a private licensed English-speaking guide, travel accident insurance, and a local lunch with a drink. Up to 15 travelers can book.

  1. Samut Sakhon

Sea salt is made here by Thai local methods. The farmer moves sea water between levels, matched to the wind and sunlight, until the salt builds into mounds ready for cooking, skincare and agriculture. The stop is on Highway 35 in Samut Sakhon province, where the guide invites guests to rub the salt in their hands and take photos.

  2. Mae Klong Railway Market (Hoop Rom Market)

Nicknamed the life-risking market, this stop starts with a ride on a local train toward Mae Klong station. When the signal rings, vendors rush to pull back their stalls and clear away goods from the track, then set up again once the train has passed.

  3. Coconut Sugar Farm

Thai farmers show how coconut nectar and palm sugar loaves are made: cutting the coconut flower, pouring the nectar into a bamboo container, adding preserving wood, then boiling and pasteurizing it into a drink. Visitors try squeezing coconut milk from the shell with a traditional wooden machine.

  4. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The roundtrip transport from the hotel to the market takes 3 hours 30 minutes in total. Damnoen Saduak is one of the most attractive floating markets in Thailand, and the water-market atmosphere here is over 100 years old. A motor boat ride is included. Stalls sell sweet mango on sticky rice, fresh coconut ice cream and Thai-style boat noodle.

  5. Erawan Waterfalls

Erawan Waterfall is counted among the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand. Its seven separate tiers, with emerald-green ponds, run about 1,500 meters through the rainforest of the park, which is named after the three-headed white elephant of Hindu mythology. The top tier is said to resemble an elephant head. The admission fee for foreigners is included.

  6. River Khwae Bridge

Films and books made the Bridge over the River Kwai famous with Thais and foreigners alike. The black iron span has steel plates over the ties for easier walking, and viewing platforms between the trestles give a view of the river and a place to step aside when a train comes. Lunch is at a raft restaurant near the bridge.
