Start high and finish warm. This air-conditioned day tour climbs from Roseau to Freshwater Lake, drops to Ti Tou Gorge for a swim, walks to Trafalgar Falls and ends in the hot pools at Ti Kwen Glo Cho, with the Botanic Gardens also on the list. It crosses volcanic highlands and rainforest in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Freshwater Lake is Dominica's largest lake, over 2,500 feet up in the village of Laudat. At Ti Tou Gorge, the only way to the waterfall at the far end is to swim upriver, a swim of about five minutes, with life jackets provided and sunlight filtering down through the canopy. Trafalgar Falls is a short walk along a maintained path to a platform that frames both falls. The more adventurous can swim in the smaller one. At Ti Kwen Glo Cho the pools are naturally heated and sulphur-rich. Entrance fees, site passes, bottled water, life jackets and local rum punch are included. Lunch is not, but lunch stops can be made if requested. The tour suits all fitness levels, small children can ride in a pram or stroller and infants sit on an adult's lap. Up to 12 travelers can book, with guiding in English or French. The meeting point is Almanda, on Dr River Street in Roseau.

  1. Almanda, Dr River St, Roseau

  2. Nestled in the World Heritage Site is the Freshwater Lake

A 25-minute drive from Roseau, inside the World Heritage Site, leads to Freshwater Lake, the largest lake in Dominica, in the village of Laudat over 2,500 ft above sea level. It fills the center of an old volcano at the foot of Morne Macaque and feeds Ti Tou Gorge, Trafalgar Falls and the Roseau River. A trail rings the lake with views toward Grand Fond and Rosalie, through montane forest of short trees and open canopy. Expect cool air, chilly at night. The loop takes 45 minutes to 1 hour, is easy to moderate, and is optional.

  3. Titou Gorge

Ti Tou Gorge is a small waterfall at the end of a water-filled gorge in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The water can be cold, though hot water is close by. The waterfall can only be reached by swimming upriver through the gorge, about five minutes, with life jackets provided. Light falls through the canopy down the gorge walls.

  4. Trafalgar Falls

These twin waterfalls are a 20-minute drive from Roseau. A 10-minute walk on a well-kept path leads to a viewing platform for photographing both falls, among the best known sights in Dominica. The more adventurous can go on to swim in the smaller fall or find the hot springs by the tallest.

  5. Ti Kwen Glo Cho Hot Springs

Ti Kwen Glo Cho Hot Springs let visitors soak in naturally heated mineral water, a direct taste of the island's volcanic and geothermal activity. The warm pools sit in tropical greenery.

  6. Dominica Botanic Gardens

The Dominica Botanic Gardens, also called The Gardens or the Roseau Botanical Gardens, cover 40 acres in Roseau. They are a public park and part of the island's heritage, mixing history, plants and local wildlife.

  7. Almanda, Dr River St, Roseau
