Nordeste is often called the 10th island of the Azores because it feels so far away. It is the oldest geological formation on São Miguel, with rugged mountains, cliffs, forests, waterfalls and natural parks. This full-day tour reaches it along the north coast. The route starts at the Coroa da Mata viewpoint and moves on to the Limbo and Porto Formoso waterfalls, then Salto da Farinha and the Cascata do Risco in the green middle of the Nordeste municipality. Lunch is taken at a local restaurant serving typical Azorean dishes, with drinks, dessert, coffee, tea and local liquors included. The afternoon covers the Ribeira dos Caldeirões park, with its several waterfalls and restored 16th-century stone watermills. Then come the coastal viewpoints, among them Farol do Arnel, the oldest lighthouse in the Azores, and the gardens at Ponta do Sossego.
