One day, two halves: a Portland city tour and a Columbia River Gorge waterfalls tour, with a guide who talks about the city's history and its present-day culture along the way. The city half shows Portland at a relaxed, small-city scale. Stops include Pioneer Courthouse Square, NW 23rd (the city's best shopping area), the Pearl District, the South Park Blocks and Lan Su Chinese Garden. Some places are seasonal: the International Rose Garden, the World Forestry Museum and the Oregon Society of Artists. The Rose Garden has over 550 varieties of roses and views of the Cascade mountains. The Gorge half drives the Columbia River Highway, built between 1913 and 1922, to Vista House (1916 to 1918), Latourell Falls at 249 feet, and Multnomah Falls at 620 feet. Multnomah is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States and the highest in Oregon, and there is time to walk to Benson Bridge and look around the lodge. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is counted among the Seven Wonders of Oregon. The PSU Farmers Market stop belongs only to the morning Portland city tour.

  1. Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

The Columbia River Gorge was the nation's second National Scenic Area, and it is the largest and most populated. Its history includes tribal fishing and trade, the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1805 and 1806, and pioneers who sent their belongings down its rapids. The tour drives through it.

  2. Columbia River Highway

Built between 1913 and 1922, this 74-mile road ran from the Sandy River near Troutdale to The Dalles, a pioneering example of modern road design in 20th-century America. The tour drives along it.

  3. Vista House

A viewpoint over the Gorge, often called the Crown Jewel of the Columbia River Gorge. It was built between 1916 and 1918 as a memorial to Oregon pioneers, a scenic overlook and a comfort station for travellers on the new Historic Columbia River Highway.

  4. Latourell Falls

Latourell Falls drops 249 feet (76 m) over a wall of basalt and runs through the forest to the Columbia River. Columnar basalt frames it, with a patch of yellow lichen. The group walks down to the pool below the falls to hear the water and feel the mist.

  5. Multnomah Falls

A 620-foot (189 m) waterfall in two parts, the upper fall dropping 542 feet and the lower 69 feet, fed by underground streams from Larch Mountain. It is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States, the highest in Oregon, and draws over 2.5 million visitors a year. Historic Multnomah Falls Lodge at the base has a restaurant, gift shop, snack and espresso bar, and interpretive centre. There is time to walk to Benson Bridge and explore the lodge.

  6. Pioneer Courthouse Square

The urban park at the centre of Portland's events and community life. The van drives around it while the guide explains its history, so guests can return later to explore.

  7. International Rose Test Garden

The Rose Garden holds over 550 varieties of roses in Washington Park, with views of the Cascade mountains. There is time to walk through the garden.

  8. Washington Park

A city park with gardens, museums, a zoo and a forest. The van drives through part of it, so guests can come back to explore more.

  9. Pearl District

One of Portland's most sought-after neighbourhoods, with well-known chefs and restaurants, art galleries and boutiques. It was once a neglected corridor of warehouses and railways.

  10. PSU Farmers Market

A farmers market spanning almost three blocks of the Portland State University campus, with a Veggie Valet where shoppers can leave bulk purchases, musicians and a Chef in the Market series of cooking with seasonal ingredients. It is visited only on the morning Portland city tour, as the last stop, with time to walk around and have lunch.
