A custom 4x4 safari vehicle and a bilingual guide are the way into the backcountry on this half-day tour. Within minutes the road is in secondary rainforest, passing a small waterfall and a teak farm on the climb into the mountains of Agujitas and Carara National Park, just behind the Jaco and Los Suenos area. The ride tops out on a mountain of about 2,000 feet above sea level, with the Nicoya Peninsula lying over the Pacific Ocean in the distance. After a short photo stop the route goes under the canopy to Pura Vida waterfall, with many pools for swimming and several jumping points for thrill-seekers. Then it is on through the mountain pueblo of Bijagual to Paz del Campo Restaurant and Tilapia Farm, a secluded spot that is closed on Tuesdays. Guests can fish for tilapia in the surrounding pond or relax with a cold cerveza, which is not included. Don Gerardo and his staff serve an authentic Costa Rican meal, and the meal is included.
