The Columbia River Gorge runs for 80 miles between steep rock walls, and its western end is where the waterfalls are. This half-day tour keeps the walking short: brief hikes, overlooks and viewpoints, with the guides choosing the stops on the day. The list usually includes the best-known falls and a few quieter ones. Latourell Falls, a plunge-style fall over columnar basalt, is the benchmark. Depending on conditions, small hidden waterfalls and a second plunge-style fall with columnar basalt may be added. The tour runs in rain or shine. A van collects guests at one of the pickup spots and drives 15 to 30 minutes into the Gorge. Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon, comes with time for Benson Bridge and the gift shop. The long, steep trail to the top is not part of the tour. At Latourell there is the option of a longer walk of up to 2 miles (3 km). Wahkeena Falls is a 1/2 mile (1 km) hike, and Vista House closes the route when it is open. The guides talk about geology and botany, about pioneers and road-builders, and about older stories of gods, animal spirits and a Beaver princess who became a waterfall. Weather, traffic, road closures and highway construction can change the order or swap a fall, but the tour always reaches at least three waterfalls and a viewpoint.

What's included

  1. Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

A van collects guests at one of the pickup spots and drives 15 to 30 minutes into the Gorge. The whole tour stays in the waterfall-rich western end of this 80-mile (130-km) canyon.

  2. Multnomah Falls

Oregon's tallest waterfall and one of the most photographed in the country. Time here covers Benson Bridge and the gift shop. The long, steep trail to the top is left out.

  3. Bridal Veil

The route passes through Bridal Veil, a former lumber town that now has a tiny post office and a nunnery. There is at least one stop in the area.

  4. Wahkeena Falls

A hidden waterfall reached by a 1/2 mile (1 km) hike. It can be swapped for another fall when weather, traffic or road closures require it. Highway construction often reshuffles the itinerary, so the sample stops here are a guide, and at least three waterfalls and a viewpoint are always included.

  5. Latourell Falls

The best of the plunge-style falls, dropping over 15 million-year-old columnar and entablature basalt covered in lichen. Local legend says it carries the spirit of a Beaver princess. A longer hike of up to 2 miles (3 km) is possible here, through forest.

  6. Horsetail Falls- Columbia River Gorge

Visited if time and weather allow. Summer visitors can dip their toes in the water, and in winter the spray and noise are the draw. Bridal Veil Falls is one of the alternates. Highway construction often changes the itinerary, but at least three waterfalls and a viewpoint are always included.

  7. Vista House

The ornate rest stop above the river. Guests walk to the upper deck when weather allows and hear about the building's architecture. The Wasco people, who held this a holy place, are remembered here. If Vista House is unexpectedly closed, the tour stops for photos and the view when the schedule permits.

  8. Troutdale

The return drive takes about 35 minutes and leaves the mouth of the Gorge through the suburb of Troutdale before reaching the drop-off point.
