The van leaves Portland with a narrated introduction and passes through Troutdale. The first stop is Vista House at Crown Point, dating from 1918, whose marble and mahogany restroom doubles as a museum and way station for Gorge travellers.
-
Latourell Falls
A 249-foot fall that drops straight from an overhanging cliff, with both columnar and entablature basalt on view. A short trail from the parking area leads to the mist and to yellow lichen on the lava.
-
Shepperd's Dell State Natural Area
A hidden two-tiered waterfall of 92 feet in a ravine crossed by a historic bridge. Young's Creek runs through the lava here before reaching the Columbia River.
-
Wahkeena Falls
A 242-foot fall just off the historic highway, with a stone viewing platform and a short, steep walk to the lower falls. The guide decides, based on time and the group, how far to walk before moving on to Multnomah Falls. The Mazamas climbing club renamed it from Gordon Falls to Wahkeena, a Yakima word meaning most beautiful.
-
Multnomah Falls
Oregon's tallest waterfall, at 620 feet, and the second tallest year-round fall in the country. Guests can watch from the base platform or walk the short switchback trail to the 1914 Benson Bridge, 105 feet up. The historic lodge has a restaurant, gift shop, restrooms and an information centre.
-
Oneonta Gorge
A slot canyon known as the Gorge within the Gorge. Its walls are protected botanical land with plants that grow nowhere else. Lower Oneonta Falls, at 100 feet, can be reached only by wading up the creek. The 1914 tunnel can be seen from the road.
-
Horsetail Falls- Columbia River Gorge
A 176-foot waterfall close to the road, with a plunge pool and a trailhead for Ponytail Falls and Oneonta Gorge viewpoints. After it the van continues past Ainsworth State Park to Highway 84, with views of 848-foot Beacon Rock and of the Washington side of the Gorge on the return to Portland.
