A guided half-day trip from Portland along the Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway, built around the waterfalls that line the western Columbia River Gorge. Viewpoints on the route can include Portland Women's Forum, Crown Point Vista House, Latourell Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Multnomah Falls. A camera is worth bringing for the views. The Gorge view from Crown Point shows the Columbia cutting through the Cascade Mountains. Vista House, built in 1917, was meant as a place for travellers to rest. Latourell Falls is the closest major waterfall of the Gorge to Portland, with overhanging columnar basalt that lets Latourell Creek plunge 249 feet. Wahkeena Falls, 242 feet, is tiered and takes its name from a Yakama word for most beautiful, and it is visited as parking and timing allow. Horsetail Falls drops 176 feet beside the highway. Multnomah Falls is about 30 minutes from Portland and 611 feet tall. The visit includes a trip up to Benson Bridge and a stop at the gift shop, but not the hike to the top, which is long and steep. The route also passes through Bridal Veil, a former lumber town that now has a small post office and a nunnery.

  1. Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

At the western end of the Gorge, the view from Crown Point shows the Columbia unfolding through the Cascade Mountains. East of it, dozens of waterfalls fall from basalt cliffs along the Historic Columbia River Highway, among them Multnomah, Horsetail, Bridal Veil and Latourell.

  2. Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Viewpoint

A scenic viewpoint over the Columbia River Gorge and one of the best places to take in its width.

  3. Vista House

Built in 1917 on a scenic point of the Historic Columbia River Highway, as a place for travellers to rest and refresh on the way down the Gorge.

  4. Latourell Falls

The closest major waterfall of the Gorge to Portland. Overhanging columnar basalt lets Latourell Creek fall 249 feet without touching most of the cliff, which makes it one of the more unusual falls in the Gorge.

  5. Wahkeena Falls

A tiered fall of 242 feet, named from the Yakama word for most beautiful. It is shorter than nearby Multnomah. The stop depends on parking and timing.

  6. Bridal Veil

The route runs through a former lumber town that once led the Gorge's timber trade. It now has a small post office and a quiet nunnery.

  7. Horsetail Falls- Columbia River Gorge

Named for its shape, Horsetail Falls drops 176 feet in view of the highway's waterfall corridor.

  8. Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls is a roaring 611-foot cascade only a 30-minute drive from Portland. The visit includes the climb to Benson Bridge and the gift shop. The hike to the top is long and steep, so it is not part of the tour.
