Plitvice Lakes National Park is a UNESCO-listed stretch of lakes, meadows and caves, and this day trip reaches it from Split in an air-conditioned vehicle. The round-trip transfer from Split is part of the booking, so the long drive needs no planning. A guide leads the walk through the park and tells the stories behind what the group passes. The lakes are worth the trip because they are still being built. Calcium carbonate settles out of the water as tufa, also called travertine, and that deposit forms the natural dams that separate one lake from the next. The process has never stopped, so new barriers, curtains, stalactites, channels and cascades keep appearing while older ones change shape. Someone who has seen the park before will find it looking different. The park also has caves, and remains of prehistoric settlements were found in some of them. The day is a break from the busy coast around Split. A full refund is available when the booking is cancelled at least 24 hours before departure.

  2. Plitvice Lakes National Park

The lakes of Plitvice are a natural phenomenon because they never stop changing. Calcium carbonate settles out of the water and feeds special algae and moss, and the tufa, or travertine, it leaves behind is what built the natural dams between the lakes. The process is ongoing, so new barriers, curtains, stalactites, channels and cascades form while existing ones shift. A visitor who has been here before will see something different, and the park never gets boring. Beyond the lakes, caves hold remains of prehistoric settlements.
