This private route runs from Roseau up to Dominica's Freshwater Lake and back down through six stops, on a schedule the guide keeps loose. The pitch from Autop Tours is flexibility: no one is hurried, and time at a site can stretch if the group wants it. A licensed guide leads the day, and the plan allows for photo stops and a lunch stop. Lunch itself is not included. The first drive climbs to 2,789 feet before dropping to the lake, about 35 minutes from Roseau. Ten minutes on is Ti'tou Gorge, where a guide swims with you for around eight minutes through a narrow, steep-walled gorge to a hidden waterfall. Life vests are mandatory and provided. Scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest were filmed here, and the spot is pointed out. Trafalgar Falls comes next, via a ten-minute walk on a paved forest trail to a viewpoint over two falls, locally called male and female, at 125 and 75 feet. Then the Wotten Waven sulphur springs, with their steaming vents and eggy smell, and an optional bath at the Da-S'Cape sulphur spa. The way back goes through the Botanic Gardens, where the African baobab that fell on a school bus in Hurricane David in 1979 gets explained, and ends at Morne Bruce, with the old British garrison ruins, a cannon and a view over Roseau. Private transport, life vests, site passes and the guide are included. Pickup can be arranged from where you are staying. The tour is wheelchair accessible and suits all fitness levels. Guiding is in English, for up to 15 travelers.

  1. 7JW7+Q28, King George V St, Roseau

The meeting point is on Dame Eugenia Boulevard in Roseau, beside the bank (a green building). If you cannot find it, ask for Kewin (keh-win) or Autop Taxi (aww-top). Pickup from your accommodation or another chosen place is possible. The guide wears a white shirt with the company name.

  2. Freshwater Lake

About 35 minutes' drive from the Roseau start, with photo stops and facts about the island on the way up. The road climbs to 2,789 ft before dropping to the lake, which shows why Dominica is called the Nature Island of the Caribbean: green mountains and untouched forest. A place to relax and take photos, with a resource center on site.

  3. Titou Gorge

Ten minutes' drive from the lake. A guide swims with you for about 8 minutes through a narrow gorge with steep walls to a hidden waterfall inside. Scenes of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest were shot here, and the filming spot is pointed out. Life vests are mandatory and provided.

  4. Trafalgar Falls

Twenty minutes from Ti'tou Gorge. A 10-minute walk on a paved forest trail leads to a viewpoint over two falls side by side, known locally as male and female, at 125 ft and 75 ft.

  5. Wotten Waven Sulphur Springs

Ten minutes from Trafalgar Falls. Volcanic activity fills the area, and a smell of rotten eggs is part of it. There are photo chances at boiling sulphur springs and steaming vents, and a warm bath in the sulphur pools at the Da-S'Cape spa is possible.

  6. Dominica Botanic Gardens

A 20-minute drive back along the same route into the city, then five minutes through the Botanic Gardens by vehicle with notes on plants of interest. The best known is the African baobab that fell on a school bus during category 5 Hurricane David in 1979.

  7. Morne Bruce

Ten minutes' drive from the Gardens, above the city, is Morne Bruce: a bird's-eye view of Roseau and a good photo stop. The site is now a police academy, and the ruins of the British garrison and an old cannon can be seen.

  8. 7JW7+Q28, King George V St, Roseau
