Rio Celeste Four-Hour Hike to the Blue Waterfall from La Fortuna
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
La FortunaThe Rio Celeste hike fills a full day from La Fortuna and spends about four hours on foot inside Tenorio Volcano National Park. The effort is rated medium tough, and some guests find it a bit hard. The trail ends at a river that turns blue. The colour comes from a chemical reaction where two rivers carrying different volcanic minerals merge, a rare phenomenon, and the walk reaches the spot where that change of colour can be seen. Along the way the route passes a waterfall and a high lookout point that suits photographs. Lunch follows the hike, and there is free time for a quick dip in the river before the group heads back to La Fortuna. The meeting point is the Red Lava Office, in front of Relax Termalitas Hot Springs.

The hike lasts 4 hours, and some guests find it a bit tough. At the end waits Rio Celeste, the Blue River. Two rivers with different volcanic minerals merge here, and the chemical reaction between them colours the water blue, a rare effect.
