Two days, one night at the falls, and a bilingual driver-guide for a small group leaving Washington, D.C. The drive north runs through Harrisburg and Buffalo before Niagara Falls comes into view, and the day is spent looking at Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls from several viewpoints. The optional Classic Tour (150 minutes) adds Whirlpool Park, the Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist boat. After dark comes the 90-minute Night View Tour, when the falls are lit in colors. On the second day an optional stop at the Corning Museum of Glass (90 minutes) breaks up the ride back to D.C. The Maid of the Mist usually closes in winter and is not visited then. Pick-ups start at 6:30 AM at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C., with stops in Falls Church at 7:00 AM and at the Spring Hill Suites in Gaithersburg at 7:30 AM. 1. Washington DC

The group leaves Washington, D.C. in the morning and heads north into rolling countryside. Route: Washington D.C., Harrisburg, Buffalo, Niagara Falls (New York), Niagara Falls Classic Tour (150 min: Whirlpool Park, Cave of the Winds, Maid of the Mist), Niagara Falls Night View Tour (90 min).

  2. Harrisburg

Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania, lies on the Susquehanna River. The riverside and the domed state capitol mark roughly the halfway point of the drive north.

  3. Buffalo

Buffalo is the second-largest city in New York State and the gateway to the Niagara region. It sits on the eastern shore of Lake Erie and is the last big city before the falls.

  4. Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is one of the world's great transnational waterfalls, and its name comes from an Indigenous word meaning "thunder of waters." It spans the U.S.-Canada border: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and the slender Bridal Veil Falls each have their own character.

  5. Niagara Falls State Park

Niagara Falls Classic Tour (150 min; optional): Whirlpool Park looks down on a huge natural whirlpool, where the river turns sharply and the rapids fold back on themselves. At the Cave of the Winds an elevator drops into the gorge, then wooden walkways run just feet from Bridal Veil Falls, close enough to feel the spray. The Maid of the Mist boat ends the sequence, sailing into the misty basin below Horseshoe Falls. Note: the Maid of the Mist usually closes in winter and is not visited then.

    Extra fee

  6. Niagara Falls State Park

Niagara Falls Night View Tour (90 min): after dark the group walks deep into the park for "one park, two islands, three falls." Ram Island and Moon Island give close views from several angles while Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls glow in shifting colors. If a fireworks show is scheduled that evening, the group is there for it.

    Extra fee

  7. Corning Museum of Glass

The Corning Museum of Glass (90 min; optional): a stop on the way back at the world-famous museum, the heart of the American glass industry. About 100,000 pieces fill the galleries, from delicate artworks to clear crystal sculptures, and live glassmaking demonstrations show the craft up close.

    Extra fee

  8. Washington DC

A comfortable drive returns the group to Washington, D.C., with Niagara still fresh in mind.
