A day through Banff and Yoho National Parks built around lakes and a canyon walk, with pickup in Calgary, Canmore or Banff. The drive starts at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, both glacier-fed lakes with turquoise water and mountain backdrops, then continues to Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, a quiet place for a lakeside stroll or a photo stop. Johnston Canyon is the walking part of the day. Trails and catwalks lead to the Lower Falls and the Upper Falls, and the stop is listed as optional. In winter the falls freeze, and icy walks or guided ice climbing become possible. Lake Minnewanka is also optional and is covered in winter only; boat tickets and canoe rental are not included. The day ends in Banff town, where there is time to shop, eat or take in the views before the return to the original departure point. An optional stop at the Banff Gondola is available. Along the route the Natural Bridge shows where the Kicking Horse River has cut through solid rock. Moraine Lake is accessible only from June 1 to mid-October.

  1. Lake Louise

Lake Louise has something to do in every season. In summer: canoeing and hikes to the teahouses. In winter: ice skating, skiing and sleigh rides across the frozen lake. All year: the Fairmont Chateau, nearby Moraine Lake and local wildlife.

  2. Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake sits in the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Glacial rock flour gives the glacier-fed water its deep turquoise colour, and the mountains behind make it a favourite for photographs. Accessible from June 1 to mid-October.

  3. Natural Bridge

The Natural Bridge is a rock formation where the Kicking Horse River has cut through solid rock over centuries.

  4. Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake invites canoeing on its turquoise water, the easy 5.2 km Emerald Lake Loop, or harder trails such as the route to Emerald Basin. Sunrise and sunset are the best light for photographs. In winter it is a snowy place for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

  5. Johnston Canyon

Optional stop. An easy hike on a catwalk trail leads to the Lower Falls (1 km) and on to the Upper Falls (2.5 km one way). Hikers can continue to the Ink Pots, a group of coloured spring pools. In winter the frozen falls allow icy walks or guided ice climbing, and the canyon suits nature lovers, photographers and families.

  6. Banff

Banff has activities in every season. In summer: hiking, canoeing on glacier-fed lakes, the Banff Gondola, mountain biking and hot springs. In winter: ice skating, snowshoeing, skiing, dog sledding and sleigh rides. Wildlife viewing, museums and festivals are possible all year.

  7. Lake Minnewanka

Optional stop, covered in winter only. In summer Lake Minnewanka has boat cruises, canoe rental (tickets not included), nearby trails and wildlife viewing. In winter the frozen lake is used for ice skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and horse-drawn sleigh rides.
