This long day out from Montego Bay pairs a daytime climb up Dunn's River Falls with an evening boat trip on the Luminous Lagoon at Glistening Waters in Falmouth. The falls come first: the guide walks the group up the terraced rock beside rushing water, and the group spends about an hour and 45 minutes at the park, with pools on the way for photos and exit points if the climb gets to be too much. The drive passes the Rose Hall and Greenwood Great Houses, the town of Discovery Bay with its Columbus Park, Runaway Bay and the resort area of Ocho Rios, and the guide slows down for photos. In the evening the group boards a low-sided boat with an outboard engine for an hour on the lagoon, where bioluminescent organisms make the water glow blue and fish glow as they pass. Swimsuits and towels are worth bringing for a short swim. A welcome drink of rum punch or fruit punch and a short show of Jamaican dance come before boarding. Hotel pickup and drop-off, air-conditioned bus transport, local taxes and admissions are included. Lunch, drinks, gratuities, the DVD and souvenir photos are extra, and a jerk lunch stop at Scotchies is suggested. At least 4 people are needed for the tour to run, up to 15 can be booked together, and guiding is in English. It is not recommended for pregnant travelers or for anyone with back problems, spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

  1. Rose Hall Great House

An early 18th century plantation house on high ground at Rose Hall, Montego Bay, once owned by Annie Palmer, a notorious plantation owner who held hundreds of slaves. The house is said to be haunted since her violent death in 1831. The tour does not stop here on the way to Negril, but the guide tells the history and slows down for photos.

  2. Greenwood Great House

Greenwood Great House is another early 18th century plantation home built on high ground, a position that gave a view over the plantation and helped with security. Unlike Rose Hall it is calm and peaceful. The guide slows down as you pass, so you can photograph its architecture.

  3. Discovery Bay

Discovery Bay is home to Columbus Park. Christopher Columbus landed here in 1494 and named it Puerto Seco, or Dry Harbour, for the lack of fresh water. Water was found about 5 miles west and the place was named Rio Bueno, Good River. The town was renamed Discovery Bay in 1947. The park shows old relics and artifacts but is temporarily closed for renovation. Expect a brief photo stop.

  4. Runaway Bay

The route runs through Runaway Bay, one of the most scenic parts of Jamaica, between the coastline on one side and green mountains on the other. Its name is disputed: some say Spanish soldiers fled from here after the British attack in 1655, others that enslaved people used it as an escape route to Cuba. Have your camera ready.

  5. Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is the resort area of St Ann, a parish known for caves, gardens, rivers and white sand beaches. Its name was once thought to mean eight rivers, though it is said to come from Las Choreras, meaning waterfalls. Fern Gully, Dunn's River Falls, Blue Hole and the Secret Falls are all nearby. The town is small and colonial in style, with about 25 thousand people, roughly halfway between Kingston and Montego Bay. Golf, watersports and horseback riding are on offer, and Nine Miles, Reggae Xplosion and Seville Heritage Park tell the story of Bob Marley and Marcus Garvey.

  6. Dunn's River Falls and Park

At the world famous falls you meet your resident guide, get a briefing and sign a waiver, so wear your swimsuit. The guide walks you down to the beach where the climb starts. The climb from the beach to the top is about 600 feet (183 meters), with pools on the way for photos and exit points if you cannot finish. Time at the falls is about 1 hour 45 minutes. Ask the guide to point out the scenes from the James Bond film Dr. No.

  7. Scotchies Outdoor Garden Restaurant is undoubtedly the best…

Scotchies Outdoor Garden Restaurant is a recommended end to the day for jerk chicken and pork, served with festival. The food suits families and children, and steamed vegetables are available for non-meat eaters. The house hot sauce is made from local Scotch Bonnet pepper.

  8. Glistening Waters in Falmouth is home to the rare wonder

Glistening Waters in Falmouth is home to the Luminous Lagoon. A representative greets you on the terrace and takes you to the bar for rum punch or fruit punch, followed by a short show of Jamaican dance. At about 6:45pm you board the boat, which has low sides and an outboard engine, for a one hour ride. Watch for glowing fish passing by. Bring swimsuits and towels in case you want a short swim. The captain knows the history and welcomes questions.
