The day starts at a supermarket in Condado, San Juan (SuperMax, on Avenida Jose de Diego), where the driver and guide check the group in and then head to a roadside fruit stand. The group is capped at 12 travelers per booking, and the guide speaks Portuguese, English and Spanish. Late arrivals are given 15 minutes. At the fruit stand the driver buys the tropical fruit that the guide later serves on the trail, usually a selection of mango, pineapple, papaya and avocado. The stand also sells hot food from a quick-serve window (ribs, rotisserie chicken, rice and beans, fritters, smoothies), so bring spending money. Guests with their own car can join the group here and follow it to the parking area. The forest section is about four hours of hiking, in mud, water and over rock most of the time. The trek leads to waterfalls, natural pools and clear streams, with a rope swing, a natural waterslide and cliff jumps into deep pools. All of these are optional and take manual dexterity. Others use the pools to swim, relax or meditate. Driving and logistics add about 2.5 hours. Bottled water, general photography, an air-conditioned vehicle and the fruit are included. Tips are not. River shoes with grip, quick-dry clothes, a dry bag and a phone case with lanyard are recommended. Moderate fitness is required, and the tour is not recommended for spinal injuries, recent surgery, sprains or poor cardiovascular health.

What's included

  1. San Juan Metro Pick-up location at a supermarket

The driver and guide meet the group at a San Juan supermarket, check everyone in and set off for the fruit stand. Late arrivals get 15 minutes. Check-in and the drive to the fruit stand take about 45 minutes, and arriving early leaves time for breakfast, coffee, an ATM, river shoes and snacks.

  2. 2nd Meetup location on the way to the forest

A rustic fruit stand, food kiosk and gift shop for a 20-minute roadside stop. The fruit for the trail snack is bought and packed here, and guests with a car can meet the group. Hot dishes such as ribs, rotisserie chicken, rice and beans, yuca, stews, seafood, fritters and smoothies are served from a window. There is also a bathroom break. Bring some spending money.

  3. El Yunque National Forest

El Yunque has waterfalls, natural pools, flowers, large-leaf foliage, clear rivers, streams and small, harmless wildlife. The terrain is muddy, wet and rocky for most of the way. There is a rope swing to climb to, a natural waterslide, cliff jumps into deep pools and swimming, all optional. Some guests prefer to relax or bathe in the pools. A tropical fruit spread is a light snack. Driving and logistics take 2.5 hours and hiking 4 hours.
