This small-group trip to El Yunque starts with a pickup at your door in the San Juan, Carolina, Rio Grande or Luquillo area, in an air-conditioned vehicle. The guide's focus is local: the history of the forest and how its ecosystem works, explained along the trail rather than saved for the van. The walking is on the east side of the rainforest. A first hike of about 30 minutes, on a path that can be muddy, ends at a natural mineral-water pool where swimming is part of the stop. On the way up, the guide points out bamboo you can touch, guava trees and trees around 300 years old. Another 15 minutes uphill, over rockier ground, there is a second watering hole with natural waterfalls. Lifejackets certified by the USCG are provided. The trip takes about 4 hours. Groups are capped at 13 travelers per booking, and the guide speaks English and Spanish. Saturdays follow a different, steeper and muddier route that suits people in good shape. Travelers should have at least a moderate level of fitness, and the tour is not recommended for pregnancy, spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Children under 2 are not accepted.
