Full-Day El Yunque Hike from San Juan: Ceiba Pools, Rope Swing and Waterslides
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
San JuanA full day out: about 8 hours door to door, with 3.5 to 4 hours in the forest and roughly 1.5 hours of driving each way plus a lunch stop. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included within the tourist zone and selected San Juan areas, and the exact pickup time is sent the day before. The walking starts in Ceiba. A 25 to 30 minute hike, with a short stretch in the river, leads to the edge of the forest. From there the route climbs over rocks and between trees to natural pools and waterfalls where you can swing from a rope or jump from a cliff. Then comes the harder part: a steeper hike to higher pools that feed natural waterslides. The group returns by the same path, and swimming part of the way back is an option. A certified guide covers El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the US Forest System, along with facts about Puerto Rico's culture and history. Helmets, USCG-certified lifejackets and bottled water are provided, and wearing both lifejacket and helmet is mandatory. After the hike the group stops at a local restaurant for a late lunch. Food and drinks are not included, nor are gratuities. Children must be at least 7. Participants need to manage steep, rocky, muddy ground unaided, and the tour is closed to pregnant travelers and to people with heart, back or knee problems or recent surgery. Saturday departures use a different starting point, so the hike is longer and harder. Up to 15 travelers per booking, with guiding in English and Spanish.

El Yunque National Forest
The route follows the outskirts of El Yunque National Forest, with a look at local plants and animals and a swim under a waterfall. Participants must be able to walk rocky, muddy, uneven ground and to climb rocks. The water activities are a rope swing into the pools, cliff jumps and natural waterslides. Since hurricanes Irma and Maria, most of the best-known trails have stayed closed until further notice, so the route has been adapted to keep the day a full one.
