Guatapé, El Peñol Rock, El Retiro and Tequendamita Falls Private Tour (12/12)

This private day trip from Medellín strings together four stops on the east side of the city: the town of Guatapé, El Peñol Rock, the woodworking town of El Retiro and the Tequendamita waterfall. Transportation is private and the guides are bilingual. The operator avoids large groups and lets guests ask questions and adapt the route to their preferences. The road goes through the longest tunnel in South America, then out into farmland and mountains. A first break is at Alto del Chocho, a roadside restaurant known for its pan de queso. The group passes the town of El Peñol, rebuilt on higher ground after the old town was flooded in the 1970s, and visits El Peñol Rock, 700 feet high, with 740 stairs to the top and the same number back down. Guests who skip the climb can see the reservoir and mountains from the base. In Guatapé there is a 20 to 30 minute walk through colourful streets and a coffee on the Zócalo plaza. The Tequendamita waterfall needs no hiking. The last stop is El Retiro, where the walk ends at the main square for another coffee.

  1. El Poblado, Medellin

Guests whose hotel or Airbnb is outside the pickup zone can meet at Poblado Park, beside the police station where buses and taxis park.

  2. 1) After being picked up from your place in comfortable and…

Private pickup, then east out of Medellín through the longest tunnel in South America toward one of Antioquia's most scenic regions. The city gives way to farms among the Andes. First stop: Alto del Chocho, a typical roadside restaurant known for its pan de queso, with views around it.

  3. Penol

A pass through El Peñol town, rebuilt on higher ground after a big flood in the 1970s submerged the original town. Its people refused to give up, and it is known as the Phoenix of America.

  4. Piedra Del Penol

El Peñol Rock, 700 feet high and significant to local tribes. Climbing means 740 stairs up and 740 down, some steep and tight, so comfortable shoes matter. The base has views of the reservoir and mountains, souvenir shops and restaurants with drinks.

  5. Guatape

Guatapé, a colourful town of painted houses, balconies and parks, cobblestone streets and decorated zócalos. A 20 to 30 minute walk through its neighbourhoods, then coffee or a drink on the Zócalo plaza.

  6. 5) Our next stop

Tequendamita Falls, a waterfall surrounded by forest. No hiking is required.

  7. Parque Municipal El Retiro

El Retiro, known for its woodworking and furniture craft handed down through generations. A short walk through coloured streets with carved wooden doors, windows and balconies, then coffee on the main square. El Retiro is also called the cradle of liberty, as the first place in Colombia where a group of African slaves were emancipated and given access to productive gold mines.

  8. El Poblado, Medellin
