Halfway to Hana by Lincoln Navigator SUV: Waterfalls and Keanae, 6.5 Hours
Halfway to Hana condenses the Road to Hana into 6.5 hours, in place of the all-day full Hana tour. The vehicle is a Lincoln Navigator SUV with five first class seats and two coach size seats, driven by a guide who has been on this road for 20 years (Summer) or 35 years (Sean). Everything worth doing on the road is mentioned and offered, and a guide who lives locally can also give an update on Hawaiian affairs if asked. The turnaround point is Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside Park. Other stops include the Keanae Arboretum, Wailua Valley State Wayside Park, Keanae Point and Honomanu. Booking all seven seats makes the tour private; booking fewer makes it shared. Couples may travel in two SUVs that follow each other, and the operator counts 8 stops. Check-in is at 9am and the goal is to leave before 9:30am, unless a ship arrives later. Bring reef walkers if a dip in a waterfall is on the list, a rain jacket, and a remedy for motion sickness. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

70 E Kaahumanu Ave C1, Kahului
Check in at 9am; the goal is to leave before 9:30am, unless the ship docks later. A greeter stands at the Maui Village Mall sign on the corner, in front of Baskin-Robbins. Text the booking's last name if needed and an agent replies by text.
-
Pua'a Ka'a State Park
A state wayside park on the Hana Highway, about 39 miles east of Kahului: 5 acres of rainforest with waterfalls and pools, at 1,200 ft and roughly half a mile from Waiohue Bay. This is the turnaround point of the tour. A waterfall deep in the forest invites a swim, so bring a change of clothes and reef walker shoes. Paths lead to the falls, and there are bathrooms and seating. If there is room, a lunch bought beforehand can be eaten here. Heavy rain upstream can send a surge of muddy water at any time, so the guide helps pick one of two spots for a dip.
-
Ke'anae Arboretum
A walk on a small trail into subtropical rainforest, with plenty of photo chances. It rains often, so shoes that can get muddy are advised.
-
This quaint little town you can see the turn of the century…
A small town with turn of the century buildings from the plantation days. Anyone who stops here is advised to give it two hours on another day. World renowned surfing waves break just beyond it.
-
Haipua'ena Falls
The owner of the property allows viewing only from the bridge. It is a fine example of a waterfall on private land, unlike others on this road that have public access.
-
Kaumahina State Wayside Park
A parking spot with a bathroom break and a view over the valley below. A favorite for photographs and for the long stretch of ocean coastline.
-
Wailua Valley State Wayside Park
A small staircase leads to a view of the whole valley below and the valley behind. The scale of it recalls Jurassic Park. A short parking area is provided by the state.
-
Upper Waikani Falls
Depending on the previous day's weather, this waterfall flows with fresh water from the upper valleys as the tour passes by.
-
Ke‘anae Point
Said to be where the first Hawaiians found water on Maui. Taro fields and an 1800s church line the drive to the point, where waves crash into black lava flows. Good shoes are advisable on the sharp rocks, and a restroom is a short stroll away.
-
Honomanu
A small, secluded black-pebble beach with surf and views of the green hills around it. It lies off the road and needs an SUV, which the Navigator is.
-
Halfway to Hana
A possible lunch stop, named after the cafe. Cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pork and other sandwiches, smoothies and banana bread are on the menu. The route goes on about 30 minutes beyond this location.
-
In Keanae
The first town on Maui with water for the Hawaiians who arrived there. The beach is a favorite of locals.
-
Ke‘anae Point
Huge waves, black lava and wide ocean views. A bathroom stop. Vendors sometimes sell macadamia nut brittle, and fresh coconut water can be opened with slices on request.
-
Ching's Pond
A swimming spot used by locals in Keanae.
