Italian-Guided South Coast Day Tour to Vík with Kvernufoss and Dyrhólaey Arch (7/7)

For travelers who want waterfalls, volcanoes, black sand and basalt columns without long hikes, this guided day trip takes the South Coast road to Vík, the main town of the southern region. The guide speaks Italian, and the booking is limited to 8 travelers. Private transportation is included, in an air-conditioned vehicle, with parking fees, fuel surcharge and GST covered. The day begins at Seljalandsfoss, on the slopes of Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that disrupted flights across half of Europe in 2010. Depending on the season, the path behind the falls may or may not be open. A five-minute walk away, a small canyon leads under the Gljúfrabúi waterfall, if the creek, season and weather allow it. At Skógafoss, a staircase of about 400 steps climbs the 62-meter fall to a view across the plains to the sea. Kvernufoss comes after a few minutes' drive and a short, easy walk in a small canyon, at a spot that is still less visited than its neighbors. The last scheduled stop is Reynisfjara, with its basalt columns and a view of the rock arch at Dyrhólaey. Waves on this beach can be dangerous, and the guide keeps the visit safe. Weather and season permitting, Sólheimajökull glacier is an extra stop on the way back, before drop-off at your accommodation. Lunch, dinner, snacks, bottled water and gratuities are not included.

  1. Skúlagata 8, Reykjavík

The group meets in the parking lot in front of the bus stop at Skúlagata 8.

  2. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

The first stop is Seljalandsfoss, on the slopes of Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano whose 2010 eruption grounded flights across half of Europe. Depending on the season, walking behind the falls may or may not be possible. The time allotted includes the transfer.

  3. Gljufrabui Waterfalls

A five-minute walk from Seljalandsfoss leads into a small canyon beneath the Gljúfrabúi waterfall. Getting in means walking up a small creek, which depends on the season and the weather.

  4. Skogafoss

The second stop is Skógafoss, which also appeared in the TV series Game of Thrones and Vikings. About 400 steps lead to the top of the 62-meter fall, with a view over the plains all the way to the sea. The time allotted includes the transfer.

  5. Kvernufoss

A few minutes' drive on, Kvernufoss is reached by a short, easy walk through a small canyon. It is still less visited than most falls here, so with luck few other people will be around. The time allotted includes the transfer.

  6. Reynisfjara Beach

The last scheduled stop before heading back is the black beach at Reynisfjara, lined with basalt columns. From here the Dyrhólaey promontory and its rock arch are in view over the ocean, and the arch looks best at dusk. Unusually strong waves sometimes hit this beach, so caution matters, and the guide keeps the visit safe. The time allotted includes the transfer.

  7. Solheimajokull Glacier

As an extra stop, depending on season and weather, the group goes to the Sólheimajökull glacier lagoon on the way back to Reykjavík. The time allotted includes the transfer.

  8. Reykjavik

The drive returns to the meeting point, with drop-off at your accommodation.
