  1. Siem Reap

Hotel pickup runs between 7:30 and 8:00 am, with guests waiting in the lobby by 7:30 sharp. The day is packed.

  2. Palm Sugar Village

Rice paddies and wooden stilt houses line the road as the villages start their day. The Palm Sugar Village is the first stop, where families keep making sugar as earlier generations did, and the whole process can be watched, from palm tree to golden crystals.

  3. Poeng Ta Kho (amazing Cliff)

The summit of Kulen Mountain is the birthplace of the Angkor Empire. Poeng Ta Kho, a short walk from the parking area, looks over canyons and forests. The reclining Buddha carved in the rock and the River of a Thousand Lingas follow.

    Extra fee

  4. Preah Ang Thom pagoda

The 8-meter reclining Buddha is carved into the mountainside, and pilgrims have climbed to it for 1,000 years. Families light incense, monks pray, and the stone face appears to change with the light.

    Extra fee

  5. 1000 Lingas

Priests of the 11th century cut thousands of fertility symbols into the riverbed, so the water flowing over them became holy water for the Angkor kingdom.

    Extra fee

  6. Phnom Kulen Waterfall

Clear pools at the falls are fed by limestone-filtered mountain water. The picnic is laid out on smooth rocks beside the falls, and the water is cold and clear enough to see every pebble.

    Extra fee

  7. Prasat Beng Mealea

Beng Mealea, built in the 12th century, is covered in jungle vines and big tree roots. It resembles what Angkor Wat might look like if nature had reclaimed it.

    Extra fee

  8. Kampong Phluk floating village

A floating village where families live on the water among tall stilt houses and dense mangrove forest. The visit includes a Buddhist monastery built on an artificial island.

    Extra fee

  9. Siem Reap

The group is back in Siem Reap by 6:30 pm, with a drop at the hotel or at the Old Market for shopping and dinner.
