A ten-hour day that links three corners of Siem Reap province: the sacred Kulen Mountain, the jungle temple of Beng Mealea and the stilt-house village of Kompong Phluk on Tonlé Sap Lake. Hotel pickup in Siem Reap is between 7:30 and 8:00 am, and the van is back in town by 6:30 pm, with a drop at the hotel or at the Old Market. The morning starts in a palm sugar village where families make sugar the traditional way. On Kulen Mountain the stops are the Poeng Ta Kho cliff viewpoint, the 8-meter reclining Buddha at Preah Ang Thom pagoda, the River of a Thousand Lingas with its carvings in the riverbed, and the Phnom Kulen waterfall, where the pools are open for a swim. A picnic lunch of local dishes is served near the waterfall. After lunch the group visits Beng Mealea, a 12th-century temple wrapped in jungle vines and tree roots, and then goes by boat to Kompong Phluk, a floating village with a Buddhist monastery built on an artificial island. Admission tickets, an English-speaking guide, hotel transfers, seasonal fruit, palm cake tasting, water and towels are included. A vegetarian lunch can be requested in advance (no vegan option). Soft drinks cost extra. Knees and shoulders must be covered, and the small group is limited to 14 people.

Itinerary

  1. Siem Reap

Hotel pickup runs from 7:30 to 8:00 am. Guests should be waiting in the lobby by 7:30. The day is long and busy.

  2. Srah Srang

The road east passes rice paddies and wooden stilt houses while locals start their morning. The first stop is the Palm Sugar Village, where families make sugar the traditional way, and the process is shown from palm tree to golden crystals.

  3. Poeng Ta Kho (amazing Cliff)

Poeng Ta Kho is a viewpoint over canyons and forests, a short walk from the parking area. Kulen Mountain is the birthplace of the Angkor Empire, and the summit visit also includes the reclining Buddha carved into the rock and the River of a Thousand Lingas.

  4. Preah Ang Thom pagoda

An 8-meter reclining Buddha is carved into the mountainside. Local families light incense and monks pray here, and the stone face seems to change expression with the light. Pilgrims have made this same climb for 1,000 years.

  5. 1000 Lingas

Thousands of fertility symbols were carved into the riverbed by 11th-century priests, which made the flowing water holy for the whole Angkor kingdom.

  6. Phnom Kulen Waterfall

The natural pools are fed by limestone-filtered mountain water, clear enough to see every pebble. There is time for a swim, then a picnic lunch of local dishes beside the sacred river.

  7. Prasat Beng Mealea

Beng Mealea, built in the 12th century, is covered in jungle vines and large tree roots. It looks like Angkor Wat might if nature had been left to take it back.

  8. Kompong Phluk

Kompong Phluk is a floating village on the Tonlé Sap where families live on the water among tall stilt houses and mangrove forest. The visit includes a Buddhist monastery built on an artificial island.

  9. Siem Reap

The group is back in Siem Reap by 6:30 pm. Guests choose between a drop at the hotel or at the Old Market for evening shopping and dinner.

Not included

  • Soft drinks

Good to know

  • Suitable for all physical fitness levels
  • The end of March to the end of July is a crucial time in all the floating villages in Siem Reap, as the water levels start to recede and present a unique opportunity for tourists to experience a new perspective. Although the picturesque landscape of the floating community may lose some of its charm during this time, visitors have a chance to immerse themselves in the daily life of the villagers living in the dried season. While some boats may become stuck, and smaller canoes are unable to traverse the jungle forest, these challenges add to the thrill of the experience. The dry season in floating village of Kompong Phluk may not be the ideal time to visit for those seeking postcard-perfect photos, but it offers a chance to witness a facet of the village’s daily life that is not typically seen. As they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. We recommend visitors to embrace this rare chance to witness a different facet of this incredible destination and truly get a different taste of life in the village.
