La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike from Curubande, Private Tour, 3 Hours

La Leona sits in the small town of Curubandé, 20 minutes from Liberia on the slopes of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. The waterfall drops between two canyons, and its water comes from the Río Blanco, which rises on the volcano. Sulfur in the water gives it a shade somewhere between blue and turquoise. The route is 2 km each way and takes about 3 hours from start to finish. It follows the river through forest, around large rock formations and across streams, then up small ladders. The last stretch is wet: hikers pull themselves along a rope through the water into a big cave, and the waterfall comes into view inside it. The operator rates the difficulty as moderate and says plainly that this is an adventure tour, not an easy walk. It is not suited to guests with knee, ankle or mobility problems, spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, and it is not recommended for pregnant travelers. Guides speak English and Spanish. The booking covers guides, life jackets for those who want them, a waterproof bag for small belongings, lockers, changing rooms and bathrooms. Food and drinks are not provided, and gratuities are extra. Guests should arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to get ready.
