Early in the morning a guide collects guests at their hotel and the day starts at Materuni, a village below Mount Kilimanjaro. Tropical rainforest closes in around it and opens onto views across the town. After the hike, the pool at the foot of the waterfall is there for a swim, if the weather allows. The village is also the place to see how the Chagga people live. Banana beer is part of the visit, and so is coffee roasted the traditional way. Guests can take part in making it from start to finish. After a cup of coffee comes lunch with fresh fruit in Materuni. The second half of the day is at Kikuletwa, also called Chemka Hot Springs, a pool of warm water where small fish nibble at the feet of swimmers as a leg massage. The group has a few hours to rest, talk and swim, with a beer or a soft drink in hand. Then the guide drives back to the hotel or the airport.

  1. Materuni Waterfalls

Materuni Waterfall is one of the day-trip waterfalls of the Kilimanjaro Region in northeast Tanzania. It lies in Materuni village, at the edge of the Kilimanjaro mountain reserve, with views over rainforest, coffee, banana and avocado plantations.

  2. Materuni Waterfalls

A coffee talk of about one hour explains how coffee is grown, from the first plant to the drink, with the village's own teaching equipment. Guests can join the making, with local dances and songs, and finish with cups of fresh coffee. A lunch buffet with fresh fruit is prepared meanwhile.

  3. Kikuletwa Hotsprings

Kikuletwa, also called Chemka Hot Springs, lies near the village of Rundugai, among palm and fig trees with winding roots. Blue monkeys are often seen in the trees in the morning, and the clear water invites a swim. A small bar sells beer and soda. The group returns to the city in the late afternoon.
