Materuni Waterfall and Kikuletwa Hot Springs Tours

20 tours that add Kikuletwa to Materuni: typically 60 to 120 EUR for 9 hours, five operators at one identical price, and a drive of about an hour and twenty minutes to the water.

The 20 Materuni tours that add the Kikuletwa hot springs typically cost 60 to 120 EUR for 9 hours, and the price does not follow the hours. Five listings from five different operators are priced at one identical price and run 8, 9, 11 and 12 hours. What you are really buying is a Materuni morning, the same one sold on the coffee-farm page, plus a long drive to warm water in the afternoon. This page reads the 20 listings one by one: what each day includes, who runs it, where the money goes, and how to tell a fair price from a vague one. The place itself, the walk and the fees are on the Materuni page.

Every figure here comes from the 20 listings we read on 22 October 2026, and hours are medians. Safari Soles Tours holds 56% of the reviews through one 12-hour listing in the 60 to 120 EUR band with 890 reviews, so the 4.98 rating is largely the rating of that one day. The other 19 operators average about 37 reviews each, and 13 have fewer than 30.

Materuni waterfall and Kikuletwa hot springs: the two halves of the day

Kikuletwa goes by three names in the listings: Kikuletwa, Chemka and Maji Moto, which is Swahili for hot water. A travel directory puts the springs about 40 km from Moshi and about 70 km from Arusha. They lie south-west of Moshi on the map, far from the Materuni slopes, which is why this day is long and why it is not sold as a half day. Listings describe clear water among palm trees, a rope swing and a small bar, and one travel report puts the water at around 27 °C. The village morning is the same as in the other format: a walk of about 40 minutes to the fall, coffee, lunch.

The drive

Kilimanjaro on the road

Some listings mention views of Kilimanjaro from the road, cloud permitting. The photo shows the kind of view they mean: snow on the summit above rocky slopes, with cloud. On a day of 8 to 12 hours the drive is a real part of what you buy.

The road is the weak point. One listing says the ride to the springs is partly bumpy, and one report mentions a dirt road near the springs. Pick an operator that names the vehicle, not just the price.

What the price buys: why one price is the going rate

The chart opposite plots each of the 20 listings by length and price. Look at the columns: at 8 hours prices run from under 30 to more than 120 EUR, at 9 hours roughly 60 to 250 EUR, at 12 hours roughly 60 to 250 EUR. Length explains almost none of it. Eighteen of the 20 are private, and all 18 are priced per person, not per group; five of them sit on one identical price.

Chart of the prices of the 20 Materuni Waterfall & Kikuletwa Hot Springs listings on waterfalls.travel, median 108.8 EUR

The chart: 20 listings by length and price

Blue circles are the two shared listings, orange diamonds the 18 private ones, and the dashed line is the median, in the 60 to 120 EUR band. Two listings run 6 hours, both in the 120 to 250 EUR band. Add 40 minutes of walking, the coffee, lunch and a drive of about an hour and twenty minutes one way and there is little time left in the water, so ask the operator what a 6-hour day contains. The dot under 30 EUR at 8 hours is the optional-springs listing, and the lone blue dot at 4 hours is the listing whose inclusions look copied from a climb.

What the listings include and what to ask

Most listings include transport, lunch and drinking water, and name a guide. Entry to Materuni is stated as included in several. The springs are less clear. One listing in the neighboring Marangu group names the Kikuletwa entry as included, and the listing under 30 EUR says plainly that the hot springs visit is optional and not part of the price. For independent visitors the reported fee differs between a directory and a traveler's note, which quote different amounts in different currencies, and we could not reconcile them. So ask three things: is the springs entry in the price, how long is the drive, and what is the vehicle. One 4-hour listing names breakfast, park fees, camping fees and rescue fees among its inclusions, which belong to a mountain climb and not to a day trip. We would ask that operator for the real itinerary before paying.

Is Kikuletwa worth adding to Materuni?

It depends on what you want from the afternoon. If the point is the waterfall, no: the extra money and the extra hours buy a pool, not another fall. If you have a free day before or after a climb or a safari, and you want to swim in warm water and do nothing, yes. Listings describe exactly that: dozing in the sun, chatting at a small bar, swimming. Bring swimwear and a towel, which listings ask for. Aim for the identical-price cluster, and ask why you are paying more. The cheapest credible one is a 9-hour listing in the 60 to 120 EUR band.

Who runs the Materuni and Kikuletwa days

Twenty listings come from 20 operators, so the market is fragmented, with one exception. Safari Soles Tours has 890 reviews, in the 60 to 120 EUR band, for 12 hours, a rating of 5.0 and a clear itinerary: waterfall, coffee, hot springs, back in the late afternoon. Next come Suricata Safaris with 229 reviews in the same band for 8 hours and Travel Africa Safari Agency with 64 in the same band for 12. Thirteen of the 20 operators have fewer than 30 reviews, so the 4.98 average rests on a few sources; read recent comments before choosing a cheaper one.

Mistakes people make with this tour

The first is booking by price alone. A listing under 30 EUR and one in the 120 to 250 EUR band do not describe the same day. The second is expecting a short day: the 4-hour listing and the two 6-hour ones leave little time at the springs, since the drive alone takes about an hour and twenty minutes one way. The third is arriving without swimwear after being told the hot springs are "optional". The fourth is assuming Kikuletwa is near Materuni because the two share a tour. Listings put the drive from the village at about an hour and twenty minutes.

Questions about the Materuni and Kikuletwa tour

Is Kikuletwa worth adding to Materuni?

If you have a free day and want warm water, yes. If you want a second waterfall, no. The extra cost is a little more money at the median and about three and a half hours, mostly driving. The Materuni morning is the same in both formats.

How long is the Materuni and Kikuletwa day?

The median is 9 hours, from 4 to 12 across the 20 listings. The drive from the village to the springs takes about an hour and twenty minutes, so a day under 8 hours leaves little time in the water. Ask the operator for the hour you will be back.

How far are the hot springs from Materuni?

The springs are about 40 km from Moshi and 70 km from Arusha by road according to a travel directory, and a listing puts the drive from the village at about an hour and twenty minutes, partly over bumpy tracks.

What should I bring to Kikuletwa?

Swimwear and a towel, as the listings say, plus shoes with grip for the Materuni trail. Ask the operator what is included at the springs.

Why is one listing under 30 EUR?

Its title says optional hot springs, its description describes the springs as part of the day, and its exclusions list the springs visit as not included. Ask what the price covers, and compare it with the coffee-farm day, not with the median for the page.

Not sure about the long day?

The coffee-farm page reads 20 shorter Materuni tours, typically 60 to 120 EUR for 5.5 hours, without the drive.
