Materuni Waterfall Hike, Chagga Coffee Tour and Kikuletwa Hot Springs Swing Day (11/11)

Three stops fill this day: a forest walk to a tall waterfall, a coffee lesson in a Chagga village, and an afternoon at the Kikuletwa hot springs. Materuni sits 15 km from Moshi Town and is the last village before Kilimanjaro National Park. The trail to the falls takes about 40 minutes on foot, and when the sky is clear the summit of Kilimanjaro shows on the way. The falls drop more than 80 meters into a pool where swimming is possible. Back in the village, the Chagga, described as some of Tanzania's finest brewers, serve their local banana beer, and the coffee session follows. Guests see coffee picked, dried, roasted and ground, then drink their own organic cup. The road to Kikuletwa takes about an hour and 20 minutes and is partly bumpy. The clear water has a rope swing, and a small bar stands beside it. The group leaves in the late afternoon, just before sunset, and returns to a hotel in Arusha or Moshi. The waterfall path turns slippery, so hiking shoes matter. Pack swimwear and a towel for both swims.

  1. Materuni Waterfalls

Materuni is a Chagga village, 15 km from Moshi Town and the last one before Kilimanjaro National Park. The walk to the falls takes around 40 minutes on a slippery, muddy trail, so hiking boots help. The cascade is over 80 meters high, with a pool below for swimming. Back in the village comes a traditional Chagga lunch and a taste of banana beer.

  2. Materuni Waterfalls

The coffee session shows how beans are grown, dried, roasted and processed. Visitors help grind them, traditionally to Chagga songs and dances, then drink the result with rainforest views around.

  3. Kikuletwa Hotsprings

From Materuni the drive to Kikuletwa takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, partly on bumpy slopes. The afternoon is open: doze in the sun, chat with locals at the small bar, or swim. The group leaves just before sunset and returns to a hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Bring swimwear and towels.
